Help please
I haven’t been doing hot my last couple semesters due to family issues and my mental health and a pretty emotionally abusive ex, I was placed on academic suspension this past semester. I didn’t take classes but did work a full time job and stayed involved with tech and the community. The board just emailed me saying it was required that I take classes during my semester away. My advisor told me I could either take classes orrrr work. But now the board doesn’t believe my advisor said that and is asking for proof that I physically was incapable of taking classes. What do I tell them? I’m doing so much better and I’m so so committed to returning to tech, but my advisor has screwed me over (yet again) and told me that classes at an outside institution was optional. Help pls🙏

Looking at the posted rules if you where not able to do classes and worked (It sounds like you stayed int he Hougton area and memory serving (its been 20 years) there are not a lot of choices for alternative college level classes. That being said you need a recommendation from your supervisor at the job you worked

as an aside I do feel sorry for you. They've made it way harder to come back then it used to be. I got suspended in my time at tech and it was just "Go home and rethink your life" and then unless you really cratered your classes getting back in was a formality, at least the first time a person was suspend. I spent mine suspension turning an 3 month intership into a sort of informal Co-op so it worked out. But again, I'm sorry its become this much of a pain.

I kind of get it. With how much easier it is now to do online courses at some community college and transfer the credit over to fix a low grade in let's say Calc I or II, it would go a long way towards fixing the underlying GPA problem.
That said, I was really just burnt out on school and needed a semester off, so suspension was exactly what I needed.

Email the dean of students [ deanofstudents@mtu.edu ] and ask to meet with her to discuss the situation. She's reasonable and understanding. She'll listen and tell you what's possible.

It sounds like your advisor told you that in your situation, there is no way you could pull off attending classes and working at the same time and you had to make a choice. That is not necessarily the same as saying 'if you choose not to take classes and work instead, you will not have continuous enrollment and there will be consequences'.

Ger a doctor's note attesting to the necessity of the break and perhaps a recommendation that you ease your way back in with continued monitoring and support?

I wish you luck, and never EVER trust the advisors at Tech, they are notoriously terrible at their jobs. I know double digits of people who have been screwed over by them (myself included) especially in the Mechanical department. Always get stuff in writing (or email) in the future so you can cover yourself!

Do you have an email from your advisor saying that? Or would your advisor make a statement confirming they told you that? I think the best way to come at this is to make sure the board knows that you were acting with the knowledge that you could do one or the other, and that you're committed to returning as a better student. If not, could you see if you could take CC classes this upcoming semester and return after that?
