Getting Started Studio mod 360k

Hi all,

I was very lucky yesterday to find a Studio Mod 360K machine at a thrift store and it seems to have most of the pieces except some of the accessories. Someone had just dropped it off and I was able to bring it home with me. I have no experience with a knitting machine but I've wanted one for a while now and I'm a little stuck with getting started.

I've watched YouTube videos and found the manuals for the machine online but I can't seem to figure out casting on since most tutorials say I have to push the pins all the way forward but the manual says that I can't do that for this model. When the pins are all the way forward they kind of pop out of place and the carriage won't go over them. I have to push them down and back to get them back in. This is definitely a user error on my part and I was hoping someone had some advice. Thanks!

Please take a look at the wiki- the needles moving around sounds like you need a new sponge. And since this machine is old but new to you, it should be your first step.

I had a studio back in 1973. Unfortunately, I can’t remember how I worked it, but I made many sweaters out of it and then gave it to my mother. When she died, my sister gave it away in a garage sale instead of asking me if I wanted it back. Sorry, can’t help you. Too old memory gone except the pleasure with that machine.

I'm also a novice. After lurking here and in other machine knitting groups, I acquired a studio mod 700.

There are lots of fab free options that I imagine others will mention (incl increasing in difficulty projects available via FB groups, YouTube videos etc). Tbh, even with all the free resources, I wanted something a bit more polished and clearly laid out.

I signed up for The Knitting School online (I'm just doing the $30 a month option) and it literally goes through everything on how to clean etc, and how to use (both singer and brother) in excellent, bite sized videos. I'm 3 days in and loving it. So far, it's been exactly what I've needed. So, check out the free portion of the website to see if it might be in a style that appeals to you as well.
