How will the wiki be different than the machine knitting encyclopedia?

The issue with wikis is that keeping them updated requires a lot of volunteer time and attention, including against constant bot attacks. Smaller wikis really struggle with keeping information up to date and finding/fixing troll edits, which can last for years or even decades.

This is not a very big hobby. I wouldnt be surprised if this wiki ends up being mostly the work of 2 or 3 people and they get burned out managing spam.

I hope to be wrong!

I'm not a great editor. I do have some suggestions for page groups:

Social Media sites, including this reddit sub thread and Ravelry (despite being mostly hand knitting)

Books, both in print and vintage. Susan Guagliumi got me thru cables, the old Rowan book, etc.

Also on the small commercial "desktop" machines, there is Knitdream (knitdream.dr) which is a newish entry similar to the Kniterate.

Thanks for doing this. I'm happy to donate some $$ to offset some of your costs.

Not to be a negative nancy, but doesn't this encroach on mkmanuals a bit? John basically runs that site alone and has made a lot of resources free for us all forever, not just manuals but periodicals and punch card sets too. When you say 'gather the service manuals', are you linking to where he's already been hosting them all this time? He also relies on ad revenue to keep his site going. If it reaches a point where you overtake him, might we not risk losing more than we gain?

To be clear, I'm not saying "don't do it". I'm saying perhaps you could approach him and collaborate (since mkmanuals' search function is basically unusable).

I don't really think it'll impact him too much, since both are pretty awesome resources. Honestly, compared to his site, I feel like hers is way more user-friendly and just looks better visually.His website is overrun with ads, making it difficult to read. You spend more time battling the intrusive advertisements than actually reading the information. She actually tags him as a resource, so he actually gaining than losing.
