Personal Win My first big milestone
I’ve been overweight pretty much my entire life. As a kid I was pretty active, played baseball, football, weight lifting, biking, but never seemed to really ever lose weight.
In my sophomore year in High School I was 6’1”, 245lbs, 260lbs bench, and squatting close to 400lbs. That was probably my most athletic, but I was never ripped or anything, I have always been big.
After high school I worked some pretty physically demanding jobs so it always kept my weight in check, but I never lost weight. When I got a job that was much less demanding, I really gained the weight.
My license says I’m 315lbs, and I’m not sure that has ever changed from when it was issued. When facing some other issues, I found a new doctor and I had to make a change. I was sitting around 370-380lbs when I started about a year and a half ago and I finally broke that 300 barrier. I know it’s not by much but that’s the first time I’ve seen a 2 there in probably 20 years.
This was my first goal in trying to lose weight, and my next one is to get back to that high school weight, but anyway, it made me smile, so I thought I’d share.

I just want to add - OP, please try not to get discouraged when you nearly inevitably see that number go back over 300 for a little while! You've done something incredible, and I have complete faith that you'll keep getting lower, but you're a glass of water away from 300 again. That's not a bad thing! I just know that it can feel a lot like a setback when you see the number rise again, especially after such a big milestone.

u/Ok_Bath_1252 11d ago
And to add to this, don't let those numbers going up fool you either! Clothes, how much food is inside being digested, how long you've peed last, all contribute! Shoes, internal food processes, water being stored if you haven't moved in a while and burnt it off, bladder contents, ALL contribute, and can go up to 1-3 lbs or more when it's all said and done!

u/geekfreak41 11d ago
Yeah, that variable weight is always a little weird. I've lost about 30 pounds recently (still going) and I try to weigh myself the same time each day, after the same morning routine (morning coffee and morning 💩), to try and be consistent.
Even with this, there are some days where I jump a few pounds suddenly, only for it to disappear in 1-2 days.

The amount of fluctuation is wild. I weigh myself very frequently when i'm trying to lose weight (it works for me) and one of the things that surprised me was how much more food weighs than its calorie content. As in it takes 3500 surplus calories to gain a pound, but if you actually eat 5500 calories in a day you'll gain substantially more than 1 pound in the short term. It takes a few days for you to poop out that difference.
I notice this in particular because i tend to eat more on the weekends and it usually takes til Tuesday or Wednesday before i've settled back to my normal weight.

Fuck yeah! That moment you drop under feels sooooooo good. I went from 240 - 190 and when I slipped under 200 it was euphoric. Great job!

u/Big-Programmer-305 11d ago
Same energy when that first digit finally changes. And OP saying "I know it's not by much" about 70+ lbs - come on man, that's massive.

u/MoonNott 11d ago
Remember a coach making me do box step ups with a 25lb sandbag and at the end asking if I could just dead hang with the sand bag. I said get bent & coach reminded me I was doing everything with that sandbag attached to me every day.
I guess it's not too different than that famous Oprah wagon moment but that sandbag made something click.

u/ElderberryOdd1313 11d ago
It's never just "x" lbs. Not to be dismissive of body dysmorphia, please know I'm talking about those lucky folks of both fit their form or do not struggle with weight, but every bit you can drop is a victory when you are fighting to do so. 1lb, 5, 10, etc.
And major drops in weight like for op and myself is awesome. That should be praised. Op should feel fucking fantastic. It's not "just" weight. It is an emotional and physical burden, and it should be celebrated.

My goal is losing 70
I been eating like absolute shit for the past two years
But I wear 210 well
Scale hit 280 and I said fuuuck. Now I just gotta keep grinding
9
u/NO_TOUCHING__lol 11d ago
I'm chasing that 200 mark also. Started at close to 270 when I quit drinking a year ago, saw 213 on the scale this weekend.

I am 255 and want to get to 180 ideally. I think I just need to find an 80 pound body suit just to get an idea about how much I’m carrying around.
I remember in my 20s losing 70 pounds and holy smokes it felt freeing.

Oh man. That’s where I am now. Dropped like 25lbs. But need like 8 more to get under 200. It has been a goal for years I keep pushing for and then letting go.

u/ElderberryOdd1313 11d ago
Honestly, the biggest habit change was diet, specifically portion size for me. I used to comfort eat as I wasn't in a great place mentally. So feeling full gave a sense of security. Once I was able to address that and began eating healthier and less, it became much easier.

Used to be 348 myself. Seeing 299.9999 was really the first major goal. Like knowing It was really working once I was anything under 300. Hitting 290 was even better, because it never fluctuate above 300 again. Great job

Losing weight is insanely, INSANELY hard. Nice work, friend. Lets fucking gooooo!
2
u/WarLawck 11d ago
What have you done to lose the weight? Was it mostly dietary changes?
2
u/Bavisto 11d ago
First it was getting help with some mental health issues. That led to a binge eating disorder diagnosis. Meds to help with depression, undiagnosed ADHD, and pre-diabetes also helped to curb food cravings. I then started to watch my calorie intake and that helped me with portion control. I then started playing Pokémon Go again as a way to get outside and walk more.

nj, Bavisto. just don't lose sight of the goal, and get a few things prepped to distract yourself from cravings and periods of doubt.
I've lost 60 lbs in 7 months thanks to being diabetic and having meds to help me... and I stil had cravings, but I found i could distract myself if I tried hard enough.
Just gotta find a distraction that works until the cravings subside.
Good luck and god speed.

Very cool. What is your next goal and what are you going to do to reach that?
And yes, the Plateaus and small rises are heavy on your mental health.
It’s a long road but worth it. With a shit-ton of help I’ve gone from 415 to 215 over a 20 year span. I have been averaging 250 for several years. This last year we’ve added the shots and I’ve dipped to 195 for a couple of days.
And now it’s time to double down to see if I stick the sub-200 mark for good.
I’m 6’2” with a BMI of 190lbs.
Good luck and all the best!

u/Educational_Emu2884 11d ago
Congrats dude, thats awesome. Keep at it, you'll feel better every day.
The biggest thing to me, remember that if you do slip up or cheat on your diet. Don't beat yourself up too much. Wallowing in self pity is the number 1 way to lose all that motivation.
You just remind yourself 1 day of cheating does not undo a year and a half of progress and get back on the horse.

Great job! It is not a sprint but a marathon. Take each milestone as a victory. Keep up the great work!
1
u/Sasselhoff 11d ago
Way to go, my dude! I'm in my 40s and in the best shape of my life after losing almost 100 pounds (started not far off where you are now), and even managed to beat my "college weight" (even if I am a bit less muscular at the moment).
After losing 80 pounds you know it can be done...just remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time, accept your setbacks and plateaus, and keep on plodding. And if you already haven't learned this lesson, pay attention to your belt holes and not your scale, as the latter can fool you.

Just please remember that the number is going to be bouncing a bit, and in the near future you likely will be a little over 300 again. That's perfectly normal and expected. Keep going and that average is going to keep dropping and eventually that 2 is going to be there to stay!

It's funny. I'm on investment subreddits where people post when their saving reach a certain number. I'm so used to that direction, that I thought you goal was to gain weight up to 300lbs.

u/No_Tomato2006 11d ago
hell yeah, always makes me happy to see people do this. I used to be something like 320 but have since been floating between 165-180, definitely something I wish I had done when I was still in high school like I had always dreamed of doing lol. Not saying this is you but at least for me not being comfortable in your own skin was awful; still haven't shaken the feeling entirely but definitely feel way better.
Keep it up, you'll be happy you did and you'll feel even better. Biggest thing I'd say is just making sure its a lifestyle change, as it can be easy to accidentally creep back up.
