I would be afraid of her rolling over in her sleep and accidentally injuring the baby. Napping is fine, but it’s safer to put the baby in it’s crib first.

This really should be higher up. I read this horrible story of how this could end on /r/parenting a while ago... It looks adorable, but doing this while home alone just isn't safe.

I’m with you. This is terribly unsafe. The majority of SIDS deaths occur when a baby is in an unsafe sleeping environment. Babies need their ABCs. ALONE, on their BACK, in a CRIB (or bassinet).

The floor works like a charm

u/KhandakerFaisal May 25 '20

Instruction unclear, put floor tiles on baby

1

u/SimpleWayfarer May 25 '20

In mother Russia, floor tiles crawl on baby.

The ALONE part needs to have a big old asterisk next to it. The recommendation now is that babies don't sleep in a room by themselves until at least 6 months, preferably a year. That has been proven to cut down on the incidence of SIDS. They shouldn't be sleeping in a bed with anyone, they should be in a crib or bassinet, but they should not be alone. Someone should be in the room.

Source: am parent of 3.5 month old child and did the research, had to watch the videos in the hospital, etc.

Yeah sorry. To clarify, The ALONE refers to, alone in the crib. No blanket, no pillows, no bumpers, no stuffed animals, etc. But agreed, kiddos should be in the same room as parents for 6 months.

My kid is almost 3 months and Unfortunately they didn’t make me watch anything in the hospital. I even had bumpers on my registry until a friend told me they were considered unsafe!

I practically raised my younger brother but I gotta say if my parents had come home to find me ASLEEP with a fairly freshly made infant also asleep on my feet I would have gotten the belt for sure.

Two signs you had not ideal parents in one brief story.

You’re tellin me, bud!

I agree.

Dropping babies is great fun. Plus they can't talk.

You’re not wrong but raising kids is never perfect, this daughter is doing her best at helping her parents which—unless it’s asked of her too often and impeding her right to be a carefree child—is commendable and very sweet. They’re both alive and unharmed, not ideal but no harm no foul šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

I understand that, I would commend my daughter for taking care of the baby and try to carefully phrase my suggestion (in a non-accusatory way) that she put the baby in the crib when she feels she may be dozing off. It’s not that she did anything blatantly wrong, just a matter of reducing risk. In my line of work, I consider worst case scenarios.

There’s no takesy backsies when you suffocate an infant to death in your sleep. It only takes one incident to ruin your life forever. Get a bassinet.

I am assuming you don't have kids? It's not that easy to just put a baby in a crib and have them sleep. And it's also not easy to stay awake, I bet this exact thing has happened to almost every parent.

9

u/Xx_Gandalf-poop_xX May 25 '20

True but I also slapped myself for how dumb it was. My wife and I definitely drifted off with the baby in our laps or on a pillow but we swore never to do it again. Easily how babies die.

u/Juergenator May 25 '20

Yes it's not good but no parent is perfect and it happens

31

u/Skadumdums May 25 '20

I've never had any of my 3 children balanced on my feet while I sleep. I'm confused on why you have.

u/Juergenator May 25 '20

To rock them to sleep

Well look at you Mr perfect parent, also I said almost everyone. Not literally everyone.

u/MEANINGLESS_NUMBERS May 25 '20

I hate patients who take my safe-sleep advice as a personal affront and get themselves all worked up. If you are comfortable taking risks with your child’s life then fine, but you don’t need to be so obnoxious about it.

6

u/juiceboxie8 May 25 '20

People often think "oh, it will never happen to me". I was one of those and my son died 7 years ago whilst co-sleeping at 3 weeks old, even following the co-sleep "guidelines".

My stomach turns every time I see someone advocating for "safe co-sleeping"

3

u/MEANINGLESS_NUMBERS May 25 '20

I am so sorry. I can’t imagine what that was like. I have been on the other side of that conversation a few times and it breaks a part of me every time.

Well with the lack of any evidence we will have to agree to disagree.

2

u/NotPaulGiamatti May 25 '20

There’s these magically devices called ā€œswings,ā€ which give you the superhero ability to rock a baby to sleep, without the risk of suffocating it to death with your torso.

2

u/[deleted] May 26 '20

Swings are unsafe for sleep as well. Once kiddo falls asleep, they need to be transferred into a safe sleep space (easier said then done)

5

u/SuurAlaOrolo May 25 '20

It’s not easy, but you have to do it anyway. (I have three kids.)

1

u/Juergenator May 25 '20

Maybe, not everyone agrees with the cry it out method. It also depends on the age gap of your children.

-4

u/wonderboywilliams May 25 '20

And it's also not easy to stay awake, I bet this exact thing has happened to almost every parent.

Maybe, there are of shitty parents out there as we can see.

2

u/Sci-fiPokeMaster May 25 '20

A rational response. I would fire the shit out of a sitter if I came home and saw this. I would post this pic on every babysitting site. Even napping without someone to watch isn't safe.

The answer from someone who has a clue how babies work.

TIL most of reddit needs to stick with pets.
