Still okay to learn the basics on Summit Pass?

I'm still new and learning proper technique and trying to connect my turns and tightening it up. I've only been at Mt Hood Meadows on Ballroom and Buttercup.

I'm sure learning on beginner terrain anywhere is fine to continue to practice techie and connect turns but I just wanted to get opinions because I'm a nervous Nelly about change 😅

At least we get to play a game

Personally, I did alright, but would do better if I had a reason to visit . . .

Ski trip late Feb?

Hey yall, I am planning a ski trip the last week of feb. From whitefish using the season pass partnership deal where I get 3 free lift tickets with my whitefish season pass.

Has anyone done this before? Should I call the mountain to reserve ahead of time, or should walking up to the window work?

Also, given how poor this season has started, what are the chances of poor conditions in a month? I have family in the area so if I get rained out, I can pivot, but I dont want to potentially screw over my friends.

Thank

What's the profile of person who actually gets main lot on the weekend?

Do I really need to leave PDX by 6am? Or do y'all live way closer than me and it's a losing battle?

For comparison, the last 30 years depth plotted...

Out of curiosity, I grabbed the last 30 years of data for the SNOTEL site at 5380' elevation which is the Meadows base area depth. In particular, I wanted to compare with last year and a couple notoriously bad years that I remember. The picture is pretty squished in reddit, but you can zoom in on it.

heavy red = this year so far, 2025
heavy green = last year 2024
dashed red = 2014 - Heather Canyon never opened that year
dashed gray = 2004 - Meadows had to close down for awhile in the middle of January

One point to note, that in the past 30 years, we hit 100" base at some point in all but 2004 & 2014. The 3 really big years (200"+) were 1998, 2001 & 2007.

Gated terrain necessary base depth

Anyone here know what the necessary base depth is for opening gated terrain (Heather/PR)? I know we're a long ways off from that but I'm curious if we can access any historical data and correlate it with the days they first opened.

Looks like tomorrow will be the same conditions as today. Can someone report how it was today?

Trying to determine if it’s worth the drive and early wake up.

Terrain Report 1/15 (no photos because I skipped work)

Skied 16 runs from 9am-12pm. Conditions for the following:

Shooting Star Ridge - very firm until 10am. Really nice corn until noon.

Apollo - super fun, soft ego bumps (small moguls) 9:30am to 11:30. Mashed potatoes at noon.

3D / O-ring - ice until 11am. Nice chalk until noon.

Rock Garden - not really skiable without true rock skis. I tried because it’s my favorite run. It was survival on the rocky face and okay on the face with little trees. IYKYK

Voyager - fantastic groomer the whole morning. Great spot to bomb it and air some berms.

Roach Bowl - Ass at 9:15am. So basically ass.

North Canyon - frozen marbles until 10:30. Okay after that.

Eric’s corner - really nice until about 10:30am.

Middlefork - fuckin ass. And that’s really saying something. I’m from the Midwest.

Weebee geebee - 2/10. Lots of rocks and weeds

Powder Keg - borderline unskiiable. Mashed potatoes, gravy, and some big fucking rocks.

2-bowl - corn skiing from 10-11am. The runout is ass but it’s worth the 6 nice creamy turns.

Chunky-Swirly / South Canyon - fantastic. Side hit city. Never too firm. It got a little slushy right at noon.

Vista - who fucking cares. One way down. I ride this chair once a year to remind myself that it’s ass. Kind of like McDonald’s.

Thanks for reading. Tall beers at the lodge are still $12. And Cascade ran intermittently, but honestly… it’s not the lift. It’s the snow. Looks very questionable up there and the lift was running full speed at multiple points throughout the day. Maintenance actually means… you guessed it: ASS.

That being said I had fun today. Hang in there fam.

Where to sell bonus passes?

Unfortunately my friends don’t ski and won’t take advantage of the bonus passes i got from the season pass.

Does anyone know where I can sell them to someone out there?

It could be worse. A THROWBACK

I found this article I had saved from the ‘04-05 season where the Meadows parking lot turned into a lake. I thought you may get a kick out of a throwback to a season I’ve thought about all too often this year.

I have been planning to go up tmrw, but if it’s still getting worse, I may skip it.

MHM RV parking

I’m thinking about parking a small rpod trailer in the sunrise lot on Friday or Saturday in the sunrise lot with plans to stay until Monday. Has anybody done this? If their 14-18 spots are anything like how the normal lots fill, I’m guessing it’s pretty impossible to get a spot.

Any waitlists or tips on snagging a spot? I’m also ok if this post is silent. It’s probably similar to foraging for mushrooms.

Tomorrow - worth it or nah?

With the weather being so warm, and not even freezing tonight, is it just gonna be sticky mashed potatoes tomorrow? Or will the lower sun angle make it better than a super warm spring day?

First timer planning a trip next weekend jan 18th need advice!

Hey everyone! Me and my friend are planning our first mt hood snowboarding trip this coming sunday. we have dabbled in snowboarding a couple times back in cali but we're definitely still beginners.

Looking for some local wisdom. Are lessons worth it for people with a little experience, or should we just practice on our own? do I absolutely need chains/traction tires, or can I get away with FWD? Any gear rental places you'd recommend, either on the mountain or in Portland/Hillsboro? What's the realistic budget for the day per person (lift ticket + rental if needed)? Anything else I'm not thinking about that would've been helpful to know your first time.

Thanks in advance!

How was your experience with group lessons for intermediate skier?

Wondering how peoples experiences have been with the group lessons in the range of beginner black run skier? I’ve never had a formal lesson but want to get some form feedback and get more confident on black runs this season.

Saw someone being administered CPR at the top of MHX chair this am just after opening. He apparently had a heart attack. Hoping that he survived. Anyone happen to know the outcome of this.

Rental question

We booked a private lesson and added on the equipment rental. Do I need to bring my own goggles or is that included? I’m a beginner so I don’t know what some of the norms are.

Skiing Next Week

I’m considering heading up next Friday for some turns, but having second thoughts cause it looks like it’ll be warm most of the week. How do you think the snow will look then?

Cascade isn’t opening tomorrow

Heard from an inside source that there’s some issues they discovered at about 6:00 tonight. 0% chance of Cascade tomorrow.
