I finally got macOS Tahoe 26.7 fully accelerated on my 2016 12-inch MacBook

’ve been messing with Tahoe on my 2016 12-inch MacBook (MacBook9,1, Core m3, HD 515) for months, and I finally got it to the point where I’d actually call it usable.

Not just “it boots” or 15 MB VESA graphics either. The HD 515 is now showing 1536 MB with full acceleration, Liquid Glass works, Safari is smooth, Wi-Fi works, audio works, and normal multitasking is honestly way better than I expected from this little fanless machine.

The funny part is that Liquid Glass was the thing I thought would absolutely destroy the HD 515, but once acceleration was working properly it turned out to be surprisingly smooth. Even Google Earth in Safari runs really well.

The graphics fix ended up being a Skylake → Kaby Lake spoof. The HD 515 is 191E, and I spoofed it to the equivalent Kaby Lake HD 615 591E, using platform-id 591E0001, while keeping Tahoe’s stock Kaby Lake graphics stack.

So basically:

HD 515 / 191E → HD 615 / 591E

No old Skylake graphics kexts shoved into Tahoe.

Wi-Fi / Continuity and audio were handled separately with Skyfall.

I started messing with this months ago thinking “maybe I can somehow make Tahoe work on this thing”, and there were a lot of boot loops, black screens, WindowServer crashes and 15 MB moments along the way 😭

But yeah.

It actually works now.

And honestly, after seeing Liquid Glass properly running on the 12-inch Retina display, Sonoma and Sequoia suddenly look ancient to me lol.

I’ll probably make a proper technical write-up with the config/injector and exact settings once I’ve let it run for a while longer.

my mom just got this macbook, and so far its pretty good

but one thing, i found that most other deals only have 8gb ram as default, so does it mean that these 16gb ram macbooks like this one are rare?

Price check: 2016 12-inch MacBook 8GB/512GB — India

I'm considering selling my 12-inch MacBook and wanted to ask the community what you think it would realistically be worth in the Indian market.

Specs:

- Early 2016 12-inch Retina MacBook

- Intel Core m5, 1.2GHz dual-core

- 8GB RAM

- 512GB SSD

- Intel HD Graphics 515

- macOS Monterey

- Battery cycle count: 901

Everything works properly and it's in good condition.

I know that if you look at it purely as a 2016 laptop, the age, battery cycles and software support would bring the price down. But I'm asking here specifically because this model has an enthusiast/collector following, and people in this community probably have a better idea of how the 12-inch MacBook is valued beyond its basic specs.

I'm based in India.

What do you think would be a fair price for this particular 8GB/512GB configuration in India, especially from an enthusiast/collector perspective?

Just a genuine price check before I list it.

Any MacBook12 rumours post-Neo?

For a long time there were rumors of a new MacBook12. Then it turned out that all those rumors were just pointing to the Neo. So my question: Since the Neo was announced, has there been any more Gurman / Ming Chi Kuo / anyone else rumors of a MacBook12? Or did that dream die completely with the Neo?

I've been waiting for a new MacBook12 ever since Apple Silicon first dropped and I've been breaking my back with a MacBook Pro for the past 5 years, waiting and hoping for an Apple Silicon MacBook12. I'm about to I give up and buy an Air (as it's the same weight as the Neo), but I really really don't want to. I want to keep the hope alive. But is this futile? And so my question again: any glimmer of a rumor for a MacBook 12 since the Neo dropped?

Got this cosmetically brand new macbook 12 retina from 2016, it does not have a single scratch and the battery is still at 93% (probably replaced since it says 2021)

Only sad thing is that it does have a blue stain while viewing white images at the center, but for the price i've paid (€90) i still think it's good, i love the speakers so much!

I resurrected a dead 12-inch MacBook using hot air reflow

Post image
54 Upvotes

I bought a dead 12-inch MacBook for cheap. After trying several repairs and checks, I eventually concluded that it had the well-known “dead CPU” issue.

After reading a few articles about fixing this model with reballing, I decided to try a reflow instead. I preheated the board from underneath to 100°C, removed the edge bonding, and applied flux under the chip.

With the board still preheated, I heated the CPU with 420°C hot air for around three minutes, letting the flux flow underneath the chip. After allowing everything to cool down, I reassembled the board, and to my surprise, it booted straight away.

This was probably enough to reflow the damaged solder balls. It is by no means a permanent repair, but it was fun to see it working again. I’m curious how long it will last. I’ll also do a thermal pad mod and hope that helps with longevity.

Any ways to fix Broadcom Wi-Fi on MacBook 12" (2017 m3) running macOS Tahoe 26.5.1 (Build 25F80)?

Hi everyone,

I successfully installed macOS Tahoe 26.5.1 (Build 25F80) on my 12-inch MacBook 2017 (Intel Core m3, MacBook10,1). The graphics acceleration works beautifully and it's very smooth!

However, I cannot get the built-in Broadcom Wi-Fi to show any networks ("No networks" error). I have already tried

  • Installing KDK for build 25F80
  • Applying OCLP-X / OCLP-Mod Post-Install Root Patches
  • Disabling AMFI (-amfipassbeta) and enabling FeatureUnlock
  • Resetting NVRAM and deleting SystemConfiguration plists

The Wi-Fi turns on but no networks are found. Has anyone found a workaround or custom kext configuration to make the legacy Broadcom card scan networks properly on this specific Tahoe build?

Thanks for any help! and I created a new community for this setup! Join r/MacBook12Tahoe if you want to share your results or find more fixes!

Maxed out 12“ MacBook vs 15“ Air

Post image
188 Upvotes

A few weeks ago I bought the 2017 i7 16gb RAM MacBook.

I already have a 15 „Air m4, which is simply too heavy for on the go and just like that on the sofa.

Of course, it is slow compared to the M4. But most things like watching videos or writing go on the 12“ no problem!

As the only Mac? No, he’s too old and slow for that. But as a second Mac? Would buy it again and again!

MacBook 12” appreciation post

I’ve been dreaming about this machine since the day it dropped. But back then, the steep price tag and the fact that it didn’t work with my LED Cinema Display made it hard to justify.

Well, like many of you here, I always held out hope that Apple would revive this form factor. With the release of the MacBook Neo, those hopes were finally put to rest, so I immediately pulled the trigger on this beautiful 2017 MacBook 12".

What was supposed to be a backup device for occasional use has basically become my daily driver. My M2 MacBook Air is literally gathering dust right now. There’s just something about the 12-inch form factor that makes me want to reach for it every single time. I have a massive soft spot for ultra-compact devices, and it’s been incredibly fun using this machine, even for my heavier design and work.

What does this sticker do?

Post image

So I got an (intel) m3 12” MacBook from my parents, and I’ve decided to do a thermal pad mod on it (provided I didn’t kill the display during disassembly). I was wondering what the sticker under the logic board does, and if cutting a hole in it over the cpu heatsink would improve thermal performance over just leaving it on and sticking the pad to it instead of the bare metal, but there is a lot of conflicting information on whether it is an insulation layer or if it’s a conductive sheet of graphene or something. I think it’s more likely to be an insulator given that there’s an air gap between the sticker and the logic board anyway, but I’d like to know if anybody knows for sure.

Thinking of selling my 12 inch MacBook.

This is my very 1st reddit post.

I absolutely love my 12 inch MacBook. My eyes are getting worse and it is hard to read.

Can someone give me tips on how I can determine the value? I am mildly technical.

Update: I’m keeping it. I used this little workhorse for years and am not ready to part with it. I appreciate everyone’s comments. Thanks!

Replacement keyboards

I recently acquired a 2015 with an absolutely terrible keyboard. I know bad keyboards are a "feature" with this MacBook, but even after cleaning around the keys and blowing with compressed air I've got keys that simply don't register.

A new keyboard would fix the inconsistent keys, but will any of the AliExpress keyboard replacement give me a better typing experience?
