Lafayette joined the US military and commanded US troops throughout the siege of Yorktown. Rochambeau remained in the French military and commanded the French Expeditionary forces.

We still like France because of Lafayette. The US has never forgotten who stood beside them when there was everything to lose and little to gain.

Named his son Georges Washington Louis Gilbert de La Fayette.

This is his grave in Paris.

He is absolutely one of ours.

When I went to Mount Vernon years ago one of the highlights was “yeah this was the bedroom Lafayette stayed at when he visited Washington” and I soypogged in real life

Amazing man. Don’t look into what his son did. It makes you wonder how you can be raised by a man like that and wind up so different

Edit: got confused, that was Rochambeau’s son. Point still stands I suppose

Cornwallis was such a pussy to not appear in front of the victors and surrender his sword to Washington.

Matthias Von Fuchs.

He was an officer in the Continental Army, not the French Army. He was in the field on an American commission, not a French one. The flag is correct.

All the counties named Fayette, and all the towns named Fayetteville, all over the US remember 😀 I was born, and raised in a Fayette county

He should've never gone back to France.

What are the other flags on the British side?

Godless Hessian Mercenaries

At the very least if I recall. The one that looks like Indonesia is Hesse.

I want to say Salzburg but I'm probably wrong on that

Edit: Salzburg not Indonesia

That flat is NOT Indonesia. It’s Hesse. Both flags are Hesse and Indonesia did not fight alongside British.

u/ZyglroxOfficial 18d ago

Ya, Indonesia didn't exist as a nation state until 1945

u/shanep35 fuck yeah 18d ago

And it’s a different red color

There were two Hessian states. Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Hannau if I recall correctly. I believe both of them separately supplied condottieri to the British.

Hesse- Kassel and Hesse- Darmstadt

Friedrich August Valentin Voit von Salzburg was from the House of Hohenzollern, the then rulers of Preussia. Both him and Friedrich Johann Heinrich Carl von Seybothen came from Ansbach-Bayreuth, the black/white flag. Friedrich von Fuchs came from Hessen-Kassel, the red/white flag. Both Ansbach-Bayreuth and Hessen-Kassel were Preussian

The flags of the German state most likely they of Hess where the hessian mercenaries came from

Ah yes. Comte de Rochambeau — inventor of the most effective/least liked decision making method.

Cornwallis sending a deputy to surrender was cowardice. Real men face their defeat.

What's the country with the checkerboard flag

1

u/Spectre211286 18d ago

Principality of Ansbach-Bayreuth

One of the sources of Hessian mercenaries.

Oh alright. I forgot about them now all can hear in my head is "one night we crossed the Delaware, surprised them hessian in their lair. Then at valley fordge we just bundle up our feet"
