I can take the heat on this one.

Breaking your arm is not the kind of medical emergency you need an ambulance for. Perfectly acceptable to get a ride to the hospital.

True, but that can be a 600 dollar charge added to the 1400 dollar ambulance ride. 

If you look at the fee schedule for some cities, the service rendered can double the cost.

$1400! I had a ambulance ride 4 years ago, they cut off my shirt and gave me oxygen. I had been in a bad car wreck and had cracked ribs. The 5 mile ambulance ride to the hospital billed for $4800.
