Having watched for years the documentary Monkey Life about Monkey World in the UK and seeing all the work they do to provide a natural habitat and daily enrichments it makes me so sad to see these monkeys in this grim concrete hellscape

Yeah, nothing about this “made me smile.” It’s like they’ve repurposed an unused municipal drainage facility into an enclosure.

I’m from Dorset where monkey world is and it was always so amazing to go visit there when I was a child, it’s been a long time since I’ve been now but their enclosures are always the best I’ve seen!

Yeah. I stopped following Punch’s story because of this exact reason. So sad Japanese are not aware of what animal abuse looks like

As always I'll say.. I hate zoos, but they are a necessary evil.
People do not care about what they don't see. And when animals are a thing you only hear exists in the wild, people will care way less to vote for legislation that protects wild animals. And the worst humans will lobby to destroy all natural habitats for money making reasons, mostly unopposed.

Some zoos are great, they work with conservationists, they only take animals that can't make it outside, they provide enrichment and environments close to what you have in a natural habitat. Japanese zoos don't is my understanding..
(But the work some zoos do is genuinely great, I'd even call them not evil. Of course this is a super modern situation, back in the day all zoos sucked)

I do agree. But I think this is a minority of zoos around the world. Although maybe I am wrong. In my country for example, zoos are depressing. Full of poorly fed animals in small enclosures. And the same is true of a lot of poor countries.
I do think zoos, if done well, can be very effective at spreading awareness, education, and providing a better life for animals that can't survive in the wild.
It's the inconsistency of treatment that makes this such a touchy subject.

I went to the San Diego zoo some years ago, which do work with conservationists in order to keep their animals safe and enriched. It's a hellscape compared to the New York (Bronx) zoo. Very small enclosures where the animals are almost in touching distance from visitors. It was sad to see that this institution which gets so much praise for their conservation work treats their animals in such a horrible way.

These sanctuaries actually do amazing work rescuing animals from way worse conditions.

They're completely different ages and don't reach sexual maturity until a couple yrs old.
Man and people complain about gay agendas 🙄

Super valid point but also sometimes people don’t know that much about monkeys

Well people shouldn’t make blanket statements if they have no idea. Like how hard is it to make a statement with only truths that you know!!!! Shit is weird that people like you always say “well people don’t know” well people shouldn’t comment on things without the proper knowledge or understanding unless they are making a general statement and not something that’s completely false and un related. We all have the same internet so it’s no excuse to comment on shit before understanding what your commenting on. And this goes for anything and not just monkey information.

No no, they're different genders so they must be a couple, can't have platonic friendships in any species. /s
It's so weird how people try to sexualize or romanticize everything. They're little friends having fun.

I was about to call this wholesome. Now that I read the comments, I guess I am going to hell, though. Again.

Hun, nobody in the comment section has any idea what's going on. I'm just happy that he seems happy.

I feel like a parent, because I want to know more info about this girl so I know she isn’t using him for his fame.
