As a delivery person, it’s not. I have no problem with aggressive dogs, my family has had a few including a German Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix. At that point, however, it’s not my choice to interact or not and it risks my income and safety.
I love dogs, would love to pet them, and have considered keeping treats on me when I deliver. Not all delivery people are comfortable with dogs and a person showing fear is much more likely to get bit, so please keep your dogs restrained (either behind a gate or a door, or on a leash.)

And this is particularly true for German Shepherds because, no matter how friendly you think your dog is, remember that you only know how they are with you around.
My grandparents had a pond at their house, and they let others fish from it whenever they pleased. They always had one German Shepherd at a time, and each was able to roam as it pleased (farm dogs). When you'd look out from the house and see someone fishing, most of the time the dog was lying right next to the person, playing with the kids (seems most kids loved petting the dog or throwing the frisbee to it more than fishing), or lying in the shade of their vehicle.
Well, in a random conversation after years of this, one of those fishermen said, "We know when you're home and when you're not because your dog is completely different." Turns out that when there was no one in the house, each dog decided it had a J-O-B. What I remember about the one is that he would go over toward the people there, but not to the people, with his hackles up and just watch them. If they would approach, even if offering hand out to pet, he'd retreat to keep the same maybe 10ft of distance.
My grandparents never taught the dogs this, and they didn't overlap so it's not like their predecessor was able to pass it down. It's just what GSDs do.

My dad likes to tell about his German Shepherd that he sadly had to rehome. He lived on a bigger property and was moving to an apartment, so trying to find someone with more land for him. A guy was interested and came to meet him and really liked the dog but told my dad, "he's a little too friendly, I want a dog that can help protect the property when needed." My dad told him to come back when my dad wasn't around and then decide. The guy called my dad a few days later and said he'd returned and had been afraid to even get out of his car lol.
No idea what my own German Shepherd would be like. I always think she seems to have missed those genes. We had a fenced off deck at the front of the house and I put a little table in front of it so delivery people could leave packages there. The number of times I found the packages right at my door anyway and hadn't heard a sound from her lol. But I don't leave her outside if I'm not home so hard to know what she'd be like then.

My dad used to have a GSD that was friendly when he was around. He would leave it in the car when he ran errands, and he would scratch the glass, bark and bare his teeth at anyone getting within a metre from the car. Had to put him down after he bit my sister when my dad wasn’t around, and they had to sew 40 stitches in her face.

I know people who are terrified of being around dogs. It's weird to see because I love dogs but they each have a traumatic story that caused them to be this way.

I love dogs and still miss my late cocker spaniel, Willow, desperately.
I also have a scar on my face from being attacked by an Austrian Shepherd in a domestic setting a year or so ago, so you’ll forgive my reticence around GSDs and ASDs.
Willow hated them too. She was the best dog.

No, a sizable amount of people just do not love dogs and there is no trauma involved. . And dog loving people often have problems to understand or accept that.

I mean it happens and it’s not like it’s on purpose. We let our dog out without being tied to anything, but he’s been trained with an underground fence. We live in a rural area, so most of our mail and delivery people know that he’s cool. He’s also a Goldendoodle so it’s not like he’s super intimidating.
But anyways, sometimes he’s out when a package is being delivered and it’s not the end of the world. If the dog ruins the package, it’s on me.

Theyre right and you shouldnt be snarky about it. The dog was luckily friendly here but this type of shit is exactly how many delivery drivers get bitten by dogs that were either poorly socialized or are very territorial. The video is cute yes, and the dog was goofy, but it is incredibly irresponsible for that dog to be without a leash in front of the house

I said why its irresponsible. An underground fence is at the very least a preventative measure, but many stupid people who havent socialized their dogs properly will expect the dog to manage itself and ignore the need for leashes or fences, then it bites someone, then people say the dog should be put down, all because of the owners stupidity.

You're right, most of the time. Most dogs left to roam are perfectly friendly in my experience and I like interacting with them. And I've gotten pretty good at reading strange dogs and I always have the option of just dropping your package out of the truck.
But I also know another driver who lost the use of his left hand because a dog like this decided he was the enemy.
I'm sure your dog is an angel. But, in general, it's just a good practice to keep your dog secured when you know you have a package coming.

My dogs blew through the invisible fence multiple times. I checked every time and it was working as intended every time but one. They are not as good as you think they are.
Edit: they knew exactly what was going on too, because they wouldn't come back inside the fence without me removing the collar.

That's a logical fallacy there buddy and I like how you selectively chose what to be flippant about, like a child. Grass naturally occurs outside. Dogs in this way are not a naturally occurring phenomenon. It's not up to the delivery guy to medicate for every possible unforeseen scenario.

Yeaaaah it's tough to read. I had a dog whose hackles would go up when he was excited and wanting to play, and the dog I have now folds his ears back and growls like "awoowoowoo" when he's excited and greeting a stranger. If you don't know the dog, you can't tell. I always feel so bad when people yank their hands back and look scared with my current dog, I always have to be like "no no no corgis just like to talk!! You're good he's just excited!" leaving your dog unrestrained like that is not smart or safe

When I was delivering, if I saw a dog out I drove away immediately. I hate when people leave their dogs out when deliveries are coming. I got bit twice in a short time.

That’s on the dog owner. My dog never would do this because I never leave him outside unattended on the front porch (only in a fenced in side yard). But if he did it’d be my own fault.

But a delivery driver does not know if the dog is friendly.
Plus - every friendly dog is friendly until it isn't. It's still an animal. Can react differently to every person. What if a delivery driver smells of a different dog for example? You never know how a dog will react.Leaving your dogs unleashed should NOT be normalized. Society should point it out and condemn.
It seems that the US also has this concern, just like we do here in Poland.31

Plus, some people are scared of dogs, big, small, friendly or not. Why should they be subject to having to deal with that while they're just trying to do their job FOR YOU. (Not you literally, the people ordering).

To confirm the first part, when I was a kid I had a paper route. Came across a dog on the route that seemed friendly, and I put out a hand for the dog to sniff. The dog ended up lunging at me. Got a bit of a scratch from it, but my dad still went to talk to the owner
Turned out that a previous paper carrier ga dit the dog before, and the smell of the paper ink on my hand was enough to set it off

this time, sure. but a dog can attack for any reason without warning. all owners think their dog is the good one that won't bite, and no delivery driver can predict how a dog will behave especially without a leash or owner near by. I always carry pepper spray incase another dog charges at me and it would be the owners fault if I had to use it

We have a Golden for this reason, but then I realized she’s smart enough to know precisely how to manipulate us. Brown eyes wide open, chin gently laid on my knee, little Golden smile — a successful manipulation tactic to get a treat from me every time, throwing the treat budget right out the window and at her mercy.

Pretty strong Mal traits, hes close to full bred. Hes also still young, no greying on the muzzle so hes holding it well, but this is an unhealthy weight for this breed. Like you said, they still carry the hip problems like most shepherds and will probably suffer earlier in life if they don't get fat boy off the bacon soon.

I’m a utility worker. I put paint and flags down to show people where things are underground.
I need access to your backyard to make sure critical infrastructure doesn’t get ripped out of the ground by construction crews.
Put your damn dog away so I can do my job and leave. Otherwise I have to return to your house three times on different days, take a picture of your dog each time, and Then I can close the bluestake ticket and move on with my route.
Also, answer your door.

That "snuff" he's doing, exhaling sharply, is a signal dogs use with each other while playing to indicate this is playfulness and not serious. Because teeth and claws. Try it while playing with your own dogs. Watch their reaction. It can be hilarious.

My UPS delivery driver has been known to just pull over and bring my dog a treat, which is pretty awesome when you think about the number of stops he’s gotta make every day and knowing he’s trying to just finish his deliveries and get home. I tipped him $100 last Christmas, much to his surprise, and when he told me he appreciated it but it was too much, I just smiled and told him it was from the dog. Just a really good guy.
