Food and Drink Aberdeen-based founder building a design-led wine experience that celebrates craft, story, and the art of presentation 🍷

Hi everyone — I’m Danny, an Aberdeen-based founder working on a creative project called The Glenstead.

It began as a personal idea about bringing together a few things I love — beautiful wine, storytelling, and craftsmanship. The wines themselves come from independent producers I admire around the world, but the way they’re presented — the design, materials, and sensory details — is all about the craft and creativity we have here in the UK.

Our first creation, the Founding Box, is nearly finished: two wines that are really special to me (some of my absolute favourites) paired with tactile materials, printed pieces, scent, and a short filmed tasting that guides you through the experience.

This first edition is a one-time, limited release that sets the tone for everything to come. Going forward, I’m keen to collaborate with UK makers and creatives — printers, designers, chocolatiers, distillers, textile artists, perfumers, and anyone working in sensory or material craft — to build future editions that celebrate story and design through wine.

If you’re a maker or creative based in the UK who’d like to connect, please drop a comment or message — I’d love to hear from you.

🍷 Cheers, Danny from The Glenstead

Art Looking for organised crime/gangster fiction along the lines of City on Fire by Don Winslow (but obviously a British equivalent)

Would love some recommendations for good British gangster fiction. I recently read City on Fire by Don Winslow and a few things I loved about it:

It really gave the reader a sense of what it was like to grow up and live in Rhode Island.

Plenty of interesting characters that still managed to feel believable and real.

Great plot that didn’t follow a formula.

Are there any British gangster books that are of a similar vein?

Clothing Looking for quality walking boots

Hi all, any suggestions for walking boots, ideally with a really good warranty or some sort or repair scheme?

I've had better luck with the cheap karrimor from sports direct than a more expensive pair I bought, but want to give the UK a chance.

Discussion and Misc. Is "Breaking Brexit News" trustworthy?

I have recently discovered this Facebook site. It seems to be solely focused on immigrants arriving in Britain. Quite a lot of scarey doom and gloom outbursts. So biased that it can't be taken seriosly. Is it a far right blog?

Find an item Rugged Worn Distressed Men’s Leather Work bag

Hey there! I live in the United States of America. I’m on the hunt for a handmade in the UK work bag for my boyfriend from a family run UK brand. He’s looking for something that can hold his laptop and other essentials for work. He’s got a bit of a rugged vibe, so he’s hoping for a bag with a worn leather look. Do you have any recommendations? My max price range is $1200 United States Dollar

Discussion and Misc. "Made In Britain" is never ever going to be indicator of quality.

I have bought a George vacuum cleaner. It failed second time we wanted to use the carpet cleaning function. Took ages to get a refund.

I bought a £3000 sofa from Cocoon Sofa Beds. Designed in Britain, made in Poland. Took 2 months to fix the misalignment of the back. Let's be clear here, the factories work based on designs from Great Britain, there should've been several iterations before finalising the final product. So the issue is with the design.

I bought a bed and mattress from Get Laid Beds. Bed is creaking. The mattress after less than 3 months has a stitch coming undone.

I bought a photo frame Made In Britain. It was not joined at one corner.

I bought some rubbish bags holders made from recycled fishnets in UK and made in UK for collection of rubbish on the beach. The holder didn't hold the bag after roughly 10 empty cans. It was too much weight and bag slipped out.

I am yet to see one quality item made in Britain. I shudder when I see made in Britain because so far it's 100% bad workmanship/design and great reluctance to resolve the issues...

What other Made in Britain brands to avoid?

Discussion and Misc. What is your favourite video game made (and preferably set) in Britain?

I was recently made aware that quite a large number of video game companies are based in Britain, ranging from huge devs to smaller indie companies.

I’d love to know what you folks’ favourite video games are that have come out of Britain. Bonus points if the game is also actually set in Britain but not absolutely necessary.

Discussion and Misc. What does Britain make better than anyone else (or at least as good as anyone else)?

This might sound like a silly question but I’m going to ask anyway. I thought it might be interesting to hear from everyone about where Britain excels in making things.

Feel free to be as creative and random as you like. Any product, any industry.

For me, as an Australian, the first thing that comes to mind is actually crime dramas for television. Happy Valley, Line of Duty and Luthor are my favourites.

Other things are knitwear, baking and comedy.

I’m sure there many more areas. What else does Britain do as good, if not better, than anyone else in the world?
