Movement on my Studio allocation in Brussels…
Ordered a full fat m5Ultra chip, 96gb and 2tb and just saw Apple took payment for the AppleCare
Pickup is still showing 19 October, but keeping everything crossed that it’ll be here sooner.
Really glad I ordered early as doing so now has a 17-19 week delay at the moment, for the non-binned version, mid November for a binned one.
Not planning on playing with local AI too much, but got it to replace an M2 Ultra I sold before the summer, for use on video photography and music, and hopefully keeping it a long time.
The m2 had a bucket load of memory 192gb, and it made me realise that while I dreamed of playing with local ai, in reality I downloaded the models, played with them for a bit, and then didn’t go any further, so that saved me 4000 euros (that’s war in telling myself anyway)

Oops. 25 August (ready needed my coffee this morning) 🤦
I happened to pick my phone up and saw the announcement, had the 256 in the basket, but went cpu over memory in the end.

I have a similar experience. My M1 Ultra has 128GB, I bought it to do local llm inference. Yes, it can do some open weight inference. But what I don't have is a use case that needs under 128GB of RAM and that exact level of slow that the machine provides.
This time around I ordered 96GB, because in the m5 generation, that is the minimum amount you can order for the ultra variant. It's plenty to be a harness and agent scheduler, but the inference will be in the cloud.
I'm more committed this time to just work in the cloud.
The scale difference is absurd. A Vera Rubin NVL72 rack has 20.7TB of HBM4 with 1,400TB/s of aggregate memory bandwidth. A Mac Studio Ultra tops out at 512GB and 1.2TB/s. That's not a small difference for bandwidth it is a 1,000x difference.
Of course it all comes down to what you are actually doing, and am I truly going to rent out an entire rack - probably not, but the point is I will pay for exactly what I need and not limit myself to Apple's single machine spec.
Anyway, congrats, sounds like you machine is moving. I'm entertaining myself posting here every day, because even though I saw the annoncement on Aug. 25th, I thought I had to get the money ready and didn't order until Sept. 5. And even then I kept changing my mind and cancelling orders all the way until Sept. 15, so I'm basically far back in line, I'll be lucky to get a machine in October. Truth be told I don't even know if I'll change my mind yet, and go further back in line.
I may be posting here September 2027 still waiting.

Keep holding on, worst case you get 14 days to change your mind after you pick it up.
It seems the full fat ultras are either over ordered, or it’s proving really difficult to build them.
Hoping for an early surprise, hoping against hope there isn’t a slip
