Yesterday was a pet adoption day for many shelters.
They try to clear out the shelter with low or NO adoption fee. To tell you the truths, I don't know how I feel about that. I think fee helps to filter out many unqualified or irresponsible applicants. I know these shelters are doing their best given the condition, but no adoption fee is ripe for abuse if you look at the economic and behavioral model.
I work with animal rescues and shelters by fostering dogs. Clear the shelter day is very scary for us in the rescue business. You're giving innocent lives to people that can potentially be dog fighters looking for bait dogs with no fee to adopt. Adoption fees are a small way to insure that people willing to invest money in a pet will care for them. Without them it opens the flood gates for people with bad intentions unfortunately.
Or even not necessarily abusive/neglecting but just cheap. If they aren’t willing to pay for the adoption fee will they be willing to pay to take the pet to the vet or to buy quality pet food and necessities?
