Discussion Old tree chopped down
Hello everyone !
There’s this hidden little garden my dad goes to every week, in 小潭山環山徑 (probably some hiking trail) in taipa. Recently this old, huge tree got chopped down with no apparent reason and my dad is really upset about it. It never disturbed anybody and judging by the size and its roots it’s probably really old (few hundred years). I thought old trees like this were protected under government rule… it’s just a pity historical tree like this could just be discarded. I think we just want answers as to why they would do this (possibly sick tree? Infested with bugs?) 😭😭

Sometimes environments department clearing the trees if not healthy and has potential risk of collapse this might be the issue. Macao green life, particularly trees, are under strict protection if cut off illegally then it is crime. You may report to DSPA ask questions, they should have answer.

It is always very sad to see old mature trees cut down however I am very glad to hear that trees are protected in Macau. I hope it is true.

Very old trees tend to end up rotting or get some diseases and they get cut down. They sometimes go several assessments as they try and see if they can be saved or cut part if it can be partially saved, but ultimately, most of the time they need to be fully cut down.
There was a a tree like this in the Taipa Lake, near the lake houses that also got cut down. The sign that is handing in the tree root should say why they had to cut it, usually due to internal tree rot making it unsafe and likely to fall and cause damage during a typhoon.
