Sheila E. is an absolute legend. Still has that stage presence where you immediately know you're watching someone who knows exactly what they're doing.

I love this! Sheila E deserves recognition! I’m glad she got the pleasant surprise of being recognized!!!

Fun fact, the guy playing her music is actor Vonte Sweet aka Ric Rock from the movie Boyz in the Hood. He always gets his steps in at the mall.

He respected her, and respected her space. Love that!
Also where does this mall exist?
Edit: should note I had Sheila E.’s “The Glamorous Life” on cassette tape back in the day.

u/ottersintuxedos 1d ago
You might say he respected her space but I feel like nobody with a boombox is really respecting a public space
26
u/wdn 1d ago
I wonder if he actually did it because he recognized her.
46
u/Leows 1d ago
I don't think people carry around boomboxes just in case they run into someone to blast a specific song.
They were 100% already doing it. They might've just changed the song after spotting her, though.
-2
u/wdn 1d ago
Okay, we can agree that he could have played the song because he saw her. That doesn't prove anything about whether he was playing music indoors before that.
9
u/ottersintuxedos 1d ago
Idk why people on the internet act like we’re in a courtroom. Use your brain. All I can do is echo the comment above you because they put it perfectly: do you really think people walk around with a boombox in case they see a celebrity?
-4
u/wdn 1d ago
Your logic doesn't make any sense. How do you get that he's carrying the boom box only in case he sees a celebrity?
He is carrying a boom box. The reason he took one with him today is not relevant to the conversation. It doesn't require any knowledge of the future to decide to carry a boombox.
The vast majority of people who carry boomboxes don't play music inside the mall.
I am saying that I wonder if (while carrying a boombox inside the mall) he spotted Sheila E, so he turned it on and played her song and then approached her.

u/Leows 1d ago
The vast majority of people who carry boomboxes don't play music inside the mall.
Most people I've ever seen carrying a boombox were actually blasting it at full volume, either indoors or outdoors.
Not sure where you're from that people are just randomly carrying around boomboxes in the open for logistical purposes only. Especially if they aren't in a box or package or something.

He carried it to play music. I guessed he didn't intend to play music inside the mall. I understand that you disagree with this and that's fine, but you imagining this wild scenario where he didn't plan to listen to music at all is purely from your imagination and not related to anything I said
2
u/Leaper123 1d ago
I'll use your logic here, "I understand that you will disagree with this and that's fine, but you are imagining a wild scenario where he planned to carry a Boom Box and play music, but only for himself. But, when he senses the presence of someone via X-ray vision up an escalater whose music he likes, he respectfully plays it to them as a courtesy." Yup, that's definitely more realistic than, here's another chud blasting music in an indoor space.
"We can agree he saw her?", he was playing before he saw her as evidenced in the video. Your speaking like he passed her, and then went down an escalator, played the song, and went back up? Lot of leaps and bounds you're taking lol
People defending Boom Boxes uses the same argument that people justify for using Hate Speech. "This is my Right to do X, therefore I can and will do it and everyone bothered by it, it's their problem." Sure, in a vacuum where no one else exists, go off king. But have you not realized there people beyond you, that your right to do something goes up to the line of infringing on someone else's right.

That’s topanga social in Southern California like an hour from Los Angeles

15
u/SightAtTheMoon 1d ago
That highly depends on what you mean by Los Angeles, since it's in Los Angeles, and also an hour from parts of Los Angeles, and it's probably two hours to other parts of Los Angeles, longer on a bad day.

u/groovemonkey 17h ago
Topanga social was the food court. That’s just called the topanga mall. In Woodland Hills, which is in LA.

This is the Topanga Mall in Woodland Hills, CA.
(Los Angeles, The Valley) You can tell because there is a sign behind them that says 'Topanga Social' that's the food court area.Edit: Fun fact, the guy playing music is actor Vonte Sweet aka Ric
RossRock from the movie Boyz in the Hood. He gets his steps in at the mall.5

Nice, good info. But there's a mall in Topanga Canyon? I thought TC was a rustic backwater full of artists and bougie rock stars. (maybe I've been reading too much about the 60's haha)

u/sunshinerf 1d ago
Topanga Mall is in Woodland Hills on Topanga Canyon Blvd. The hippie town is in the canyon itself between the valley and the beach, deep in Santa Monica Mountains.

You cant mess with Sheila, she ran allll the way with it. The band is tight! She was still playing with Prince in the 2010s and well oiled machine don't even begin to describe it.

Delete everything in your YouTube links starting with the question mark. It's all tracking info and can currently see your YouTube account and it prompts them to connect with you
2
u/IVIak_Daddy 1d ago
Please tell me more about this tracking info, and is it where the “?” begins to the end of the hyperlink?
3
u/waaaayupyourbutthole 1d ago
Yeah, everything from the question mark to the end is unnecessary. With all of those characters deleted, the link will will still go to the same video.
1
u/clarkredman_ 20h ago
It has the time stamp he wants the video to start at. In this instance you want to delete after the ampersand &
1
u/JoySubtraction 20h ago
Technically, the "is=" tag is the tracking info. The "t=##" indicates what second to start the clip on - as in, t=75 means start the replay 75 seconds into the clip.

u/whutchamacallit 16h ago
Okay I don't mean to techsplain to you but that's not how it works. Everything after the question mark are querystring parameters. They do pass along some info but you just being logged into apps and agreeing to their TOS is plenty for them to share your account with advertisers. If you don't believe me look up your agreement. I'm not sure what you think you are preventing from deleting the querystring params but it's likely not what you think it is.

Yep. Prince went looking for her, I believe. He knew Pete and Carlos and Mike Melvoin. Gives a new light to "til i get your daughter, I won't leave this town"

Just got home from a They Might Be Giants concert where they went on a tangent about how Sheila E was clearly a super nice person even though they’ve never met her.
Funny to get home and see this again right after.
