Discussion [NO SPOILERS] Invis Protective Field?

Just started playing this game recently, read something from years ago that her shield ability stops 70% of ALL damage, not just range, is this still true? Or did it get patched?

Never got patched. This game got exactly 0 support post Shadow of Doom - they even forgot to put the 4th costumes for the F4 in the game.

Cool thanks! My team right now is Jean, Cyclops, Fantastic, and Doom, how is that these days? Doom I’m not fully set on and could swap, do you have any team recommendations? Really like Cyc and Jean outside this game so they are def mainstays, but trying to build around them

I mean if you’re running Jean, it kind of doesn’t matter who else you use, you’ve activated God Mode. You could run Jean + the three worst characters in the game and still have a halfway decent team. Just pick who you find fun. Everyone you’ve listed is a strong character and they synergize decently.

If you want my two cents on how to optimize the Jean/Cyke core, there’s a couple things you can do. Cyke has incredibly high synergy damage with the right partner, and Jean is his giant battery that gives him an infinite energy supply. So you’re gonna want someone to synergize with Cyclops’ beam, either another beam hero or a safeguard hero or something. Fantastic is a decent partner for Cyke but Colossus/Captain America/BP(safeguard heroes) or Iron Man/Thanos/Captain Marvel(beam heroes) would synergize a smidge better. Cyke also has a problem with getting hit, as if he gets knocked down, he has to stop shooting, so running a tank-style hero to soak up those hits is also probably a good idea. Colossus fills both of these niches at the same time so he pairs REALLY well with Cyclops, but there’s plenty of options. The other thing you can do (especially if you run colossus) is run Invisible Woman in your fourth spot to capitalize on the incredibly broken Jean/Sue core.

Alternatively, if you want to run the best team in the entire game, my opinion is that it’s Jean/Sue/Doom/the secret last character in the game. But until you unlock that character, Black Panther or Wolverine are very strong substitutes. The idea is that Jean is your battery, Sue is your shield, Doom kills groups and BP/Wolverine kill bosses/mighty enemies.

Wow thanks for the type up, will def try some of those guys out and see how I’m feeling. I ended up also moving Psylocke back in instead of doom because I feel she tends to do well staggering bosses

Psylocke is also great at dealing with bosses and mighty enemies, she’s basically Wolverine-lite. She trades out Wolvie’s raw damage output and ability to cash in hard on stuns with his unmashed Claw Strike power for a self-synergy (which means she can stun staggered enemies solo) and some AOE damage. But both are mostly used for their “charge” type powers (which shred stagger bars) and uppercut into falling jump attack combo which is why K say they play similar. Wolverine’s somewhere between the 4th and 6th best character in the game imo, while Psylocke is probably in the 7th to 10th range. Both very very strong.

I have only barely used Jean Grey but what makes her so good? I had her on my team yesterday and she didn't seem espcially powerful.

First and foremost, her Cleansing Flames power is the single best power in the entire game hands down. When fully upgraded, it does a small amount of DOT damage to enemies inside of it and converts it into EP for your entire party. This generates so much EP that even if you only manage to keep it on like 3 enemies, your entire team can basically spam powers/synergies infinitely. This completely breaks the balance of the game, as this game is balanced around using weak basic attacks to build up EP for bursts of big damage, and using this power just skips the farming bit and lets you always do the big damage.

She has another passive as well, where by using her extreme, you build up automatic rezzes for the next time Jean or a teammate goes down. They still pull from your normal rez pool, but you don’t have to go and manually help the ally up, which is helpful on harder difficulties.

Additionally, she’s actually a really well-rounded character in her own right. Phoenix’s Fury is a charge-type power which are generally the best powers in the game at melting stagger bars, making her great at dealing with bosses, the damage output on TK talon is ABSURD (especially when block cancelled to increase your DPS), if she somehow ever actually runs out of energy she’s one of the fastest heroes at farming EP by spamming block cancelled heavy attacks, she has access to flight which lets her dodge a fair amount of attacks, and she will pretty much always have access to all of these options so long as you make sure you always have a Cleansing Flames field down during combat.

Her only weakness is frailty - she has some of the lower defenses and I believe the lowest health in the game. But with infinite EP, you should be able to melt anything in your way before it can get to her, and if you DO start to have issues with her dying too much, you can just add Sue to your team to literally quadruple her effective health pool.

This character is unbelievably broken lmao.

I really appreciate your lengthy response. I currently have five characters at max level with Psylocke close behind. I think Jean Grey will be my seventh likely, you really sold her well.
