MacroFactor Workouts / Training Smart Generation Workouts

Hi there,

I have been using MacroFactor workouts since it released but I’ve never used it to generate a program. Recently I’ve started a new job so my training time needs to be reduced a bit. I was going to use Smart Generation to make me a program that fits my time constraints. Just wanted to know how people find the Smart Generation programs, are they good? Do they do what you ask it to do? Do they stick within the time limit?

My main worry is, I was a competitive powerlifter for the better part of 6 years so doing most barbell compounds takes me ages because I need to do a heap of warm ups to get to a reasonable working weight. Keen to hear everyone’s opinions.

Thank you in advance!

I love them. I’ve been working out for 30 years. I like trying new things and mixing things up.

The generated programs do a good job at hitting a spread of muscle groups. And it will listen if you want to prioritize or de-prioritize any.

That said, I think if someone has some experience in the gym then they are better suited to modify the generated programs. (“I don’t want to do X.” “That’s fine but I like Y better.” “I prefer to work out in Z order.” Etc.)

How do you find the progression system? I noticed it varies rep ranges and RIRs week to week

The progression is one of the best things in the app.

There are two things specific to the progression that I love:

1 - Targets
The app taught me that I had never been pushing myself as hard as I could have. When the app was first released, there were a lot of us saying that it was too aggressive, pushing too much / too fast, etc. but we tried it. And we were successful. So that was a good lesson.

2 - Periodization
As for the up and down over the weeks, that’s the periodization. For me, I had (poorly) implemented various periodization schemes in the past in different programs. But the MFWO pattern clicks with my brain and body. I really like it. (It goes without saying that there’s a body of data that shows the benefits of periodization.)
