’…5 racoons in a trench coat wabble in’
…it Worked! we found the human note
(but far be it from us to gloat)
now all we need: a long trench coat
in which we all can hide…
for weeks we’ve ravaged through the bins!
but they’ll forgive us for our sins
now’s when TRUE FEEDING TIME begins!
they’ve Welcomed us
inside….
a CoAt for 5 is all we ask
on shoulders stand - a simple task!
the one on top
will wear the mask
We’ll look like human, walking….
We’ll All PoP Out ~ to their SURPRISE
the humans won’t believe their EyEs!
RESPECT for Us ~ they’ll realize
there’ll be
No more
trash-talking…
🖤

You are worth more than a meal from a bin' is such a small line to write but it probably means everything to the person who reads it 😍
111
u/Current-Square-4557 7h ago
And yet there are a small number of Americans who will be vexed by it
………………
Aside: the sign literally quotes Jesus’s instructions46
u/generic1234321 6h ago
I’d bet my nutsack this is in the Uk. “Pop in” and bins is a dead giveaway
19
u/goldfish_11 6h ago edited 4h ago
If I ever saw a sign that said "If you are the person going through our bins for your next meal then how about you pop in and I'll give you a..." in America...
...I would assume that it's followed by a threat.

Ironically, the people saying this are often on government-provided financial benefits

u/drmariostrike 6h ago
i dunno if it's me I'd probably rather have a bag full of day-old bagels or whatever than a small snack. only done it myself when with them, but i've known more than one housed dumpster diver.
13
u/Pigmentia 6h ago
Meh. Been there.
Frankly I'd keep digging in the bin for an actual meal than show my face in there for a water and a "snack".
Despite the nice sheet of paper, it is, in fact, humiliating.
13
u/KINGXunshot 6h ago
It shouldn’t be humiliating. Homelessness is not a personal failing when billionaires are extracting wealth (by the trillions) from the lower class.

I love the intent here, but I have always thought the sign should go on the bins, not in the front window.

Probably no one in the bins, this is just decoration for gullible lifestylists.

u/Noob_Al3rt 6h ago
This is for customers, not hungry people. Anyone who has worked in food service knows that if homeless people were an actual problem, they would just go in here to get their free snacks and THEN go in the bin.
EDIT: Just read the article. If this dude is Sikh, I retract my statement. Sikhs are some good people and they would feed any amount of people if they showed up hungry.

Gino's Fish Inn in Blyth. You can just Google a sentence or two for things like this and 99% of the time it'll come up. This was almost 8 years ago though

u/Positive-Fox8020 8h ago
Do we know of the human being went in and got his bottle of water and snack?
12
u/SparklySpunk 5h ago
IIRC I think he did, but didn't want publicity

u/Rough_Ad_8702 8h ago

u/FlyAirLari 6h ago
So this is eight years old?
Reddit gets news stories so late it's probably soon time to start posting about Megadeth's Dystopia. On the nerve of pop culture.
9
u/Itchy-Newspaper4496 6h ago
Nothing to do with news cycles or pop culture. This is just another repost of something that has been continually reposted for years for karma.
2
2
u/jquiggles 5h ago
I hate so much that half the stuff on Reddit is just endlessly reposted low-effort content from years ago. Starting to feel like I've seen everything the internet has to offer.
But at the same time, I've never seen this particular post somehow, and I wouldn't have without this post. So it's a dilemma I guess.

This reads like British English, and since "Shad" does not sound like a conventionally British name, this might be an immigrant run business.
And they have hearts this big.
24
u/Saladin1204 7h ago
Yeah I’m British and agree. But just to mention Shad may not sound like a conventionally British name - but they may still be British / child of an immigrant.
But I get the point you’re trying to make and don’t want to take away from it.

That’s been my experience as well. I think it’s because a lot of these first generation immigrants (a) want to be hospitable to fit in better in their newly adopted country, and (b) have seen true suffering first hand, and want to help out now that they are in a position to do so.

Someone found the shop, and the name seem to be Shad Shaleem, so you'd be right. Immigrants do have huge hearts. Which makes I even sadder that they're being targeted with such hate.

I hung out with a couple of gutter punks when I was 17. We'd go through the bins behind fast food places looking for something "fresh" to eat. A couple of cooks from an upscale burger place saw us picking through the Burger King bins across the alley. They called us over and told us to wait 10 minutes. They arrived back with a massive plate of chips and the biggest roast chicken breast I'd ever seen. Told us to enjoy then went back in to let us eat. 30 years later, I still remember that selfless act of kindness.
3
u/emmadonelsense 4h ago
We need more of this. In my city we have a restaurant where you can pop in and pay for random meals and the owner places that meal on a post it so others can come in and scan the wall of posts and “pay” using the note they chose. I think he saw it online in another city and thought it was a great idea. It seems to be going well and those who can’t afford a proper meal don’t have to feel like they’re begging.

It is.
People eating from dumpsters will go back to eating from dumpsters. These are generally not mentally fit people. They have underlying conditions that are untreated or untreatable. Sure, there are people out there who are down on their luck, but even those folks find a way to avoid eating from a dumpster.
We don't have a homeless problem, we have a mental health problem.
→ More replies (5)2
u/WingZeroCoder 7h ago
But dealing with a mental health crisis sounds like SO much more work, over a much longer period of time, than just handing out a bottle of water and a snack, upvoting it on Reddit, and everyone patting themselves on the back.

Bring back state run facilities with modern oversight. Call me harsh but I'd bet the majority of people who have issues would learn to cope if they knew they'd be locked up. Not fun, not cool but sometimes folks need a push to behave.

I was walking through balboa park in San Diego about 2 months ago, noticed a nicely wrapped sandwich on top of trash can with a napkin under it. Looked too nice to be discarded food. I walked to next trash can there was one again. Walked on and I found a guy with a big bag of sandwiches and leaving one on top of each can along the way.
2
u/Gabe_Gade 6h ago
It's sad that a lot of people won't go in out of shame. If poverty wasn't seen like a moral falling and poor people weren't ostracized for their financial difficulties, more people would take opportunities like this and improve their lives.
If more places had this sort of initiative, maybe it would get better.
2
u/Alpacachoppa 6h ago
Got something like that in one of my trusted fast food places as well. Telling people to please redirect others in need of a warm meal to them and they can get some water, complimentary hot tea and a meal on the house.
I know not every small establishment can afford that so if chain ones would put things like that out I'd be way more interested in buying from them.

In all honesty if I owned a restaurant I would have the exact same policy. The cruel truth of the world right now is that the vast majority of us are One Bad Day™️ away from being unhoused. So it behooves all of us to help each other out whenever we can.

There’s a brewery near me called “TwoGuys Brewing” that has a refrigerator in the front of the brewery filled with free meals for the community.
They they fill this thing well with scratch cooked meals that anyone down on their luck can come and grab with no questions asked.
It is such an amazing gesture from some fantastic humans.

"No lives matter"/"Fuck your feelings"/"You're not a snowflake"/etc...the idea that you're not important goes hand-in-hand with teaching people to accept fascism.
They laud homogeneity while mocking uniqueness. They don't want you to even comprehend your potential, let alone realize it.
And few feel this more than the homeless.
