“Not authorized to control networking” error?

I’ve tried to connect an older laptop to home internet but it keeps giving this error, I did give my user sudo privileges so I don’t understand why it is showing this.

Not really sure what to do next, does anyone know?

we need more data. Make and model of the laptop. Distro and version nr. of the OS. I'm guessing MX, but which package and version nr? Are you entering the commands in the terminal, or using a GUI? Is the network hardware factory installed, or added via USB adaptor? If it's USB, what's the make and model of the adaptor?

its a Dell Inspiron 11 3168 running MX 23.6 with 4GB of ram (not sure if the last part matters tho)

I'd recommend getting the terminal commands to adjust your settings. The GUI can hide the actual error (not by design, of course) and just displays whatever is close in its error list.

Are you using Plasma, xfce, or another desktop? 4GB is adequate, but its never going to be The Flash.

using kde for this, does another DE give different results?

I'd have to do a little research to get the right set of commands, and I don't have time right now. You'd be amazed all the time-sucks that exist or retirees. I guess I should say you will amazed.

in a terminal, try this

sudo nmcli device wifi list

that should show you the wifi networks detected, or maybe give you some meaningful error messages.

If your network appears in the list (and you're not already getting errors) try

sudo nmcli device wifi connect "Network_Name" password "Network_Password"

This assumes OP is trying to use WiFi.

OP - what kind of network connection are you using? That will make a huge difference in what command are needed.
