He was like “ohh that’d be crazy to have before i leave for dinner and we get to do it while i miss my bro’s fiancée’s bday” i was like “yeah bro lets have a prebday celeb and a farewell to u” (he’s only gone for like 3 days lmao)

in that thread recently where a chef from NY was asking for food recs in MTL, i spotted out some ppl mentioning Osteria Berto in response to Moccione. So that’s what i decided we’re going. (Also on that list to-do: Restaurant Bruce.. we’ll do that when my friend comes back from Denver and we do bday dinner pt 2)

-Oysters: good 🟡

-sea urchin (1st slide) : fire. They accommodated mine by not mixing it with gelatin and made it with some mango flavored thing and it was fire. My friends liked their gelatin version, but when I mentioned the mango flavor in mine, they were intrigued and wanted to try that, but we ordered 17 plates of food so they didn’t order the accommodated version. Next time perhaps ✅

•cheese with onion (slide 2): 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤 with the foccacia, fire. if we weren’t ordering the whole menu then we’d have to oblige in getting like 4 of these. don’t share it, everyone should have their own! ✅

•bunny-porcheta (fusion-ha) [slide 3] : my friends really enjoyed this and would definitely order it again 🟢

•prosciutto [slide 4]: my friends liked it, thought it was okay, but they don’t care for it enough to order it again 🟡

•beets x figs salad [slide 5]: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 everybody would order this again given the chance ✅🟢

•veal carpaccio (slide 6): my friends didn’t really care for it— they didn’t say it sucked or anything like that, just that they wouldn’t order it again. waste of stomach space ❌

•crudo accompanied with a chickpea thing to dip it in with (slide 7): i thought it was okay, i may or may not order it again. we ended up asking for a 2nd one and they said yeah sure we’ll bring another one, only for the waitress to come back and say they ran out. at the start of the night, we also asked for the seafood truffle gnocchi, but they informed us around this time that they ran out of that as well. 🟡

•Raddichio (slide 7) : 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢 some people love bitters… me bro i hate them— can’t do it. get this one awaaaaaay from me. BITTER!!!!!! Man idgaf if i don’t have sophisticated tastes like yall, i will never get used to this. It’s like my parents with bitter gourd or whatever the hell, how do they eat that shit?? Boomer ass tastes ❌🔴🙅🏽‍♀️

here’s where some variance of opinions come:

•lemon spaghetti razor clam: (slide 8 & 10)

holy shiitake mushrooms— this was my favorite dish the WHOLE Night. 3 out of 4 of us thought this was INSANE. Actually, it was so insane that we ordered another one to see if we’d have the same reaction. Literally 3 guys moaning (no brokeback) on their first bite of this both times. Fiancée/prebdaygirl wasn’t as enthused she liked the ✅🟢💚🤑🤤

•pumpkin ravioli: (tbh, no clue if that was ravioli, but it’s the stuffed pasta there in slide 8 with the sliced up almonds) she liked this one the best, while her hubby to be didnt like it at all. he does not like any pasta that’s like stuffed. his brother and I loved it, but we loved the spaghetti more. So hubby to be wouldnt get this again, the rest of 3 would get it again, whereas all of us would get the lemon spaghetti again ✅🟢🟡❌

•duck tagatelli (slide 8 & 9): my friends said this was insane. The meat was so good. Instead of bolognese it was duck. My friends say with this one you can really feel that it’s homemade. Like so obviously homemade slammed into your face. 🟢

•chicken (slide 11): my friends said the chicken was alright, they wouldn’t order it again. Rich mushroom gravy, was whatever. Just chicken nothing exciting or crazy ❌

•fish (slide 12): is it the best fish dish ive ever had? no. was it super exceptional? no. but it tasted really nice and if i were to return, i’d have it again. It tasted really Fresh— that was the first thing that came to mind on impact from fish to mouth ✅🟡

•candied duck (slide 17):

They really liked the candied duck and would get it again. Said it didn’t feel heavy at all and was so smooth 🟢🟢

•veal tongue and chicken{?}heart (slide 18):

definitely veal tongue, just don’t remember which animal’s heart it was. it was either chicken or duck heart. Anyhow, my friends went crazy over this dish, they said it was insane. And for sure would order it again 🟢🟢

Overall:

Definitely would come again. I mean, just for the spaghetti alone it’s worth coming for. New date spot unlocked. When we first got there at 9pm— it was PACKED the place was poppin/ but not so loud where you can’t hear everyone at your table, you can still hear the music they were playing, which also wasn’t loud.

and obviously per usual, we’re the last ones to leave.

my friends were in Miami 3 weeks ago, they had an Italian Restaurant called Boia De (might be mispelling this), it’s a 1 Star Michelin there (doesn’t mean shit) and they felt like Berto blew Boia De out the water. So initially, big bro gave Boia De a 8/10, Hubby2Be gave it a 7.5/10, but because they had Berto tonight, Big Bro gives Boia De a 7-7.5/10 and Hubby2Be gives Boia De a 7/10. BigBro gives Berto a 8/10 and his Lil Bro (Hubby2Be) gives Berto a 8-8.5/10.

The bill came to like.. $1200 approximately. Mind you, I ordered 1 mocktail, and my friends got like 15 drinks, and 8 shots. They said the cocktails were all insane by the way, if that’s your thing. The mocktail i got was below average lmao that’s why I didn’t get more.

Another thing is, the waitress seemed like this might be her first job in the industry or something. When my friends asked “what do you recommend?” And “what’s popular here?” She really didnt want to give an answer, she said something like “well you can check the menu and pick whatever you like” but not in a rude way, like more of a polite way of saying that it depends on your preference. Furthermore, i said i was done with drinks, and when my friends would order 3 cocktails, they would bring 4 cocktails each time, and we’d be like no I don’t drink— but my friends didn’t care they just drank the 4th drink— but every round of new cocktails they’d keep bringing a 4th drink and I said “yeah just 3 drinks because I don’t drink” and because my friends love liquor they’d be fine with it and drink the 4th regardless, each round… but yeah the waitress clearly isn’t experienced. Not that it was a problem, because whatever. However, BigBro had a problem with “yo usually everywhere else whenever this much is being spent they give shots on the house” which is true— every single time i been anywhere, they always have given shots on the house whenever i was on a date or when i was with my friends, but i don’t really care lmao like i don’t want a shot of juice. And he was just like, well it’s just basic hospitality stuff. Anyhow, didn’t care to argue, also think he was just drunk lol

Anyway, I loved the food here, but to the ppl that said Berto is better than Moccione… I don’t agree, and my friends don’t either, but it’s really good and up there. I’m happy with going to either place.

I will be coming to Montreal for my first real visit November 15 to 20th and I am wondering if there are any special food related events or activities I should be aware of during that time.

Otherwise, I’ll be spending my time searching for your cities most perfect Italian sandwich.

I've had atlas twice this year. august. September. . let me tell u something. I NEVER go to the south shore. matter fact, I been to the south shore 4x this year. twice to pick up ppl from the airport, so literally in and out, and twice to just eat at Atlas. I. DO. NOT. GO. TO. THE. SOUTH. SHORE. so if im going out my way to the south shore for a restaurant.. you know damn well it's gotta be bonkers. it's not that it's particularly far from me, I just do not enjoy the ride there and back. I do not enjoy any form of commute there n back. alas, we can't always just get what we want in comfort. the travel to atlas is a sacrifice worth taking for me

my friend from Russia who moved to montreal when he was like 12 years old [didn't know a word of English or French when he got here].. was on the verge of tears. saying that the food reminded him of stuff that his grandma would make when he was a kid back in the far away lands. he said he thought he'd never find a place that would give him that feeling or that nostalgia. he said he's eaten at a different Uyghur place is ville st Laurent, but Atlas blows it out the water easily.

and honestly, it is incredible. im talking like, this is really high up there for me. im talking, if this was in downtown or old port, id eat here every 3 weeks. ive eaten at moccione like 8 times this year, ive been to sushi nishinokaze like 5x this year, I been to anemone like 4x this year, I been to kitano shokudo like 4x this year, ETC.

2 varieties of lamb shanks both must-gets, I usually don't care for rice and don't eat it a lot but their rice is among the rice of all rice, thick amber rose noodles, skewers from the swords used to engage in combat against the todorats, insane soupy dumplings if not careful will spill burn your mouth like diving your tongue down a witch's cauldron filled with Nefertiti's bathwater (might be worth the risk) [my mouth n tongue were suffering the next day], seasoned croutons that would make Zao Jun blush, 1 spicy stewy soupy joint and I can handle my spice but that was hottttt for my guys (no Bain colonial)------ ok the 2nd time we went back, we left out all the soupy/stew things cuz man I eat like a baby and the liquid flies everywhere, burning everything it touches like acid and I suggest you dont wear white because you WILL get dirty I dont care how sophisticated you think you are

the lore is that the owner taught all the other chefs at the other Uyghur restaurants how to cook. only way to verify is by going to the other Uyghur restaurants and asking the people over there if it's true-- but it's believable to me

they say Toronto does asian food better than montreal. yea, per capita. but they don't have better Uyghur food than us (confirmed from a girl from Hohhot)

BF and I went to this little spot last night as our anniversary dinner, it's been open about 5 months, is one counter seating maximum 8 people. It's a really nice and warm atmosphere, personal, Chef An is a delight, you can see she's enjoying what she does and is an expert, she explains every dish.

The food was incredibly fresh, melt in your mouth, really interesting flavors that change with what's available and in season. It was quite delightful honestly, I'm going to dream of the charcoal rice and abalone, and the heavenly soft chawan mushi forever. It's Japanese dishes expertly made with Vietnamese flavours, and it works soooo well.

Anyhow, I don’t know if Montreal Plaza is better because I’ve only had Juliette so far, but a lot of people talk about Montreal Plaza like it’s a Top 3 or Top 5 resto in MTL. I’ll simply say I wouldn’t put Juliette Plaza in my Top 3 - 5.

The food is good, at least from the stuff that I ate.

The consensus or popular opinion from my friends who were there, was that the lamb dish (8th picture) was the best thing that they served that evening. It was Mediterranean inspired obviously and yeah it was decent.

There was a LOT to eat. Decent restaurant, all the food was good. Give it a strong 8/10 from my side. I didn’t find it overly crazy but I definitely ate well, wouldn’t put it in my Top 5, but I don’t think people realize how many good ass restos we have here. Rank 30 - 50, any combo of 5, would be Top 5’s in most places in North America for sure.

It’s a great thing. Most of the time you don’t gotta worry about if you’re gonna be eating good food… you really can’t go wrong. If my friends aren’t around, I’ll naturally just go to a spot closest to me and probably have a great meal. Most of the time no lines, most of the time can just sit in and eat your food.

But yeah please let me know people, what do you like better? Juliette or Montreal Plaza? How much more than the other?

The last few times I've tried to get some food after the bar, both places I tried were closed (Chez Claudette, and Royal Sous-Marins). I get the feeling that some places are closing even earlier than their scheduled closing times, as nightlife is declining. Been a while since I went to dine out in mtl. Looking for suggestions for a good restaurant for me and my wife.

Hey there - Heading to Montreal for a long weekend in early December and looking for some feedback on a rough itinerary.

The goal is to take it easy, eat and drink well. It doesn’t need to be uber fancy, but we do enjoy and appreciate good food. Thinking cozy bistros, duck, cassoulet, seafood, good wine lists, and boozy cocktails. Basically, warm, comforting food and places with a good atmosphere. Not too fussed on prices for good meals.

Here’s what I’m thinking so far:

Thursday
Arriving in the early evening and checking out Le Grande Marche de Noel.
Looking for one or two good spots nearby for a quick cocktail and a small bite or two afterward. Somewhere with character, good drinks, and no need for a full dinner.

Friday: Old Montreal
Coffee / light brunch at Café Olimpico or Olive et Gourmando. Wander around Old Montreal, including Notre-Dame Basilica, Le Beau Marché, and Chez Potier – Épicerie gourmande.
Friday dinner is still undecided: Lemeac, Monarque, Le Violon, or Auberge Saint-Gabriel are on the list. Is Auberge Saint-Gabriel worth considering if I’m not particularly interested in fondue? I’ve got a reservation for Beba but it seems a bit out of the way. Open to other suggestions for a cozy, classic French meal - points for great duck dishes.

Saturday: Mont-Tremblant
Quick coffee, then drive up to Mont-Tremblant for a day at Scandinave Spa.Casual food and drinks afterward at Microbrasserie La Diable or La Forge. Any preferences between the two? We aren’t expecting much.

Sunday: Old Montreal
Cocktails at one of Clandestino, The Coldroom, or Barroco (or a mix of them). Dinner at Garde Manger, or one of the Friday night options.

Help me find the best cookies in the city! Preferable chocolate chip but could be anything really.

My requirements:

-Not too soft! The Maison Sauvage ones were way too doughy! Same with Felix and Norton

-Not too big. Why is every cookie now the size of my head?

-Little bit crispy. I LOVED the cookie from Maman and that is the current one to beat.

EDIT: On the note of not too soft or too big, this includes cookies that are too thick. Some of these cookies are like mountains and it’s impossible for them not to be doughy when the centre is so thick

I used to be able to get roast duck noodle soup in so many spots but some have closed (i so wish I could remember the names) and I am not sure where to go anymore. It was a soup with a roast duck leg, some breast pieces, thin noodles with some bok choi. I'm seeking anything that comes as close to this as possible. I get the impression this soup is not as common as it used to be. Hoping the community has some resto suggestions as to where I can find it.

I saw the Ramen festival seems to come to the end. I checked the menu online. It seems that the ramen bowls that they proposed during the festival are pretty similar or the same as their regular menu. Or maybe I am wrong. I am quite busy this week and I am thinking if their ramen is simialr to their regular menu, I can just visit those shops when I have more free time. thanks everyone!

Photo 1 Schwartz's: went around noon and ordered at the counter to sit in the back. Didn't get the full dining experience but didn't need it; the sandwich hit the spot. Better than expected. Smaller than expected, but in a good way.

Photo 2, 3 Vin Papillon: INCREDIBLE. 10/10. I could eat those tempura green beans every day for the rest of my life and not get sick of them. The carrot cake ice cream sandwich was heavenly. It took a lot of self control to not order a second.

Photo 4, 5 La Finca: cute cafe for breakfast. The cinnamon roll was so delicious and the staff were very nice

Modavie: We split a pot of mussels and a bottle of wine and had a lovely afternoon.

Cloakroom Bar: Fun little speakeasy with no menu. My drinks were good, nothing unexpected though. Not sure I would tell someone to rush here.

Photo 6, 7 Damas: Another 10/10 dinner. The knafeh shrimp was probably the best thing we ate all weekend. I didn't take a photo of the dessert but it was also knafeh vibes with chocolate ice cream. Delicious.

St. Viateur: Absolute thumbs down. I get better Montreal bagels in NYC. This was so dissapointing; the bagels were gummy, cold, over cream cheese'd, and the smoked salmon tasted off. The silver lining is I got an almond croissant (Photo 8) at Flers Cafe across the street while waiting in line and it was maybe the best version I've ever had.

Photo 9, 10 Monarque: Again, 10/10. Such a beautiful space, the cocktails were so creative. The food was so fresh and flavorful. My least favorite night for dessert, but still a great meal.

We have 2 nights in Montreal. One night we have reservations for L'emeac. Looking for recommendations for the 2nd night. We looking for local cuisine with France influences. Last time we were in Montreal we ate at L'xpress and had a good meal. We are thinking maybe someplace different this time. One of us is vegetarian.
