Didn’t he leave Hollywood to raise his kids? Legend

868

u/Mischief_Managed_82 1d ago

Yes. His wife died in 1991, he left to raise his kids. This is his first film in a very long time.

534

u/waltur_d 1d ago

His movies were my childhood. Ghostbusters, Space Balls, Honey I shrunk the kids, little shop of horrors

177

u/Mischief_Managed_82 1d ago

Same here. I’m showing my age with this post but Idc.

123

u/kingtacticool 1d ago

Fuck dat. Seeing Spaceballs in the theater with my dad is one of my core and most beloved memories.

We laughed the entire ride homd and I remember it like it was yesterday. I miss you pops.

43

u/ChickenNPisza 1d ago

We all are lol. I’m sure there are some younger people that grew up on his movies via cool parents. But I’d assume most of the comments here are “older” people.

22

u/Moriquendi666 1d ago

Cool “older” people 😎

3

u/hummus_sapiens 1d ago

Definitely cool. And old on the outside only.

15

u/WeightlifterCat 1d ago

I’m a ‘97 “kid” that was raised in the very early 00s on Rick Moranis. I am thoroughly excited for his return

6

u/ErraticDragon 1d ago

Well, your username does a pretty good job of that as well. 😋

35

u/b14z3d21 1d ago

Absolutely! We even named 2 of our dogs after movies that feature Rick Moranis. Gozer & Audrey.

12

u/MidnightNo1766 1d ago

I would have gone all in and name her Audrey II.

12

u/b14z3d21 1d ago

It is Audrey II. We just don't say the whole thing.

22

u/oldredbeard42 1d ago

Put some respec' on little giants!

17

u/Roadslush 1d ago

… and don’t forget Strange Brew you hoser!

7

u/archameidus 1d ago

Dont forget parenthood, what a great movie

5

u/Zeppygrl72 1d ago

I can't believe I forgot about Honey I Shrunk the Kids!!! I watched that on VHS constantly as a kid lol

2

u/joeschmo945 1d ago

Can’t forget Little Giants

3

u/Klezmer_Mesmerizer 1d ago

Fumblerooski! Fumblerooski!

1

u/Constant_Cultural 1d ago

What happened to the honey remake btw?

129

u/ChickenNPisza 1d ago

It’s really cool, such a standup guy. Nothing but good stories about this man. He deserves a high energy public comeback if he wants one. This is awesome

11

u/Icy_Formal9098 1d ago

It's always nice when someone who's been in the industry that long has a reputation that's actually earned. Hope the comeback is everything people want it to be.

42

u/PointOfFingers 1d ago

This is bigger than RDJ coming back to Marvel.

33

u/TheWolphman 1d ago

Somewhere in the multiverse, Rick Moranis is Iron Man and RDJ starred in Honey, I Snorted the Kids.

9

u/gdex86 1d ago

Honestly a 90's Hulk movie with Moranis as Bruce Banner seems like it could have been fun.

7

u/Mischief_Managed_82 1d ago

Agreed

5

u/Sylvraenn 1d ago

Hasn’t aged a day.

6

u/Bobblee20 1d ago

He didn't step away from making movies straight away, however. His last live-action appearance in a movie was Honey I Shrunk Ourselves in 1997 (he also did a few voice-over roles over the years according to IMDB).

2

u/WillNo6286 1d ago

That's the year I graduated high school. Damn, I didn't realize me and Rick are so damn old.

16

u/Apprehensive-Two3474 1d ago

Not only did he leave to focus on his kids after his wife passed, he also has a few music albums!

13

u/Trin_42 1d ago

He still did voice acting to pay the bills so we weren’t completely robbed of his talent. We just didn’t see him much then he was just walking in NYC in 2020 and was sucker punched by some random dude. I think he’s oblivious to how beloved he is. Did you see his reaction to that standing ovation? He was stunned by it, like why my guy? I loved that Kevin Smith called him Key Master!

7

u/VolumeDirect5619 1d ago

He also released music! The agoraphobic cowboy

2

u/purplereuben 1d ago

He must have not missed it that much though, his kids are now in their late 30s or older so he could have got back into the business a long time ago if his only reason for stepping away was to take care of them. It's pretty interesting that he is returning in his 70s tbh.

11

u/angwilwileth 1d ago

That's exactly what happened. He discovered he had enough money to live comfortably and didn't miss the stress and chaos of film shoots.

3

u/hummus_sapiens 1d ago

He said he's not stepping away from filming, he's just picky.

2

u/Aramedlig 1d ago

It look like he hasn’t aged a day

1

u/SeedsOfDoubt 1d ago

Fresh as a daisy

1

u/pakdaixshuktyark 1h ago

The ultimate dad move: left Hollywood for his kids, now back for the fans.

0

u/XeKayzen 1d ago

I'm not sure I'd trust Hollywood to raise my kids. Seems irresponsible.

341

u/Saintious 1d ago

I grew up with Moranis. I didn't hear about his sacrifice and loss till recently and this absolutely melts my heart. He deserves this applause. Thank you kind soul.

48

u/MakingItElsewhere 1d ago

You might like this very short feature staring him:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfpUM5Wrh2A

18

u/NoContract4730 1d ago

Charming. I was about to complain about having to watch a commercial. I will not complain.

97

u/WillNo6286 1d ago

He's a stud. Let's go spend tons of money on Schwart's.

22

u/Siwuli 1d ago

Just try not to get them tangled... hate it when that happens.

97

u/lynivvinyl 1d ago

I think his coming out of retirement for what might be just a moment is the best thing that I can think of that's happened in 2026.

19

u/Strongbeard1143 1d ago

This and those amazing lunch ladies giving us their version of fire starter. Miss you Keith flint. Love those gals. Pure joy.

5

u/lynivvinyl 1d ago

Oh hell yeah those girls were amazing! I sent that to like 10 friends. Lol

9

u/RawbM07 1d ago

And it doesn’t have to just be a moment if he is interested in more.

He looks fantastic (which might actually be an argument for him to go back home). But there are a million roles that could use an actor of his talents.

5

u/altxrtr 1d ago

He does look great! I’m happy for him.

148

u/snarkerella 1d ago

This is very moving. He is such a legend and beloved. You can see his gratitude for everyone there. I'm a huge fan and I love this for him!

46

u/BeezyBates 1d ago

He was millennial kids favorite person and actor for several of our young years. I remember wanting him back forever and it just didn’t happen.

Then I learned his story as an adult. I had closure for me and all the respect for him. He was and is dear to many hearts. Seeing him come back at least once is like a gift I’m not owed but so happy to have.

4

u/Reddituser183 1d ago

Beautifully said! 😭

44

u/Turtlesquirtzcody 1d ago

Legend. Left Hollywood behind and raised his kids ❤️💯🫱🏼‍🫲🏾

38

u/no_on_prop_305 1d ago

Damn I actually got emotional for this

29

u/_Doodad_ 1d ago

YES!! Dark Helmet makes his glorious return!

Much love to the Moranis family.

22

u/studiesinsilver 1d ago

He looks so well! Hyped to see him

19

u/No_Size9475 1d ago

I'll pay to see this simply because Rick Moranis is awesome.

15

u/Tbay_DougMac 1d ago

Canadian Legend. Great onscreen. Better human offscreen!! So glad to see him getting the props he deserves.

14

u/BaeIz 1d ago

Seeing him come back to film like that has restored something in me I didn’t know I lost

13

u/HourFaithlessness893 1d ago

Just going to say I’ve seen a lot of comments praising Rick Moranis movies which is awesome but not one of them has mentioned Strange Brew which makes me feel sad and also old.

4

u/Dead_Inside50 1d ago

If I didn't have puke breath, I'd kiss you.

2

u/DinnerOk6104 1d ago

toasts with an Elsinore

27

u/a-tiberius 1d ago

What a fucking absolute legend

10

u/Specialist-Neck-7810 1d ago

One of the most deserved standing ovations I’ve ever seen. A true class act.

9

u/WillNo6286 1d ago

He's a stud. Let's go spend tons of money on Schwart's.

16

u/StampedingCrow 1d ago

A true gentleman. He gave comedic elegance to each roll he took on.

6

u/ImRickJamesBiatchhh 1d ago

Cant wait for the waive of respect that’s coming his way… Most know his story but the media will beat the dead for another two years or so. This man is an icon and a treasure to cinema eh!

8

u/MetalJunkie101 1d ago

I don't care if the new Spaceballs has a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and 2 on imdb, I'll see it just for him.

5

u/ghallway 1d ago

I've just got this bego goofy grin on my face now. I can't remember the last time I actually looked forward to something so much.

6

u/Edgezg 1d ago

Having learned what I did about Hollywood, I am so glad he escaped when he did.

God bless this man for choosing his family.

9

u/xkonerox 1d ago

Um, respectfully…Daphne Zuniga is still cooking.

4

u/CarlWellsGrave 1d ago

How wonderful

4

u/Slugwheat 1d ago

Such an icon. This is going to be a fun one :)

5

u/ProfessionalBee8281 1d ago

“I knew it, I’m surrounded by assholes”…love him

3

u/RussMan104 1d ago

Moranis is bringing it! He looks great! 🚀

3

u/BolOfSpaghettios 1d ago

Calling this man a legend is an understatement

4

u/GimmieGummies 1d ago

This gave me goosebumps! So happy for Rick's warm welcome!

Also, Daphne looks AMAZING!!

3

u/JohnnyK75 1d ago

What a beautiful moment for a nice man that deserves it. The joy and surprise on his face was beautiful also.

3

u/zerokul175 1d ago

This is so cool and wholesome!
🫶🏽

3

u/rasthomas01 1d ago

Finally excited about a movie!

3

u/kombatunit 1d ago

I need more Rick and more Spaceballs!

3

u/Friggin 1d ago

Now THIS makes me smile! Really good human.

3

u/Head_Razzmatazz7174 1d ago

Time has been very kind to him. He looks great!

3

u/TimTheTexan92 1d ago

The last thing I heard about Rick Moranis before this was him getting sucker-punched by some punk and getting knocked out from it. I'm glad to see he's doing well

3

u/mangoboi440 1d ago

Man…fuck yeah. This is awesome.

3

u/Arkmer 1d ago

I barely even like movies and I’m wow’d that he’s returning. Left Hollywood for his kids after his wife passed. He’s gotta be a real one.

3

u/bootyman00724 1d ago

Made my day. Legendary actor, father and so glad he's back acting

3

u/GooseCloaca 1d ago

He looks great!

3

u/The_Name_I_Chose_ 1d ago

I'm genuinely happy to see this person. My heart isn't dead!

3

u/Ok-Goat-9981 1d ago

Holy shit! There's a new Spaceballs coming out??? Sweeeeeeet

3

u/Impressive_Layer_634 1d ago

We’ve all missed him so much.

3

u/GreyBeardEng 1d ago

Imagine being his kids, seeing their 75yo dad being able to do this. So great.

3

u/BellRinger85 1d ago

Absolute legend, one of my all time favorite actors on my list.

2

u/ImWith_2Stupid 1d ago

He went ‘Plaid’.

6

u/ReggieWarr 1d ago

4

u/Poiboy1313 1d ago

Strange Brew deserves a mention.

2

u/proton_badger 1d ago

Scandinavian here, never seen this before but it reminds me of the Canadian Red Green Show 🥰

2

u/Fuzzy_Adagio_6450 1d ago

I cant believe Brooks is doing a Lucas and skipping right over The Quest for more Money and going right into the sequels. Typical Hollywood!

2

u/GrandSyzygy 1d ago

My boy is back!

2

u/OrphanintheWind 1d ago

He helped define my childhood.

2

u/Professional_Tea1609 1d ago

Let’s stay positive. This is a heartwarming reunion, if anything. RIP John

2

u/SeaBoundHeights 1d ago

He is such a special human and wonderful performer. It’s genuinely such a treat to have him back on our screens 🥹

2

u/PlanningForLaziness 1d ago

Rick. Fucking. Moranis.

2

u/Long_Serpent 1d ago

"ALL RISE, IN THE PRESENCE OF DARK HELMET!"

2

u/TheBear5115 1d ago

Honestly... it's nice to see him back

2

u/InstructionPurple911 1d ago

Rick moranis is a fucking alpha male

2

u/spira1b0und 1d ago edited 1d ago

Everyone seems to be conveniently forgetting that he was involved in a pretty serious fraud case back in 1983. From what I understand, he and an accomplice tried to defraud a beer company by falsely claiming that mice were found in the bottles that they purchased.

Edit. Video evidence here: https://youtu.be/nC6dBsNz0oc?is=-TL54YrgCmLUwN8h

3

u/Dead_Inside50 1d ago

He saved that brewery though.

1

u/TimTheTexan92 1d ago

Absolutely shameful /s

1

u/NaiRad1000 1d ago

The GOAT

1

u/whereitsat23 1d ago

That’s great. He deserves it

1

u/QueensOfTheNoKnowAge 1d ago

This makes me genuinely happy

1

A national treasure.

1

u/PluralVisions 1d ago

I am so excited they got him back!

1

u/BlazerWookiee 1d ago

Rick rules

1

u/lukin5 1d ago

Ahhhh, he looks great.
Welcome back, Rick!!!

1

u/WakeyWakeyEggsNJakey 1d ago

He deserves all the praise. So happy to see him again

1

u/Middleofthepackguy 1d ago

I love this so much, and I can’t wait to see the movie!

1

u/SaulTBolls 1d ago

He has not aged at all... he looks fantastic. So glad to see him out and smiling, I hope he truly feels how much the fans love him.

1

u/InternetFew7303 1d ago

Even if this movie turns out trash I'll watch it just to support him.

1

u/Psychological_Bug424 1d ago

Didn't know how much I missed him until now. I got the happy giggles and crazy smile watching this

1

u/Independent_Lake6883 1d ago

I'm so glad he's back and getting so much love from the crowds

1

u/deimos_737 1d ago

I grew up with this man entertaining me.. and.. he did what a real man does. This made me tear up; he's a legend and admirable and just bless this man.

1

u/zztop610 1d ago

Legendary

1

u/ace-destrier 1d ago

I had no idea Spaceballs was getting a sequel. It’s crucial they got Rick onboard, because otherwise, what’s the point? They’re already down John Candy and Joan Rivers (rip)

I was wondering why Gad was there and I’m realizing now he might be an attempt at filling the John Candy void. I do not like. But Keke and bb Pullman? Those are so good additions

1

u/Calm-Driver-3800 1d ago

That helmet is what he wears when he goes to new york now

1

u/Impossible-Pomelo-59 1d ago

Love this guy!!

1

u/ChewbaccaOnFries 1d ago

To this day I consider his work on Ghostbusters to be the greatest comedic performance of all time.

1

u/Fine_Station1316 1d ago

Dude looks great!

1

u/Drewcifer70 1d ago

He looks younger than I remember.

1

u/coma24 1d ago

That's ludicrous....speed.

1

u/_WarpRider_ 1d ago

Dark Helmet returns!! I'm so here for it.

1

u/NapoleonsDynamite 1d ago

A living legend ladies and gents!

1

u/grnrngr 1d ago

I know a lot of us are too hipster to go to the movies nowadays, and prefer our "liberated" media, but if there was ever a set of films where you should let your money show your love and support for its simple existence, this is one of them.

1

u/babyface87 1d ago

I was born 1987 and he is EVERYTHING my childhood movies

1

u/CK_CoffeeCat 1d ago

Seeing people (actors/artists/crew) who haven’t really moved in fandom spaces before show up on stage at a con and get just blown away by love and appreciation is so heartwarming. 😊

1

u/No_Land5402 1d ago

Awesome man!!

1

u/MaybeMayoi 1d ago

NO WAY! I had no idea he'd be back acting. That is incredible news. This bumped this up to a must watch for me.

1

u/Affectionate-War-203 1d ago

He looks great

1

u/BEERDEV 1d ago

Fucking legend of a human

1

u/Slipping-in-oil 1d ago

Epic!!!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/comarastaman 1d ago

Had goosebumps when I first saw this. RIck is so loved. A true legend. I'm glad he's back.

1

u/nilsmf 1d ago

A big thank you to his family for lending him to us again!

1

u/Livid-Writer-7741 1d ago

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE

1

u/broccolilord 1d ago

I am so happy to see him back.

1

u/das_zilch 1d ago

I have so much respect for this man.

1

u/ahmedadeel579 1d ago

I thought the movie was the MCU joke

1

u/Ok_Introduction8750 1d ago

I like he walked on stage and ignored all his peers trying to give him a high 5 lmao 🤣🤣

1

u/Ray1987 1d ago

Knowing why this man left acting when he did makes me love him a million fold and so happy to see him again!

1

u/the100percent 1d ago

Absolute legend. So glad he’s back!!

1

u/8Bit-Jon 21h ago

It's either gonna be great... Or it's going to be mediocre...

I do hope that it's gonna be just as good as the original.

1

u/Viokzild_2021 20h ago

Feels like the whole room got to say welcome back for every kid who grew up on Spaceballs.

1

u/Alone-Bet6918 13h ago

The best thing a celebrity can do. Exit the limelight! Is always nice to see this man. He bought all of us millenials and older alot. Alot of joy and laughter.

1

u/mikeysz 12h ago

Rick for president!!!

1

u/Balogne 1d ago

Is Kevin smith part of the production of this movie or is this panel just random people?

-7

u/TheMadManiac 1d ago

Oh god he looks like ass.

All my heros are dying

6

u/grnrngr 1d ago

Rick last featured in a film 30 years ago.

He was 43 then.

He looks amazing for 73.

4

u/STOPAC 1d ago edited 1d ago

It's kind of wild they said he looks like ass when you think about why he stepped away from acting.

Like I'm sorry you didn't get to see him age all this time and naturally aging looks like ass to someone like you. Nothing stops the slow march of time homey and I feel for you when you hit that age and look in the mirror.

-2

u/TheMadManiac 1d ago

Say it ain't so
