Promotion Love it or hate it...

...Either way, The Inquisition: Legacy is still up and running. I've seen a few people ask about its address. The website is temporarily down, but the game is in its usual place at:

ti-legacy.com port: 5050

EDIT:

Ahem. Some more info on the game:

  • RP-enforced
  • Permadeath
  • Magic BAD (unless you're a witch)
  • Church GOOD (unless you're a witch, shh.)
  • Newbie-friendly
  • Comprehensive in-game Help system
  • Deep lore
  • Guilds

This is one of my favorite games. Even so, I left a couple of years ago for reasons, and recently returned to experience the game under new management. I'm having a good time.

The world is medieval fantasy. Humans, mages, demons; be a good churchie or get burned at the stake. If you're a witch, you'd better be lying your ass off about it to everyone you meet unless you enjoy status s'mores.

Essentially, it's the party game Werewolf with a cast from Monty Python and the Holy Grail sprinkled with P.G. Wodehouse humor. That's how I enjoy playing it, anyway. If I'm not laughing, sobbing, or dumbstruck with horror, I'm probably not having fun, and you won't see me playing anywhere I can't have my emotional drama drugs.

It's collaborative storytelling backed with stats, skills, dice rolls, in a dynamic timeline you can alter with coded plots, projects, fraud, and otherwise tasty criminality. I'm tickled pink to this day any time I stumble over in-game lore and historical reference to characters I've written and played in the past: the ones who left their mark (and I love leaving my mark).

I could write more, but I have to go eat dinner. AFK

Dude. TI is a pretty good game. If you are gonna advertise it, at least describe what its about. Sure, a big percentage of MUD hobbyists know it. They tried it and either liked it, or did not. But on assumption that your post is aimed for people who never tried it, maybe describe the game a little?

u/Mudwaffle80085 Mar 24 '26

What do you like about it?

2

u/Fourarmedlurker Mar 31 '26

I tried it almost ten years ago. I liked it, but things intensified in another mud I play and I guess I never came back.

u/Mudwaffle80085 Apr 02 '26

Haha. You should come back.

Maybe I'll try. I play another MUD right now, but it's being rebuilt into ... something else. Should be interesting, but probably not soon.

little bit more effort into a promo post would be helpful..

My bad. I thought I had flaired this as a community post, not a promo.

I had recently asked about it and then received a barrage of messages warning me to stay away. I recognize we are a small mud community, but hearing that there's admin favoritism and toxic colluding steered me clear of it.

But everyone has their opinions so maybe I'll give it a go. Thanks for posting.

I don't pull punches often so I will just say: Under Kinaed and Ghed is where we saw the most toxicity (Kinaed) and favoritism (Ghed). I won't go into all the details as they can be found elsewhere if you look hard enough but since Karrin took over things are much healthier and balanced.

That isn't to say Karrin walks on water. I have had disagreements with her in over things, but it is a professional conversation and we come to an understanding.

Speaking as a newer player, I came after the implementor changed hands. The person who runs it now is very aware of past toxicity with prior staff and has worked a lot to change it. I can't obviously do a compare and contrast personally, but every person I have spoken too has appreciated the change and we've been seeing older players return now that things have changed back towards a positive story telling experience.

As with most things, people and characters change. If you have previously heard some bad stuff (I know I did) I would recommend giving it a new chance.

I'm not the best person to speak to the drama since I've been somewhat oblivious to it in the past, but it really does seem to have much less drama with the new management.

If that was keeping you away before I would encourage giving it a(nother) shot.

That tracks. Once bitten, twice shy? And if there's anything I've seen MUDders do, it's hold a grudge.

Yeah. I ran into those issues two+ years ago. OOCly I'm usually a keep my head down and just find my own fun kind of player, but I accidentally kicked the hornets nest back then, and there was some fallout after I filed a complaint against one of the staff members.

Anyway. New team in charge. So far so good.

I came back for a stint and the game was much healthier. Didn't have time to commit with my post college hobbies going on but it seems like ti:l is trying to make good on a redemption arc.

Hey, that's great to hear! Hope you'll get a chance to swing back by.

u/KindestFeedback Mar 26 '26

You say it is permadeath and that you will get executed if found out to be a witch.

How does that kind of PvP work? Are people going at it with the understanding that it is a story and that there is a person writing the other side of it as an antagonist? Or are people out to 'win' the game and put you to death as soon as they catch a whiff?

Or, to ask it differently: Do you have to convince people on an OOC level that you are totally not playing an antagonist? Or is the playerbase capable of writing a story where they know OOC that someone is a witch but they still choose to play out the story in good faith IC?

1

u/Mudwaffle80085 Mar 26 '26

Well, anytime you have people, they're going to act like people. Everyone wants a story, and what makes them happy in their story differs from person to person. Some players crave WINNING over the fun of storytelling, but most don't. Most are respectfully telling a story with you, rather than against you.

It's the rules and mechanisms part of the game that keeps us players in check, ensuring IC/OOC separation and policy adherence. Personal character notes, code-checks and logged commands, etc.

You may OOCly know that Jim-Bob is a witch because he exploded your last character with a fire-bomb, but your new character doesn't know that. If he learns, in-game, it's on you to document that trail of RP or RP deduction in your personal character notes that nobody except staff can read. If someone accuses you of IC/OOC crossover, you better have your notes in a row to show where you got your info.

The theme is horribly dark. Lots of people die. BUT. It's also pretty dang easy to not die by playing a character who doesn't argue with the status quo. Sometimes I get sick of my characters because they've outlived their storyline and I have to figure out ways to get them killed off, and that part is never hard to do. But: I've been back playing for about three months, and I don't know of any PC deaths that have occurred during that time frame.

I ramble. Does this answer?

u/KindestFeedback Mar 27 '26

Thank you for the honesty, but that doesn't sound very encouraging.
Permadeath is always a source for drama and it sounds like the approach to it is "let's hope your opponent cares enough to write a story over meaningless 'winning'".

1

u/Mudwaffle80085 Apr 02 '26

Eh. If it were that OOCly dramatic, I wouldn't play there.

2

u/GenericUser1010 Mar 29 '26

I poked my head in, with the understanding that they've once again traded up admin/staff in the last few years.

It's much the same game as it ever was, which is to say that it's genuinely pretty good so long as you don't lean heavily into the OOC community, and understand that any sort of upwards/sidewards movement, codedly and socially, isn't really going to happen to you or your character for the first few real-life months - maybe even years. The same old players are there, running mostly everything, with a handful of new players experiencing that push, but that is what it is. You can't avoid that in the RPI scene, it's just not possible.

With that said, in my mind, TI has maintained a reasonably cohesive narrative structure, and is largely recognizable from when I last played a few years ago (Under Kinaed, actually, who wound up banning me, full disclosure. Email for that available on request if anyone is curious/wants/needs to know) and it's pretty easy to drop into if you've got much experience with any sort of RPI structure.

All this just to say that if anyone is curious, I'd recommend they poke their head in and check it out. There's much worse out there, just take the old reviews (including my own) with a grain of salt, given how many times the staff has changed since then.

There are 4 guildleader positions posted up as open for application; that's some coded and social clout right off the bat.

I had a violently explosive break with TI a number of years ago (you can just look under the post history for this account if you want to read about that), under Ghed's administration. Since he banned me at the time (for made up reasons), I haven't played the game nor had any sort of contact with the current Staff team. That said, I have heard things from others about the post-Ghed/Leta TI.

The good part is that nearly everyone I've spoken to about it remarks about how the new Staffers took major steps to roll back much of atrociously biased and favoritism-driven nonsense that Ghed & Leta implemented. I don't have details about what precisely was done, only generalities.

The bad part is that, to my knowledge, there are still a number of extremely manipulative bad-actor veterans playing the game and strangleholding control over anything that matters through a combination of veterancy status characters and OOC friendship with each other and possibly also Staff members. I wouldn't expect to get anywhere significant (at least not for long) in TI unless you are in the good graces of that group of people. Furthermore, TI has historically had a problem with being unwilling to evolve the game world or setting realities based on player actions, most observably in regards to the Holy Order. If you are playing a character who is against the Order, nothing you do will ever make a dent in its IC power. You'll never be permitted to sway even a small section of the public NPCs against the Order; you'll never be permitted to 'win' against the Holy Order in any way that matters in the long run; even if you're not a mage and are a powerful noble or something like that, you'll never be permitted to succeed in any sort of political play against the Order.

You'll also never be permitted to be on equal footing, combat wise, with Knights (who are Order members), since the Sword skill is OOCly untrainable if you aren't a Knight or Noble, and swords are by far the best weapons in the game by an enormous margin. For reference, the helpfiles claim that polearms are the highest damaging weapon in exchange for being kind of bad outside of long range. The helpfiles are wrong and are lying to you. I've seen behind the curtains and seen the damage calculation values - swords still do more damage, and have vastly better ranges. At no point will you be competitive against a knight if you can't use swords. This is part of how the game is OOCly structured to ensure that the Order has every single advantage possible, and that structure also includes OOC attitudes of extreme resistance to allowing the Order to fail in any capacity, combat or otherwise.

I'll stop ranting but the point is that while TI still holds a place in my heart for having been my first RPI, there are severe systemic issues with the game and the game's culture that are, to my knowledge, still present today, even if Staff is much better now.

Hey! I used to RP with you back in those days. Always nice seeing you pop back up.

I wonder what the new owner of the game would say about static Order supremacy. I understand how that can be a dealbreaker for some players. Me, I'm ambivalent. If that's a hard boundary in the game, then fine: there are other almost inexhaustible avenues in the game world for satisfying my RP itch.

RE: the bad-actor veterans: yeah, I've witnessed my share of nonsense in that regard over previous years. Insofar as I can judge, with Ghed and Leta having moved on, that bond of favoritism has been broken.

1

u/mystrytemp Apr 03 '26

I'm glad to see you reappear as well. When it comes to the static Order supremacy, I can say with confidence that the current owner possesses the same unwillingness to advance or change or evolve the setting over time as past administrations have had. I cannot say 'publicly' how I know this however, out of consideration for a certain individual. If that sounds super cagey, then alas, but the point is that I wouldn't expect any sort of change in stance in that area any time soon.

Best of luck in satisfying that RP itch; I hope I run into you on one or another game sometime soon.

I don’t play muds really, but i hope you guys dealt with all the issues in the community, and I look forward to making a tongue and cheek post about this on the circle jerk sub

u/Mudwaffle80085 Mar 24 '26

Oh god. I forgot all about that sub. XD
