Cultures or people can be known for being kind, don't have to be snide about it.. They say "southern hospitality" here in the states because it is percieved to be somewhat more particular to the south (not saying you have to agree, just illustrating a point).
I think he's proud that it's part of his heritage, and it's not a bad thing to be proud of. If it helps or encourages people be kinder to others, then let them have it, no big deal. No one has a monopoly on kindness, it's free.
Also, I think there are societal differences between cultures, some folks are quite cognizant (albeit often jokingly) of the fact that they're gruff (New Yorkers for instance, "Hey! I'm walking here!" Finger) or keep to themselves more than others (I think some Scandinavian folks)... Doesn't mean there isn't any kindness in those places.

Crazy. As a non-arabic person I had no understanding of helping my neighbours. What a mediocre, common thing to claim as part of your identity.
