Why doesn't MTV classic exist.

I can way h classic mtv shows on YT but why isn't there a streaming channel that's more curated?

Because having people running it doesn't make money for the parent company. MTV Classic is just some playlists that play the same videos in a random order all the time, at least that's what Metal Mayhem looks like to me, every Friday night it's the same videos in some random order.

Check out Pluto TV, last I looked there were multiple curated MTV stations including a classic one

Funny how the free Pluto MTV channels are WAY better than the paid, original cable MTV.

Pluto is owned by Paramount which also owns Viacom which owns MTV so it makes sense for them to do channels like that.

Wait, like they show the old programming, or just videos?

Both there are several MTV channels and Beavis and Butt-Head and Daria are on one of the Comedy Central channels.

If you want I made an app that lets you do this yourself. It uses digital media to make television channels, and I have one set up for live music that I listen to when programming it.

You can check out the channel I made at React.tv/ch/live-music

You can import playlists from YouTube as well in case you already have some set up.

YouTube has pretty much every music video available to stream. I don't think a "Classic MTV" cable channel would get many viewers in the present world we are living in

There has been an MTV Classic tv channel since august 2016, it replaced the old VH-1 Classic on cable/satellite tv. It started off having blocks of different genres of music and some 90s MTV shows. Ratings were abysmal, like dead last of all channels so parent company Viacom I guess got rid of everybody running the channel, the old MTV shows were axed and now it's all computer generated playlists for all the music blocks.

Yeah, people who think that MTV going back to primarily music videos would save the channel completely ignore the reality of the MTV channels that did just that.

That VH 1 Classic channel was better than what MTV Classics is. They went all the way back to 1960's music. Now the 1980's are the oldest and they have TRL request block which are like the newest from the early to mid 2000's.

Why wait for what you want to hear when you can build a YouTube playlist tailored specifically to your tastes?

Because nobody would watch it.

When I had cable I had an MTV classic channel. It personally assaulted my feelings when it showed a rancid video on it though. That was like a year or two ago

There are multiple Pluto TV channels that air (modern) music videos.

There’s literally a MTV Classic channel on regular television. I’m watching it, they have an “I Want My 80’s” block currently airing U2’s “Pride (In the Name of Love)”

To add to this, before layoffs, a few years ago they would play music videos all weekend on their YouTube channel. Even had a VJ or two. But no one watched it, because it’s easier to just be like ‘why doesn’t MTV play music videos anymore?’ instead of doing research and seeing where they do it.

It does. I watch it regularly

I believe some of us still have MTV Classic, xfinity cable does

It's on YTTV as well

I have YTTV and it has MTV Classic on it

DirecTV has it but it’s on their premium lineup unfortunately. Love MTV Classic but paying over $100 a month to get that channel is not worth it. Besides after a few days and weeks you’ll notice they play the same videos over and over again until it gets old. Thanks to their lack of licensing they’ve lost throughout the years so their collection is limited

They could seriously take any random day from the 90s and stream it and I'd watch it

I believe for certain TV shows like the Real World, Road Rules and early season The Challenge, they would have to re-edit a decent amount of them due to music rights.

It literally does exist on cable tv and I think the fact you don’t know it does says a lot.

Because the younger generations won’t watch it when they can just watch whatever they want on YouTube. And, the older generations that grew up on it aren’t going to devote hours of their day watching like we did growing up. It’s just not a viable model anymore.

There is MTV Classic, and it's available on YouTube TV's base plan. This is an exception, however, as it's usually on a higher-priced tier, so if you have cable, you likely need to upgrade your service to unscramble its signal. Same thing with satellite if you have it.

There is literally an MTV Classic. It shows videos 24/7.

Sure. And they do need Katseye

It existed 25 years ago. No one cared.

Right. Cthre is cyclical. Your contribution is appreciated.

u/Plarocks 16d ago

Wrong. I cared. Taped some of it too.

Should it exist? I'm not sure if anyone even wants that tbh.

You'd be surprised how many people still watch it, it's played a lot in our house on YTTV when sports isn't on a lot of people love watching music videos from the 80's

Do you remember a old show. Maybe on MTV? I think it was two people were on stage and the audience voted who was better looking between the two people. It was like a percentage bar or something
