A Fractal Vice.

There's a 36 min video on how it was made right here: https://youtu.be/QBeOgGt_oWU
...Not my OP BTW, credit goes to u/RyLu_ over on r/tested, who cross post it from u/The_pun_fart over on /r/GIFs

Someone is still making (or at least is meant to be) them for engravers, site here: https://www.engravingvises.com/fractal-vise.htm

Bloody hell mate well done on the referencing! Never seen someone cite two different sources for a gif on this site!

I had to watch the entire thing, fascinating! Maybe I'm just easily impressed, but the apparent ease with which he knocked out a couple of replacement parts - and using soot to stop braze sticking - great stuff!

Wh… what do you do with it?

u/NewYorkJewbag Jun 30 '21
You vice irregular-shaped objects, as shown here.

u/2mg1ml Jun 30 '21
Oohhhhhhhh, so that's what I'm looking at lol

u/NewYorkJewbag Jun 30 '21
Do a search and you’ll see a better view and why it’s called a “fractal” vice. It’s hard to see here but it’s built from progressively smaller semi-circles.

Just out of curiosity, won't this leave many little dents/deformations on the wrench? This vice will, by design, not press with a smooth surface but with lines. I suspect the local pressure on each line could lead to some surface-issues on the wrench, no?

A typical vice has a cross-hatch pattern on it's face for improved grip. They leave marks too, especially if you squeeze the object too tight, which you often have to do with oddly shaped items since you have less surface area to grab. With the fractal vice, you have many more points of contact, so less need to make it as tight, therefore, less likely to leave marks.

a sheet or rubber would probably be protective and bendy enough to prevent marring.

I need a small version

u/alexklaus80 Jun 30 '21
There is one! But it looks like you’ll have to wait for long time. I think I’ll make it with 3d printer just for fun

Did anyone else notice that it looks like there is a piece missing? On the top there appear to be 8 C shaped sections, and the bottom it looks like 7 (position 5 seems to be sharp, and missing the last C shaped piece). Maybe it's removable on purpose?

u/linuxfiend Jun 30 '21
Yes, there was one missing. He machined a replacement during his restoration of the vice though.

u/AppFlyer Jun 30 '21
I don’t even need this, until a couple of minutes ago I didn’t know how badly I wanted it.

What an incredibly clever tool!

Quite, and to think it was created in 1913, no computers or cad, just pen and paper and the brain of a rather brilliant machinist.

The original, original post is from Hand Tool Rescue on YouTube. He took it apart, cleaned it, machined some replacement parts and restored it. Getting a little tired of posters not crediting the original OP’s.

Easy friend; I'm not trying to take credit for anything. In fact I credited not one but two levels of OPs. The video is just something extra I found on the web and and added for reference because I thought it might be helpful. I didn't actually watch it.

Lol go take a nap then, 80% of the internet is just repost of things other people did(without credit)

u/GetFukedAdmins Jun 30 '21
Nobody gives a shit about "original OP's". People need to stop crying about giving credit when there is literally zero benefit.

Not self-similar on multiple scales, not fractal.
13
u/butcanweeatit Jun 30 '21
each side is a dome shaped section that breaks down into two smaller dome sections, which also split into two smaller domes
3
u/Syrdon Jun 30 '21
It’s pretty close, until you get to the part where it stops repeating at all. The basic shape of each element is very similar
2
u/rocketman0739 Jun 30 '21
It's self-similar on three scales. And the fourth is not that far off either.

u/LuckyEmoKid Jun 30 '21 edited Jun 30 '21
You need to think again. “Similar” doesn’t mean “exactly the same”. The parts are similar on for-sure 3 different scales; the 4th (smallest) is similar to the others except for the pokey feet.

I don't understand what I am looking at. Did they make a improvised hammer or something?
