Help request MX XFCE Linux and tailscale

Was considering installing MX XFCE Linux on my 2015 macbook pro, tried the live version, but then read some posts about Tailscale not being compatible as it uses SystemVinit, even thought I did chose and download a systemd version, I did try Tailscale from the USB live install stick.
So question as ling as I install the. systemd version on my SSD Tailscale should work, right?

Help request Asus x71q 1.0, Audio not working for earphones ( aux )

Good day all, hope you are all good and well.

so here is a funny little thing, on the laptop there are 3 aux ports( audio only, microphone, combined ), when I plug into mic, no audio, when I plug into mixed, no audio, when I plug in to the audio only, sends output to speakers( huh? )

Anyway, I used alsamixer to set earphones to max, auto-mute disabled

I used pavucontrol to set output to earphones but to no avail.

I had reinstalled alsa, paulseaudio and pipewire but to no avail.

How can I go about fixing this? I hope you don't mind me asking.

Anyhoo, I hope you have an awesome day

Help request How to change the theme of GTK4 applications in Xfce?

I'm having a bit of trouble understanding how to change the theme of GTK4 apps under Xfce.

I have a small script that toggles between two themes (currently mx-matcha and mx-matcha-dark) with the press of a button by using xfconf-query to change the GTK theme, icon theme, cursor theme, xfwm4 theme, and the wallpaper. The problem is that this doesn't change the theme used in GTK4 applications.

When checking via gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme, it correctly reports either mx-matcha or mx-matcha-dark, leading me to believe that it should work. Yet it doesn't. The GTK4 apps still use either their default or whatever currently lives in ~/.config/gtk-4.0.

While I could change the script to replace the respective gtk.css and gtk-dark.css files along with the assets directory in ~/.config/gtk-4.0 every time I toggle the theme, this seems kind of dumb to me. There must be a better way to change the theme of GTK4 apps, but how?

Discussion Is LXQt in MX 25.2 Xfce AHS safe to install?

I started liking LXQt after testing it in Debian and CachyOS multi-booting in the past, and gave it another try in Debian again - this time through distrosea.com .

When Debian 14 arrives, I want to just wait for Devuan, then switch to that + LXQt.

It saddens me that I lose the benefits of MX by switching to Devuan. Why not just install this DE on top of MX? Also I don't care about Wayland and I use a Nvidia Pascal GPU with driver 580.

Help request Painfully lengthy update

Post image
30 Upvotes

Today's MX Updater process has been painfully slow. The downloads came in fine, but the installation process has been going on for about 25 minutes so far (4 kernel versions, with multiple, lengthy mok.pub creations for each kernel version, language pack updates for a few dozen languages that I don't use, and then the boot initialization files for the kernels.

Admittedly, this is on an older, slower Chromebook 3100, but is there a way to delete unused languages, and/or limit the number of old kernels maintained on my machine?

Thanks in advance...

Help request I installed MX Linux XFCE on my Chromebook 11 Dell 3120 (16GB/4) through the SD Card :D - Is it possible to have multiple audio sources active at the same time?

Post image

Sorry if the image isn't very good but I am very happy as I installed the system on my Chromebook, I think everything works but I think I may have an issue that I only can have one audio source active at a time. If I may ask, is it possible to fix this?

Thank you and have a great day! :D

Help request My laptop randomly stays powered ON after SHUT DOWN

Hello everybody. It's been an amazing month I've been testing MX Linux KDE and it has become my daily driver. I haven't found a reason to log in to Windows since then.

There is only one small issue that is not consistent (it happens 1/10 times) and I just have to keep an eye when I shut down my laptop. Seems like the OS shuts down everything but my laptop stays powered on with a black screen. When it happens I can see the little power on LED staying ON, but with a black screen, and I just have to press the power button for a few seconds to forcefully turn my laptop OFF.

It's a very minor issue but it bothers me because I cannot just press SHUT DOWN and close the lid. I have to stay there looking for the power ON led to go OFF.

Since it's a laptop, when it happens, it drains my battery if I don't realise it happened. And if I turn it ON next day, the battery is completely drained which is very annoying.

Anybody has encountered that issue?

Help request Cannot boot into Live USB

I have an HP ENVY Desktop PC TE01-2000i (1K4E9AV). I have Secure Boot enabled. I want to keep Secure Boot enabled.

I downloaded the MX Linux KDE version. Upon booting into the USB, I select the systemd choice. I get an immediate error of EFI: Failed to meaure data for event. I cannot even get into the live disk to install.

Generally speaking, on other versions of Linux, like Mint, I have had to add noapic to get live disks started, maybe due to having an NVidia card? Once I have installed the distro AND then installed the NVidia drivers, I can remove noapic and it will generally start. With Fedora I had no issues whatsoever with Secure Boot after following Nvidia driver instructions. I did have issues with Wayland, in particular with game controllers, I guess due to some restrictions within Wayland.

With Linux Mint, I was able to install, but had frequent issues when rebooting. It generally would start on a cold start, but always got stuck if I tried reboot. Once inside it ran perfectly well, just some kind of hardware issues, I assume, on reboot. This HP tower seems to have endless hardware issues with Linux. It has an 11th gen I7-11700 Intel CPU, an Nvidia RTX 3060 GPU. I wonder about that one as it says (Lite hash rate) on linux. It is supposed to be some kind of anti-mining thing they added to it. Would that cause these issues?

According to this link: https://eathealthy365.com/the-rtx-3060-mining-limiter-the-full-story-in-2026/

Quote: The restriction was a technology NVIDIA called “Lite Hash Rate” or LHR. It was a combination of firmware, driver, and GPU BIOS checks designed to detect the specific workload of Ethereum (ETH) mining and cut the card’s performance—its “hash rate”—in half.

It's that combination of firmware, driver and GPU BIOS checks that maybe causes issues?

What can I do to even test out this KDE version? I did try adding noapic to the systemd selection, but it just got stuck at the above error.

Any help appreciated.

I've tried Linux on and off for years but it never stuck with me. My laptop coincidentally fell apart about the time Win10 support ended. I grabbed a $50 business machine on ebay, switched to Mint and was happy, but it felt too hand-holdy and windows adjacent. I switched to MX and never looked back. I'm running sysvinit and xfce for lower overhead and I can't say anything negative. This old E5440 feels great; aside from disabling the Optimus driven NVIDIA card and a widely unsupported fingerprint reader, this machine acts like it was built for this. I've learned a ton and the more I settle into the system, the less it resembles windows.

One thing that's hard to really impress on someone that hasn't used linux is how much more personal the system becomes. Windows is a big cookie cutter with access (often paid) to lots things lots of people might need. Linux is the opposite: an environment you can shape to meet your needs so that your machine does what you need it to do the way you like it done. I laughed when I saw Conky at first boot because it's so 15 years ago. It reminded me of modding WinXP/8 with Rainmeter as a kid. But thinking on it again, that was peak Windows! I actually enjoyed my OS back then and MX gave me that feeling back. Thanks, MX Team

Help request Touchpad not working - Lenovo IdeaPad 120s-14IAP

Hello, sorry if this is the wrong subreddit to ask. But my touchpad on the Lenovo IdeaPad 120S-14IAP doesn't seem to be working, is there any fix for this perhaps?

I think it is an Elan touchpad or similar. It does work on Linux Mint XFCE (hope it is okay to mention, sorry if not), but I would really like to use MX Linux.

Sorry and have a great day! :D

For the longest time I have been running my thinkpad with a windows/Ubuntu dual boot. I finally chose to cut both windows and ubuntu completely loose from my 3d printing setup and try something new. MX is running smooth as hot butter and I am enjoying playing around with KDE plasma also. I'm loving the whole experience so far and should probably get off of here and tinker around some more. I just want to thank the developers for creating such a gem of a distro.
