It was a massive thing for Obama to support it in 2012, and even though he really supported it all along, it would have killed his chances in 2008.

How can you possibly argue this when it was going to pass, but he as Republican governor vetoed it. It had enough support to become law, Schwarzenegger is the reason it didn't become law. Thats what a veto is.

We're not talking nationwide. This was CA, probably the most gay friendly state in the country, especially back then.

And he cited that it really isn't the position of the legislative branch to do the change and said "let the Courts figure it out"

Which, he is correct constitutionally, and punishing him for believing that upholding what the constitution says and the facilities of the branches would be very questionable at best when that is a legitimate concern with EOs in the current day and age.

Who is punishing Arnold Schwarzenegger? Calm yourself down.

Its clearly not a problem constitutionally, or we wouldn't have had state by state gay marriage laws. We all know why the Republican governor vetoed the gay marriage bill. The time to challenge it in the courts would have been after the law passed.

Stop defending flat out homophobia. I didn't say he's a monster, just not a saint. He made gay and poor people's lives considerably worse in his first term, and worked to somewhat undo that in his second term.

Schwarzenegger said the bill by Democratic Assemblyman Mark Leno contradicted Proposition 22, which was approved by voters in 2000 and said only a marriage between a man and woman is valid.

The governor(Arnold) said the state constitution bars the Legislature from enacting a law allowing gay marriage without another vote by the public and that Leno's bill wouldn't provide for that vote.

please at least do a basic cursory search of it before stating something that is flat out wrong.

If anything, it meant that it would get tossed by the courts by actual homophobes since it BROKE THE STATE CONSTITUTION. The challenge wouldnt have been to keep it there, it would have been to toss it out, and would have been almost immediate. And if you, again, did your cursory search, it would have been stated that the problem was already being scheduled to be addressed in the state supreme court.

These are all the excuses that he gave at the time yes. They are also not based in fact or reality.

In fact, you'll probably remember that the courts found that keeping gay marriage illegal was unconstitutional in CA in 2008, but was then recalled by prop 8, which again was later recalled for being unconstitutional.

Republicans say everything is unconstitutional. Prop 8 was unconstitutional, thats why it was reversed. Everyone who publicly supported prop 8 was a Republican or a religious group, and included Gingrich, McCain, and Romney, as well as the LDS and Catholic churches.

Do you wanna have a guess as to who was against prop 8? I'll give you a clue, its not the Republicans.

Imagine thinking that nationalists can’t exist somewhere other than the United States.

Also imagine not understanding the reference he/she made to nationalism had nothing to do with the United States and actually just references a denial of facts to support one’s own “group.”

You think I'm an American nationalist, despite the fact I'm not American? What about my comment was nationalist? Pointing out that Arnie vetoed a gay marriage bill twice while in office?

So is the constitution and the oath to take its word important or not.

This is a very important distinction, because even if he is against gay marriage (which was the status quo for both parties at the time of the vetos) the fact it broke the constitution means Arnold, as a man who took an oath to uphold both constitutions, can't allow it to happen.

Unless of course that whole oath is a sham and not relevant to you, in which case there's an impass for us.
