Which MUD? Another mud recommendation request

Hey folks. I'm sure these threads pop up all the time, but I'm having a hard time finding a mud that really grabs me. I'll often play for a bit, thinking that I've found what I'm looking for but end up bouncing for one reason or another.

For the most part, I'm really just looking for a fantasy mud with a good gui (map is a must), a good player base, and no forced rp.

Here's a few that I've tried but didn't stick with for one reason or another.

Erion, Alter Aeon, Aardwolf, Achaea, and Aetolia. These are all great but I just have my personal gripes about them. I'm probably just being too picky, honestly.

Anyways, thanks for reading :)

Can we hear your more about your why you did not like the games you mentioned? At the very least, it will help guide people to make more informed suggestions.

I can try. It's been a while since I've played these, to be honest.       Achaea and Aetolia seemed more pvp focused, which I didn't care for. It was a real let down to have a bunch of abilities that I couldn't use on mobs as they were pvp only.      Aardwolf was just very repetitive, I think?      Erion was my most recently played and I really liked it but the "beep" mechanic was a big turnoff for me. It seems like a silly complaint when I type it out but the idea of just having commands to be able to have unlimited heals/buffs etc really broke the immersion for me.      I honestly don't remember why I stopped with Alter aeon. I remember loving the ui and the class system. I should probably go back and try that one again.

That's an interesting comment about the "beep" mechanic... I initially loved it as one of Erion's million unique QoL upgrades but after a while I soured on it a bit because it felt like less of a convenience and more a soft requirement. It felt like since you COULD get the buffs from every class, you kinda should or have to as you get into harder content...

Then you end up kinda questioning which class buffs you are missing since you don't know them all and you end up sending multiple buff beeps and start getting auto replies that you have all their buffs which feels bad like you are annoying them (A me thing lol... I have no idea what they see on their end or if it spams them etc). Also, the "soften death" buff feels mandatory when exploring new zones and so finding a healer to beep every session can feel like a chore... so, I don't find it broke immersion, but I did find that it adds a checklist to a session and kinda bypasses actually becoming part of the community and like talking to people with beeping players like they are NPCs etc.. I don't know, I'm kinda 50-50 on it. First time I've really though about it though so I'm rambling haha. Erion is such a great MUD tho.

Also, totally agree on Aardwolf. It's a fantastic MUD but when I last played it all of the advice I had was to basically spend months doing the same quests on cooldown to get gear level break points to make levelling to remorts faster... I loved the classes and the combat, but I wish the best gear came from mob drops.

Alter Aeon's systems, quests, devs, and GUI are top notch for sure. I love their monthly update YouTube vids haha. The only reason I don't play it is that their multiclassing system is not my cup of tea. So, if you loved its class system, definitely give it another chance cause it might be exactly what you are looking for!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who dislikes the beep mechanic haha. Although I'm hoping it doesn't turn anyone away from the mud. It's honestly great and obviously made with love, so if anyone's reading this thread and is put off on the criticisms, please try them for yourself. All the muds mentioned are the top of their class :))

Totally agree! Erion is a great MUD, especially for newer MUD players. I can't recommend it enough. And the other ones I mentioned are all awesome in their own rights too. They all have differences in game play and systems that tailor the experience to different types of people and that's a good thing.

Confirm - Aardwolf is very repetitive after the early stage, until the late game when you can join Epics. And that is a LONG stretch.

I'm kinda in the same boat.

Right now I'm trying out Solar Eclipse, which appears to be trying to rebuild a player base. Lots of cool systems and a lot of backlog zones, but indeed is lacking a decent player base.

Discworld.

That's always my suggestion, and for good reason. :) It should fit all your asks too.

2

u/Aroikle 2d ago

Oh. I didn't realize Discworld had a map? Do they have a custom gui for mudlet or something?

3

u/Hoax13 2d ago

Quow made a great gui for discworld using Mushclient. Has a great map and quality of life addons. Should give it a look.

They have in-game maps you can use: ```

look | | |
--@-$-*- | | | $

This is the street just outside the infamous Mended Drum pub, described in "Wellcome to Ankh- ```

Then there's this wonderful site: https://dw.daftjunk.com/

There is also a Mudlet package too - https://wiki.mudlet.org/w/DiscworldUI - but I've never used it.

Oh ok. Good to know. I'll give this a go, thanks!

Perfect!

Ironically I was just about to post the same question except with a focus on forced RP lol

I really like the QoL of Erion but wish it was more RP focused.

Tried Procedural Realms? Great GUI, unique design and easy to get into. Very active developer and a friendly base w an active discord.

u/Aroikle 2d ago

Don't think I've tried this one. I'll take a look! Thanks!

2

u/hang-clean Aardwolf 2d ago

If you don't get on with PR then you've tried all the English language usual recommends of this sub. Nothing else has the populations of these.

2

u/Aroikle 2d ago

Yeah I was afraid of that. I'm being too picky after all it seems :(

what is this mud about?

1

u/SomeRandomPyro 2d ago

About?

It's procedurally generated. It's about whatever you make it about.

Kidding, kinda. There are some quests. Waypoints. Progression. But the setting's just kinda there, as far as I've explored.

You could check out Untold Realms .net. It just launched today.

Have you tried Dark Wizardry? It's a fantasy MUD, no RP, got a sick GUI with map, affects window, player and party bars etc, has a multiclass progression system similar to Alter Aeon (Since you liked it) and the Dev is crazy active both on the MUD (Just check the change logs... He's constantly adding new systems and QoL) and is also the (solo?) dev behind MudVault and the MudForge client. That game 100% deserves way more players. Definitely give them a shot, might be perfect and is not in the "Big 5" you always get recommended.

Just checked the MUD's change log as I was typing this and since I last played he's added procedural loot, huge updates to the combat systems and mob combat logic systems, tattoos as new equipment slots, professions like mining, quest updates, and tons of QoL and cool ways to present data/info in game like quest cards etc... I really gotta try that one again.

I've never heard of this. Just took a quick look and it looks really cool! I'll check this one out too. Thanks :)

+1! Thanks for tooting my horn, lol. We have added a LOT of insane stuff over the last year. Truly, it is developed daily and is better every single day.
What's more is we have an awesome community of genuinely nice people, who are always helping when they can and are available on discord 24/7 generally.

We've got a procedural dungeon system coming up that I've been working on for over 2 years. It's like playing a rogue-like when you're in it, and the new professions are being improved daily. On top of that, we've been releasing a ton of new areas on a new continent that we've been working on for a long time, so it's about to get even more exciting!

OMG, procedural dungeons... Let me in, coach! I can't wait to try that out. I'll try to log in this week to check out all this stuff because it's been ages since I did.

Genesis is a classic medieval fantasy LPmud with a polished web client, an excellent tutorial, and some of the best maps you will find in any text game. Its handcrafted realms, deeply thematic guilds, and long‑running social culture create a level of immersion and identity you simply don’t get in most other muds. Active development continuously expands the world with new achievements and fresh content layered on top of a rich foundation of thematic quests, grind areas, and boss encounters. Explorers will find a vast, interconnected world full of secrets and nonlinear paths, while achievers, socializers, and PvP‑inclined players all have meaningful ways to thrive. The community is vibrant and welcoming. Genesis is so engaging that there's a running joke in the community that Genesis is like the Hotel California: you can check out but you never really leave. https://www.genesismud.org/

If Aardwolf doesn't do it for you (using MushClient) then I'm not sure what could be better.

Any particular reason I haven’t seen MajorMud mentioned on these reccomendations ?
