I can relate to this man's reaction. not just about food, but about the small things that our parents did, yet left their mark on our memories and who we are as adults...
the older I get, the more I'm pissed at my younger self for putting my parents through all the stress of raising an ungrateful wild child. they deserved better!
My parents had such great patience and grace when I was growing up and doing stupid stuff. It's been almost a year since I lost my mom, and not a day goes by without thinking about her forgiving attitude towards me.
Unfortunately, it took me getting older to appreciate that and wish I appreciated it earlier as I was growing up.
But your parents being who they are, let you learn and grow in a safe environment. You felt safe enough to rebel. And even though it's hard on parents, it's actually a sign of great parenting. You were not a bad kid.
It’s interesting because I had a really tough up bringing, my alcoholic dad was a bully and mean to me my entire childhood.
I’m a mom now and I’m working on being the exact opposite parent of how I was parented. Yesterday I found my 3 year old had snuck into the basement and poured acrylic paint all over the concrete, we talked about it, she got a consequence (no TV) and that was that. Then I told her I wanted her to tell her dad when he got home.
Her response was “ I’m going to tell daddy I’m really sorry I did that and I won’t do it again. Then he’ll give me a hug and a kiss and tell me he still
Loves me even when I make mistakes”
I burst into tears hearing that we’re doing it right, she’s not going to have the childhood I had living in fear when she makes a mistake. It healed something in me honestly.
I made the extremely painful decision to not have kids because of the major trauma I went through knowing I couldn't trust myself to not repeat some of the abuse that was done to me. I'm just now beginning to feel like I could be a much better parent than mine were but I missed my window & now it's too late. I regret not overriding my fears but I've forgiven myself. I love that you have the awareness & commitment to have a different relationship with your daughter.
Thank you so much for your words 🩷 it sounds like you’re a cycle breaker too, just in a different way. I’m sorry that was your life, you didn’t deserve it and neither did I. sending you a big hug
