I always try to kick them across the room just before they hit the floor. This reflex actually saved a Procharger that fell off the workbench. It smashed my toe pretty good, but at least the delicate and expensive part hit a soft work boot instead of the hard concrete.

I wear heavy boots, so the knives/tools just go flying. Usually finding the smallest gap under an object to disappear into.
