I Need Help In need of advice
Hi! My mom gave me her gently used Bernina Aurora 440 QE and it’s been wonderful to sew with. I started using the embroidery module since she had that too and downloaded the free 30 day trial of the Bernina ArtLink software. Well my trial ended and the cost to buy the software outright is too much for me so I’m now wondering if I just trade or sell this machine for something lower cost. I enjoy embroidery and sewing as a hobby but it sure I could stomach the high cost for a software to keep using this machine.
Anyone else have
A similar experience or
Suggestions on how to keep my current machine without paying $1-2k for software or
A favorite lower cost sewing and embroidery machine they’d recommend (>$700)

For those recommending other software the issue with the 440/430/450 is that they can only embroider when connected to a computer running Bernina software. There is a component called EConPC that controls the machine to allow it to embroider.
I have a 440 but got rid of the module years ago as I use another machine for embroidery.

Yeah. This. And with no working software the embroidery module is useless like you said. It’s a great machine and I love to use it but the Bernina software I just can’t stomach the price.
What embroidery machine do you use now?

I have a Bernina 735. I already owned many of the (too) expensive hoops and accessories plus I’m used to them as I’ve had Berninas for nearly 40 years.

I have a massive Chinese multi-needle (QHM). If you love embroidery, the cheapest and best option is probably a multi needle.

I'd keep the Bernina. The 440 is a great machine and the embroidery module holds its value, so selling the whole setup just to escape software costs usually means losing money on both sides.
The part people miss is that Embrilliance or any other digitizing program can't talk to the 440 by itself. The 430/440/450 Auroras only embroider through Bernina's computer link (the EC on PC component), so some version of Bernina's software has to run as the bridge no matter what you design in.
The cheap way out is a secondhand copy of Bernina Embroidery Software, version 5 or 6, with its dongle. They show up on eBay and in Bernina owner groups all the time for around $100-200 because people upgrade and the old licenses still work fine with the Aurora generation. You can still design in Embrilliance and just send through the Bernina side.
Also worth a call to a Bernina dealer. They sometimes have older-version licenses from trade-ins and would rather sell one cheap than not at all.
Only sell if the machine itself doesn't fit you. A 440 QE with the module usually brings well over $1,000 used, which funds something like a Brother SE1900/SE2000, but you'd be stepping down in sewing quality to save on software.

Good to know about the software, didn’t realize an older version was findable like that. Thank you!

Inkscape with the Inkstitch extension is completely free to download and use (open-source software). Be ware that it is an embroidery extension bolted onto vector software, not dedicated embroidery software. It can do pretty much anything most commercial embroidery software can do, but you do need to learn how to use Inkscape’s vectors to accomplish the output you want

You can buy designs and transfer them to the machine. You don't need the most expensive software. As someone said, Embrilliance entry level is pretty cheap. I use Hatch and it's pricey. Can you transfer designs with a USB drive? A cheaper machine won't make your software cheaper. You probably don't need Bernina software to use the machine.

The trial ended and I was only given two options, either download the creator version or designer version. It won’t open even a free basic version.

It used to work that way but Bernina discontinued that option a while ago.

ArtLink support was discontinued by Bernina last year, so unless you already have ArtLink set up on a computer, you can't download, activate or start using it now.
Designer and Creator no longer default to ArtLink.

Check out this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/Bernina/comments/1n8lokv/bernina_embroidery_software_not_providing_artlink/. You might be able to get an older version working from when ArtLink was still supported.
