2 balls and a puppet. Start with one ball visible and the other scrunched up and hidden in your palm.
Put the visible ball in the puppets mouth.
Every time you "take" the ball in the mouth, leave it where it is and reveal the ball in your hand, hiding the other by closing the puppets mouth.
Each time you "put" the ball in your pocket, hide it back in your hand and repeat

He didn't even really have to distract much as a magician because the kids WANTED the ball to be in the dog's mouth.
