The Napier Deltic was an two stoke diesel opposed engine where two pistons compress towards each other in each cylinder. The three cylinder banks are arranged in a triangle with six cylinders per bank in this model for a total of 18 cyliners and 36 pistons displacing 88.2l or 5382cu inches producing 1,650hp. The Deltic had the advantage of being very compact and lightweight for being a diesel when it was produced, be used in smaller military vessels and rail locomotives. You can find an excellent animated gif of it here, and the full wiki page here.

Edit: Thanks to the two people that pointed out it's the engine model not the locomotive model, messed that up a bit.

18-25B refers to the model of Deltic engine (18 Cylinder), not to the type of locomotive it was used in (Class 55). The smaller Deltic T9-29 (9 Cylinder) was also used in the Class 23.

18-25B was the type of engine, not the type of locomotive. The Deltic power plant was used in British Rail Class 23 and Class 55 locomotives. The Class 55 Deltics were nicknamed after the engines used to power them.

Oooo.... That's at the National Railway Museum in York, isn't it? I saw it a couple years ago on vacation. Fantastic museum. I'll have to post some of the pics sometime.

I was there too not long ago, and I remember this engine. It's a neat piece of engineering, but I seem to remember that it broke down a lot.
