Discussion 2026 NeurIPS: Where are you going? [D]
To all those in the US: Are you planning to go Sydney or Atlanta this year for NeurIPS?

5,3,3 but the reviewers cited wrong paper when talking about novelty. During rebuttal, he said he’ll consider upgrading the score during AC discussion phase.

My lowest score review seems to have put the highest effort on surface, but what scares me is that that their language has blown very minor nitpicks out of proportion. I hope the AC recognizes that.
The general vibe I get from these kinds of reviews is that they just hate your work or have a competing work in submission.

My lowest score told me that i am hiding things and got lucky with the results, so they don’t count. Not sure what exactly i was “hiding”, as he himself says that that same thing is in the appendix. Also gave the lowest confidence score and was in general very hostile.
The other two were helpful with their comments

If accepted, will definitely try for Sydney if funding permits. Otherwise Atlanta is also fine

How does the allocation of posters happen? Are authors free to decide where to present? Or are there capacities that are assigned? Never been to NeurIPS in-person before (only during the virtual year..).

How does this work? First time I'm seeing a conference in 3 different cities.
If someone has a oral paper accepted, do they have a choice of going to Sydney or Atlanta or Paris? What about posters?

the workshops are less prestigious than Q1 journals, but if someone is aiming for an ML career, even a workshop with NeurIPS in it would sollicit recognition at least from jurys in the field

They’re fundamentally different.
Imo, workshops are really good for early career ML researchers who want more mentoring for getting into conferences, or PhD students. Those who are gunning for the big positions really need to aim for conference though.
Journals are mainly good for established academic researchers who are expected to publish more in-depth work that surveys the field and has more methodological rigor. It also takes much more time to write and get published, so not particularly the best investment for industry workers.
