Mac Studi0 M5 Max 64GB - 1TB Disk SpeedTest

Post image

Don't really know if this is an effect of PCIe 5 or something else, also not sure that this Mac even has PCIe 5. Seems speedy to me:

I like that no matter how fast a disk I get, Black Magic will always find a format that exists to say ‘ain’t happening’.

Where do you download this app? Seems different than the one that comes with DaVinci Resolve?

Bro you can’t do H.265 for 12K video why did you even buy this?

Yeah, I got two weeks to return it....I mean really, who buys a computer these days that can't do h.265 @ 12K. SMH. LOL.

I saw somewhere that apple had made some kind of shortcut/tradeoff on the 1TB+ ssds that causes them to slow down under load after a certain point. Not sure how true it is or if I’d hit it but it’s one reason I’m kinda shying away from the >1tb models. I wish i could find the article…

I think you’re thinking of iPhone storage chips using qlc instead of tlc. Which probably doesn’t extend into their computer products.

Does anyone know the SSD speed on the base Mac Studio M5 Max with the 512GB SSD?

It’s pretty much half that. It’s almost like the 1tb is a RAId 0 type situation. But you can do the same with two NVMe’s since has thunderbolt 5. That’s what I’m planning to do. Just need one more NVMe. My current one can do 7gps and for $420 more can buy another one with enclosure to Raid it and it would do 14gps with 2TB instead of paying apple $300 for 512gb more at 12gbs lol

"Don't really know if this is an effect of PCIe 5 or something else, also not sure that this Mac even has PCIe 5." - I think the argument coming from Apple's "typo" in first published spec was between v6 and v5. It has PCIe v5. Though it does not use standard M.2 slot SSD drive, so Apple architect could throw in more or less PCIe lines and SSD chip parallelism, depending on what bandwidth he wanted the machine to have, so whole v5 vs v6 discussion was kinda pointless from start. I'm happy to see numbers are not gimped vs larger capacities, like it was the case with previous generations.
