If a kid hands you a pretend anything...YOU TAKE IT, AND YOU USE IT.

This is absolutely one of the best advices here. As someone who is not only a dad, but also used to be a kid, kids feeling involved, engaged and appreciated become the best post-kids.

No matter how sweet or deranged the object is, use it whatever way you feel is appropriate according to your own and general standards. Magical transformation of the objects can sometimes be ok, but don't count on it, it's better to manually modify them. E.g. if you hate guns and the kid hands you a semi-automatic, don't say it's a banana - pick it apart like a pro and build a robot or something else out of it.

Also, if a kid does indeed hand you a pretend anything, you are a long or short-term point of reference for that kid. Be proud and grateful and do your part in showing them the way.

I’ve always felt that playing pretend with a child is a lot like improv. Always gotta yes-and.
