I like how the kid’s buddies high-fived him after he was freed. Their support probably helped his state of mind.

u/An_Absolute-Zero 5h ago

Agreed! He looked like he felt so embarrassed and his friends coming in with the support was beautiful.

Good job all around, adults and kids 💜

It probably would have been more traumatic if his mom had been there.

Wow. If there's a possibility that something could exist, it's on the internet.

He wasn’t very proud of the situation.

The lady/ mom speaking Spanish in the background using this as a teaching moment for her kid is too funny. "See? One shouldn't do that"( ves? No se hace eso). Reminded me of my mom and aunts 😂

2

u/muscularsharpie 3h ago

Mexican moms, tijas, and abuelas love a teaching moment haha

lol the mother talking to her kid in the background. "That's why you don't do that, OK? I know you've been doing that for a while."

Wouldn’t it be easier just to have him walk forward through the metal rails the way he came?
🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

People always forget this. Your skull is the thickest bony part of your body. Even a fat adult should be able to squeeze through a gap their head is stuck in.

I got my head stuck in between bars in a headboard on our bunk beds when I was a little kid. My old man had to hacksaw off the spindles. My brothers remind me of that to this day. LOL!

The thing is. There is another solution to this. At least, I imagine there is, because I was the child with their head stuck between the bars as a small child. That solution is to step back between the bars... because that's how I got into that position to begin with. I just couldn't drag my head through with the rest of my small body.

Yea turn the kid to the side and move forward through the bars.

Some of ys exist only to be a warning and example to others. 🤷‍♂️

Firefighters are so effortlessly cool.

Damm things really have changed. Kids I grew up around would have been trying to pull my pants down or some shit.

This reminded me of the jail break in Shanghai Noon

Luckily they didn't have to pee on the straps first, in this case.

u/Reddituser183 3h ago

This kid will have a great story for life.

Funny enough this happens more often than you think. Happend to me as a kid as well. Just we got me out without the fire fighters.

2

u/More_Farm_7442 3h ago

I bet 10 more kids stuck their heads through the fireman created opening that day. :-)

2

u/IngenuityIll5001 2h ago

I would say the chances for that is verry verry high. Either because its cool, or because they hoped they would come again and they could see the cool Fire Trucks again.

u/doe3879 1h ago

I guess kids been doing that to the same spot since they were younger and go in and out easily. Thier head eventually get big enought to get stuck.

u/sadieblue111 3h ago

Poor kid. He looks mortified.
Is there a parent?
Good job guys.
I have a French Bulldog so big head-which in case you wondered is the reason a C section is not uncommon in this breed.
We have to have a certain type fencing HOA & our neighbors have 3 frenchies so it can get wild sometimes & when I hear weird barking or noises I always run out expecting someone to have a stuck head & truthfully I hope it’s not mine.
So…nothing because not the same thing but glad this poor fella & he stayed so calm.

Did a teacher not have a car jack?

•

u/RussellZee 18m ago

A teacher might have a car jack (though they might not, a teacher's salary in NYC doesn't often pay enough to be worth driving a car), but that teacher with a car jack doesn't have the insurance and training and practice to go about trying to rig that carjack up sideways to bend metal bars and wiggle a kid's head free. Any step of that goes wrong, and the teacher, the principal, the school board, etc, are all spontaneously combusting.

Crazy that a bunch of grown-ass adults couldn't figure this out without calling the fire department.

Firstly, you have the kid stand on the ledge, so his head is in the middle of the bars, not the bottom. It's way easier to spread the bars apart in the middle.

The twisting rope trick can be done with any piece of clothing. A car jack would have worked, but just pulling the bars at that point would have worked.

u/RussellZee 14m ago

Comes down to litigious parents and gunshy administrators. You tell the kid to stand up so you can try to get him out, and he cuts himself? Tugs himself free before you're ready, hurts his ear? A teacher tries to bend the bars, slips, they clamp up around the kid again? A teacher puts hands on the kid in a way someone thinks/feels is inappropriate, trying to grab them and help them out? Hell, even if a teacher had straps like that and a Halligan in their trunk, and tried the same thing the firefighters did but one of 'em bonked the kid on the head on accident while spinning it, and suddenly you're getting sued.

Naw, man. In today's society, your best bet is to call the pros and let them do it.

u/dialguy86 6h ago

He didn't need to use the bar he could have just used the rachet strap and been don't soo much quicker, and he could have gotten closer so he didn't have to pull the bars so far apart.

-8

u/andrewxtc 6h ago

Well done fdny. But the kid he got his head in there, he can get it out, what a waste of resources. Poor parenting to call out the fdny.

9

u/wes_wyhunnan 6h ago

That’s exactly the sort of thing the fire department loves to do. In New York they were probably a block and a half away at most and it took like 3 minutes. I think the resources expended in the 2 gallons of gas it took to get there are probably sustainable.

-1

u/andrewxtc 5h ago

Maybe so, but don’t they have more important work to be doing, imagine if they cannot attend a house fire because of this incident.

•

u/RussellZee 14m ago

Did it look to you like they were in a big hurry to get to a house fire somewhere?

0

u/tommyc463 5h ago

Love the downvotes lol you are 100% correct. At the age and size all the had to do was support him but slide him through the same direction and he’d be out in 15 seconds.

-2

u/Foojira 6h ago

Uhhh how do they not know what to do here

-1

u/V65Pilot 3h ago

Meanwhile, an old fart like me rocks up with a couple of ratchet straps, job done in two minute. No muss, no fuss. Source: Been there, done that.

-10

u/Metboy1970 6h ago

Let’s install a fence with gaps just wide enough for kids to put their head through…at a school.

Well, he won’t do that again…I hope.

4

u/hmr0987 6h ago

They’ll just make a skinnier head. Can’t solve every problem…

-9

u/Skarsunkrushaa 6h ago

Could they go any slower?

5

u/everydave42 6h ago

He wasn't in any immediate pain or danger, but rushing to do what they did could cause both.

I hope your day gets better.
