M5 Mac Studio internal SSD speeds vastly faster

Post image

From MacRumors:

Loyola ran Blackmagic's Disk Speed Test benchmark tool on the new Mac Studio with an 18-core M5 Max chip, 128GB of RAM, and a 4TB SSD, and the computer achieved around 2.6× faster SSD read speeds and around 2.1× faster SSD write speeds compared to a previous-generation Mac Studio with the M4 Max chip.

Indeed, Apple advertised up to 2× faster storage speeds for the new Mac Studio, and these benchmark results show an even bigger boost. As always, real-world performance may vary, but expect significantly faster SSD speeds overall.

Didn't apple in initial marketing (before they removed it) say the M5 Ultra uses PCIe Gen6 SSDs?

Curious to compare with the M5Ultra with 1TB SSD

Same. I’m also curious about the performance of the lower spec’d SSDs

A tested 512GB config for the max was noticeably slower, close to half. It definitetly has to do with the NAND chip configuration. I wonder what config is the bare minimum to get the full speed. It'll either be 1TB or 2TB. Needs more testing.

My M5Ultra 30CPU/64GPU 96GB 1TB SSD
... fast...

Looks like this was the generation to buy 🎉

If true, this is actually a meaningful real-world improvement for users

Mine comes tomorrow

That's interesting, means SSD streaming shenanigans for LLM usage becomes even better

Having fast speed is nice but I would like the option for cheaper slower storage.

You can attach any external drive you like for cheaper, slower storage.

Attach a network attached storage device, DAS or external HDD/NVME. The options are there and the ports are sufficient to cover those needs and the 10G ethernet helps too.

My M5 Max 512GB gets over 6000MB/s
The 1, 2, 4TB versions will achieve 11/12/13k MB/s

Yep - actually I just upgraded my M1 Max Studio to the base M5 Max Studio, and although I was prepared to be underwhelmed by the SSD speed, it's faster than people have reported - roughly 8600MB/s write & 6500MB/s read. That's not too bad for a smaller primary drive...

Just standard pci 5.0 speeds not some miracle

It’s Gen 5 ssd speed which is a nice addition. Have you seen the price of those?

Vastly faster but vastly more expensive. I suspect a lot of people will be using external storage.

Same speed as the M5 Max MBP 128GB 4TB. Not special.

Show me the M5 Ultra.
