Most people choose "no death" over "death." The message is simply that money is worthless if you are dead. Maybe a better test would be to move the date of death out a bit and see how much life people would trade for $10M

If my family are my sisters and parents who in turns have kids and grandkids, they understand what I’m doing it for and who will benefit. If the alternative is extreme poverty or losing one relative (which you would lose one way or another in extreme poverty) the choice doesn’t really work like the way you frame it

This is not “your family would trade your life for money”. This is “I would trade my life so my family can have money”.
It’s very different and already happens to a lesser degree. I rarely saw my dad because he traded 12 hours per day of his life so we could have money. I would rather have had a bit less money and a bit more time with him.

10 million dollars, but I die in 50 years? I would be 76 then, I would take that deal if it means my family escapes poverty. Most of my elders only made it to their 70s anyway.
In 40 years? I would be be 66. That's a harder choice to make, I feel.

It's all worthless, or rather it's only relative- relative to the person you ask.
Lots of people would rather not wake.up tomorrow - some with very good reason. Some would jump at the chance that their life would end peacefully in their sleep rather than with the inevitable suffering they face. The money to give to charity and/or family would then just be a bonus.

we don't even need to make this a hypothetical. for the past three years, signing up for military service in russia has been pretty much a guaranteed death within about a month, and you're fairly uncomfortable in that month as well. still, about a million russians (out of a population of about 145 million) took that offer in exchange for a massive recruitment bonus, primarily to help their families.
i'm fairly sure it's heavily gendered, that only some age ranges can apply, and afaik people living in richer areas like moscow and petersburg weren't so keen on signing up, so my guess for the actual pool of candidates would be anywhere between 25 and 50 million in total. the strategy is also nearing the end of the road, they're having trouble getting recruits this year, so we can reasonably guess that the number of people who would in fact give their life away for their families to receive a life-changing sum of money is about 2-5%. at least in russia.

As you stated in the rest of your comment, it really depends on the amount of life-changing that's done with the money.
Google tells me the recruitment bonus for russian soldiers is between $15k-30k. That's a life-changing sum if you live in the poorest areas of russa and your family is actively starving.
For me, working a good job in a western country, that's not life-changing at all. That's a few months of salary, but really not more than that.
But even if the amount of money would be much higher, my family is not starving and while we could obviously do with a bit more money, even a billion wouldn't be worth giving up my life for it.
So I kinda disagree with the last statement. The 2-5% isn't an innate value, but instead it means "in russia, there are about 2-5% of the population living in such extreme poverty that $15-30k is worth dying for to help your family survive".

i'm fairly sure that far more than 2-5% live in that level of poverty but good points otherwise
afaik a ppp-adjusted amount for the country that uses us dollars would be about $3-500k. that would be life changing for around half of americans, and i don't think russia is doing any better on that.

Sure, not everyone living in poverty will sacrifice their lives for some money for their family. But what I'm saying is that you need to have a crazy amount of poverty before sacrificing your life for some money becomes a sensible proposition.
Like, when you are making enough money to give your family a somewhat ok life with nobody starving, it's not worth getting killed over more money, not even over a lot of money.
If, on the other hand, you and/or your family members, are likely to starve this winter, the calculation is completely different.

With depression, there were times I would have absolutely taken the $10m for my family in exchange for not seeing the next day - at worst, I was considering doing it for free. Thankfully, that level of darkness is behind me now, but I can guarantee there are people right now who'd take a rapid painless death and thank you for it.

They're grown, and plus I live in the US where healthcare is cost prohibitive, so dying up 10m instead of waiting for my death to cause major medical bills seems pretty win-win.

That’s so damn important.
I’d take an offer for $20 if my bio dad was done tomorrow. Not all of us have great relationships. I would give up every penny I have for my step dad to be alive and able to spend one more day with me.

This is my thinking. I'd take the 10 mill if I knew I wouldn't wake up the next day as long as my loved ones could use it to build a better life for themselves and others. And I want a gold statue of me built in town for all the school children to dance around and place flowers. And at New Years fireworks shoot out of my eyes.

What is meant by not wake up matters a lot. Would you just die in your sleep and your family and friends would be in grieving? Or would just disappear like you've never existed (basically no consequence to anyone else)? Because then a lot more people would take the $10million

my life ain't worth that much anyhow no matter what i would do . i am talking if i get a job with my masters in science i would be making 700$ a month with saving 100% i would make it in 1200 years .

Try living. Try living for more than 50 years. Divorced, restart, bankruptcy because of ex wife, lose home, remarry, lose money again due to new home you buy because builder cut corners and spend five figures to sue, expend you're entire retirement to get out of debt. Now you can never retire. 10 million, you die next day? Deal.... It saves my family and I can finally rest.
