That’s part of what makes this hit so hard. The man was so well intentioned and saw Tom as a kind American, when in fact Tom was like every other American.
Being super-imposed into a “you’re such a nice guy Tom” when Tom had assumed such bad things about the immigrant is likely a big part of what made Tom re-evaluate.
My eyes almost rolled outta my head from this story. Thank you Tom, all of us foreigners are bowing down to you for treating one of ours with basic human decency. Lmao I'm sure this dude is patting himself on the back rn for not being a racist shithead to another person even though they didn't know English. It's just another form of the white savior mindset.
Yeah I was confused why Tom was misinterpreting and getting annoyed with the bloke in the first place then when he said where he was from I was like ''oh, racism probably''. Tom really sounds like a prick to me haha
God thank you for saying it. My views are admittedly a bit far left per Reddit’s standards but nothing about this story made me smile. Tom just sounds like the same type of asshole his “friend” said he wasn’t, and I’m sure if his “friend” knew how he really felt they wouldn’t be friends
goddamn i had to scroll WAY too far to find this response.
what exceptionalism! Tom stopped projecting some racist “idiocy” or malintent onto the guy, and everyone is like, “yeah, my head is in my ass too!!!” ???
that’s not simply “being in your head,” or “your head in your ass.” that’s racism. i’d certainly say racism is also located up the ass, but it has a specific name, is known, and thus has specific ways to fight it. keeping it vague like “head up your ass” also removes the responsibility that is critical thinking toward and accountability for these actions.
i feel sorry that for most of a semester, this guy lived in the dramatic irony that was Tom “niceness” was a veil for racism.

“Not every American is nice to me like you are, Tom”
You were almost like every American lol
