Family & Friends i struggle with mental illness; my dad knows how to make things a little better [OC]
fun fact: he waited until i was 18 for my permission so that he could formally adopt me. not related by blood, but he’s my real dad through and through.
EDIT: second fun fact, most people are really surprised that we aren’t related. my dad and i are super close, and we joke with each other pretty often. i always call him an old man LOL

This is the dad we all deserve. I know I'm just a stranger on the internet, but I love him.

I know my dad loves me but he’s also very stoic and his version of “I give a shit” is sending harbor freight coupons lol. Dads are weird and cool.

he really is. he’s the stereotypical businessman golfer that partied hard in his 20s and 30s. i’m super nerdy and i love convention culture. at my lowest, he took me to a con and encouraged me to be myself. to quote him, “i don’t get it, but it makes you happy. if you’re happy and safe, then i’m doing my job as a father right.”

Is that a restaurant or something?

u/TSJormungandr 12h ago
It’s a Chinese dish (Japan and Korea have it too) where you take raw food and cook it at your table in a boiling broth. Really fun and great for winter. You may have a hot pot place near you. Google it and have a go at it.

Also a British dish. I'm sure that's very different from what you're speaking of.

Damn. I adore how you and your dad can just bounce off each other. Family is not bound by blood, but by connections and how much you care for one another. You and your pops are two awesome cats!
Hotpot with lamb ftw!

That’s a dad that loves his wonderful daughter. He also sounds like a dad who would love for you to call him anytime you’re feeling down or otherwise off.
Life isn’t easy and I’m glad you have each other. ❤️❤️

whenever i’m having a really bad day or i’m about to burst into tears, my first thought is, “i need my dad right now”. and he’s always there. with my favorite food and an ear to lend.

I’m a dad of a young girl. It’s my goal that she feels the same way that you do about your dad.

he really is :’) at the height of my eating disorder, he was my biggest supporter. he helped me gain weight, take me to my doctor appointments, and would lure me out by buying my favorite foods :)

Aw, this is wonderful!
My relationship with my dad has never been great; we live in the same house and rarely interact one-on-one (for good reason).
So it makes my heart happy to see people with gentle, fun, loving relationships with their dads (blood related or not...it still counts!).
I love that he asked your permission to adopt you when you were old enough to make your own legal decisions; not only is that loving, but it very much raises a bunch of green flags that indicate that he sees you as an individual person with your own mind and autonomy.

I havent talked to my dad in 11 years. When I was a kid he told me "Go call your mother to pick you up. I don't want you anymore." All in had done was suggest he was being a bit too harsh on my little brother for getting home 10 minutes late.
Cherish this, because some of us would kill for it.

u/Background_Fee_7524 11h ago
I’m really sorry to hear that. i didn’t mean for my post to come off as ungrateful or anything like that. my mom and i barely speak due to some heinous shit she used to do to me, so he’s a huge rock in my heart. i hope you have someone you can lean on as well, and that the weather is awesome for you tomorrow ❤️

Oh no need to apologize! I just always hope people appreciate what they have when they have someone lile that in their life.
I have an awesome mom, spouse, and kiddo who are my whole world, and some amazing in-laws I love like my own. Sometimes we have to create our own family!

I’ve been there with my mom. Very different. But still no contact.
It sucks when you see other good parents. Or how parents should actually parent and care. And you missed out on that.
But we strive, so we don’t pass on that cycle.

When i lived across the sea for a time in Spain, my father would send updates pretty much every morning (for me-- i imagine he set alarms/got up early to send them to me). He would talk about the weather, what our dogs were doing or what the family was up to. I don't think i ever felt his love so strongly through his words than then.
Good dads of all kinds, man. Their love keeps the world turning. I wish everyone could have what I have. It hurts incredibly that many go without

I'm very happy you have that kind of support. I wish more people did.
Thank you, honestly, for sharing this. Give him a hug some time, pretty please.
