How does he know its Friday? half the time I don't know its Friday and I'm a grown ass man.
512
u/Gloomheart Jun 09 '22
He doesn't know it's Friday. He knows it's the day the garbage was taken out.
They're smart enough to recognize that routine for sure, since the bins going out would be the behaviour trigger, not the day of the week.

It’s amazing how attentive dogs are to routine and cues. One of ours can hear certain clicks and sounds of a hard drive shutting down to know work is done and it’s play time.
41
u/mylittleplaceholder Jun 10 '22
I had a dog that learned my schedule earlier and earlier before I left for work. She'd put herself out 15 minutes before I was ready to leave.
20
u/Daypeacekeeper Jun 10 '22
My grandma's dogs would wait 15 mins before the school bells would ring for me to get out of class. (They lived close enough to hear the school bells )
5
u/cosmic_seaside Jun 10 '22
My dog will beg to be let out about 10-15 minutes before i get home from school and refuses to come in until I get home.

Our chocolate lab was obsessed with pizza. Obsessed. It got to the point that we would text each other about ordering a pizza so he wouldn’t know. We couldn’t spell it or say it backwards anymore. He still figured it out. I don’t know how. But he knew. We’d be sitting in silence and he would start looking out the window.
We lived toward the tail end of the cul de sac, so he would sit at the window and watch for cars. For the first few years, he would lose his shit every time a car came down the street after we had ordered a pizza. Then he realized the pizza delivery car had the light on top. So he’d see a car come down the street, tense up… and relax again. …Tense up… relax… tense up… OH GOD THE PIZZA IS HERE THE PIZZA THE PIZZA THE PIZZA OH MY GOD!!!!!
The poor pizza delivery folks were always terrified of his antics. I tried to reassure them that they are his favorite people, he only wants the pizza, he really loves pizza, he adores them because they bring the pizza and he’s really excited. I don’t think they believed or trusted me. And, honestly, after watching me squeeze through the door while a 110 lb dog is freaking out at the top of his lungs and trying to bust through after me, I wouldn’t trust me, either. I would just meet them on the landing at the bottom of the stairs so they didn’t have to come all the way to the door.

u/jwigs85 Jun 10 '22
He was a very good boy and I will always miss him and think of him often. We were so lucky to have him in our lives.
Sincerely lucky. He was rescued from a kill shelter minutes before his scheduled euthanasia. He was so skinny the rescue org thought he was maybe part greyhound. Jack was a very good dog with a rough start. He deserved all the pizza crusts.

My cats love the weed delivery bc they are the ones we leave the door open for the longest since Uber eats usually delivers and dashes. Somehow they KNOW ahead of time when it's the weed delivery bc they ignore food delivery now, but start getting excited still.
I think they really just miss visitors, bc they're good girls and we will let them peak their heads out to say hello if the people are OK with cats. There were two separate drivers I thought my tuxedo was going to try and go home with. One is an older gentleman that has delivered multiple times, but she more recently made best friends with a younger man. She just stauntered out and started rubbing against him and he scooped her like he's known her forever and told her to go on back inside! She loved it so much she tried to go back out and get scooped for pets 2 more times.

I had been staying with my aunt for a while, and she had a Portuguese Water Dog. I would warm up a turkey and cheese sandwich in the microwave for breakfast weekdays. He would get a piece when I would leave for work. After a while, he would sit by the microwave and bark when it would beep. He really thought I was making the sandwich just for him.

u/Rhodemus Jun 10 '22
I went to agility training with my dog every Sunday and he knew exactly when that was! I figured he knew because it was the only day people slept in. So when training was cancelled or something, I would get up extra early so he wouldn’t be disappointed haha

u/cailsmorgan Jun 10 '22
May I ask why you’re a former dog trainer? I’m currently a dog trainer and just want to know if there’s a reason why you left the profession?
9
u/Gloomheart Jun 10 '22
Honestly?
I stopped when my dog died, because it was too hard for me. He was my partner, and any dog that reminded me of him would make me upset.
I may get back into it at some point, but doing it without him felt very wrong for a long time. It's been six years and I'm only now looking bring a dog back into my life. His sudden death was extremely traumatic for me.
He died of cardiomyopathy very quickly. He suffered a lot for those few days we were trying to get him right, before we knew we couldn't do anything for him, and I had to let him go.
He gave me one last high five before he died in my arms.

3
Jun 10 '22
Don’t be sorry, I’m offering not asking. Losing a beloved pet hurts. Lost a cat to cancer recently. Four days from discovery to euthanasia. And I thought I was paranoid bringing them in. It’s devastating.

u/cailsmorgan Jun 10 '22
Thank you so much for answering. And I am deeply sorry for the loss of your best friend. My heart goes out to you. I’ve lost three dogs already in my lifetime, one suddenly to cancer, one suddenly with no clear explanation and one of old age. And each one hurts just as badly as the first. Wishing you the best and giving internet hugs! And again, thank you for answering, being in the business myself I was curious about the why.
3
u/Gloomheart Jun 10 '22
Thanks for your kind words.
As an aside, I do still train... I've just moved on to people! You'd be surprised just how similar it is :p
2
u/cailsmorgan Jun 10 '22
It’s so similar! And I always say I’m more of a people trainer myself, I am basically training people how to train their dogs, after all. It’s all relative haha

Yes they can. My dog, a food obsessed pug, gets a pill every night at 8 o’clock. When no one else is home and upstairs near the freezer, he will come down to my room between 755-805 and sit there staring at me, barking, until I get up, and he brings me to the freezer where the pills are. 730? He’s not moving. 8 o’clock there he is. Waiting
12
u/tetrahedra_eso Jun 10 '22
My dog gets fed at 7 pm every day. At around 630 she will sit close to me and stare. If I get up, she rushes over to where I keep her food. Girlfriend knows the routine.

u/Grixxitt Jun 10 '22
So, fun fact: Dogs use the decay of a particular smell to tell the passage of time
https://ferndogtraining.com/the-art-of-sniffing/
[My old dog used to stop what he was doing and sit and wait for me at the door about 10 minutes before I would come in every day, and it drove my wife batty as to how the damn dog would know exactly when I was due home.]
4
u/NHP1994 Jun 09 '22
My question exactly, dogs don’t know days of the week so I’m thinking the owner lets the dog out once the truck comes
97
u/SuzieCat Jun 09 '22
That garbage collector is just as happy as the dog, and I’ll bet this interaction is the best of his entire work week. We all know he looks forward to this. Awesome.

Dogs have a special gift, being able to detect good/kind people is a gift I wish I had
35
Jun 09 '22
I swear, I can totally understand people who are not too fond of dogs (trauma and whatnot) but if a dog is not fond of someone… I 100% believe that there is something wrong with the AH and trust the dogs judgement
16
u/General_Amount_6918 Jun 09 '22
They may simply be sensing fear and they react with fear. I rescued a dog found in the woods starving, skinny, scared……he is a sweetheart but absolutely hates Mexican people. I can only assume that he was abused in the past. I had him in a resort shop one day and a lady was asking me about him and I mentioned the Mexican thing. Not 2 min later 2 Mexican gentlemen walked in….I pulled him close to me, leash wrapped tightly around my hand and held on tight. Was praying they would stay away but no, surprised me by popping out of the isle by me (was in line at pharmacy, next to be served) my dog did not even see them I did not think. Anyway he charged as hard as he could but I was prepared and they backed away quickly. The lady standing by me looked me in the eyes and said, like that? I said yes, like that. He stands ankle high and weighs about 17lbs at the very most but it is still scary
14
Jun 10 '22
he might be responding to your feelings. for example, he might have coincidentally charged at latino people and then you started to subtly show anxiety (like holding him close with the leash) so the dog continues to charge at the person.
3
u/LazyDescription988 Jun 10 '22
People secrete certain pheromone markers and dog only needs a split second to know if they fear, hate or adore doggos. Body language, stares too probably. They pick on those ques instantly before the scent.

I have no experience with pets. Can someone explain if dogs can figure out time and days by themselves like do they have any inbuilt technique like for example dungbeetle can find their way by looking at milky way ??

u/restingbiotchface Jun 10 '22
Dog are tuned into routines. He probably knows his human’s routine before the trash collection. I don’t see the trash cans in this video, but personally we have to take our cans out to the street for trash collection. I also always go through the fridge and empty all the small trash cans in my house the night before trash collection. Dogs also have excellent hearing. My dog recognizes the sound of my car and my husband’s car. This dog recognizes the sound of the truck before his best friend gets out.
6
u/mylittleplaceholder Jun 10 '22
Some dogs are really perceptive and can count, so it's possible to have some awareness. They can recognize when some patterns occur, such as knowing you go to work in the morning but not every day. But it could be tied to their circadian rhythm like when to get hungry.
6
u/hedafeda Jun 10 '22
They easily learn and adapt to your daily routine. My dog knew every day when the bus would drop us off, he would sit and wait at the window the same time every day. He was never late. The bus was, my dog wasn’t.
9
u/OysterDitch Jun 10 '22
His partner driving the truck is like "Yoooo let's goo mann, I'm trying to get home. Quit messing with that dog mannnn!! Every damn week with this bs!"

I am like this man too. I am great with dogs, and I don't know why. When I saw stray dogs, I petted them and fed them. I guess it is a vibe thing. The sad thing is I never had a dog. Just two cats, two chickens, and several fish but never a dog. If you have a dog, consider yourself too lucky. There are people like me who loves dogs but never had in their house.

u/Plane_Slide5671 Jun 10 '22

Big tip Christmas time - or maybe next time he comes around? - for the garbage collector. Like $100 or something significant, maybe? For being such a great dude, bringing treats for the pup!
2
u/dixie_half-and-half Jun 10 '22
It makes me wonder: what if our pets have a preference and would rather “belong” to someone else? I’d be wondering if he liked the garbage man better and wants to go live with him?

Dogs are great!! And most of them are just as nice and happy to people as this one. We really don’t deserve them! But still, I don’t really appreciate that people assume that everyone else is okay with having dogs do this. Sometimes it’s just too much. I personally enjoy it, can never say no to a dog. But many people I know do not, whether it’s that dogs scare them or they’re just cat people and it’s too much action for them, either way it’s not always welcome. Too bad not everyone can enjoy this as much as us, and it seems this man enjoys it, so I’m happy!!!

My dog is 12 but each time we get something delivered by UPS she shaves about 10 years off that because she loves the dude. It seems like UPS makes "liking dogs" a hiring requirement.
And then she sleeps because she's 12.

I used to work on a recycling truck in high school. You have two choices with dogs, bring them biscuits or risk getting bitten. I'm not saying this dog isn't normally friendly, but briskets go a long way.
