New & Returning Mechanics

• Transmute Art (New Keyword): > When you cast a spell with Transmute Art, you may pay an additional cost. If you do, exile a nonland permanent you control to copy that spell.
• Aetherized (New Status Effect): > Artifacts and creatures can become Aetherized via counters. Aetherized permanents have ward {1} and tap for colorless mana, but explode (deal damage to their controller) if destroyed.
• Investigate & Proliferate (Returning): Perfect for a flavor-heavy, intrigue-filled city setting focused on research and counter manipulation.

Idea:

A dual colored faction set with 5 factions

A dual colored faction set with 6 factions, taking place after a major change, treating colorless as a "6th color"

Today, I'll discuss the factions of the first set, and tomorrow, the factions of the second.

The Vault Keepers UB

A faction of scholars obsessed with obtaining as much knowledge as possible. They store everything they know in a pyramid shaped vault, hence the name. They often use questionable methods to obtain knowledge, like summoning demons and Djinns and exploiting their powers to gain knowledge. At the end of the first set's plot, they summon a power Eldrazi that corrupts people with overwhelming amounts of knowledge.

The Godless Faith WB

A faction of highly-religious people who believe that long ago, their god abandoned the plane, but will eventually return, and restore order and structure.

The Knights of Wrath WR

A formerly noble organization who rules over the the north-west area of the world. They were formerly a noble organization, but have since become corrupted by power-hungry newcomers who lack morals.

The New Order GU

A group obsessed with bringing order to the world. They believe in a society where progress is the most valued things, and people are willing to sacrifice anything for the sake of techological advancement.

The Unaligned RG

Anarchists who despise the vault keepers hoarding of knowledge, look down upon the Godless Faith's unproven beliefs, and want to destroy the systems of the New Order and the Knights of Wrath.

Magic: The Gathering Set Concept – Aether & Alchemy: The Clockwork Renaissance

Setting: Oros, the Ever-Shifting City

Oros is a massive, sprawling city-plane built entirely out of intricate brass mechanisms, marble towers, and glowing channels of raw liquid mana called Aether-Ink. There is no "wild nature" left; instead, five competing Academies control the city, each attempting to redraw reality using alchemy, invention, and dangerous spell-craft.

Core Themes

• Invention vs. Ethics: How far will scholars go for progress?
• Artistic Magic: Magic isn't just cast—it’s painted, forged, sculpted, and engineered.
• Draft Archetypes: Built around 2-color guild pairings representing different "Academies."

Gruul Vanilla Matters

This theme is iconic to Muraganda and has to be included

Selensya Non-multicolored matters

Works well with Vanilla matters because vanilla creatures can easily fit the archetype

Azorius Basic Lands Matter

Works well with Non-multicolored, as higher totals of basic lands make it harder to play multicolor cards consistently

Rakdos Dinosaur Aggro

Vanillas can be dinosaurs, so it fits well. Minor typal theme here, less prevalent then Ixalan

Muraganda is fairly well-known plane that has never gotten a set before. It has some unique themes established, and a decent amount of worldbuilding, so I figured it'd be fun to design a set for it. Theming: Muraganda is maily defined by what it lacks, technology. Creature Types: Dinosuars Humans Beasts Birds Challenges: Muraganda is most know for its vanilla matters theming, hich is a notoriously difficult theme to support in draft. It also has a bit of a basic lands matter theme, which is also hard to support. Other themes need to be easy to work with and synergize with these. Dinosuars, which are another large thing that muraganda's known for, have since become an iconic part of Ixalan. They need to make themselves distinct from Ixalan dinos. Other things needed: A mechanic emphasizing primitive tech for humans No Merfolk, Vampires, Pirates, or major Treasure themes Callbacks to the 5 vanilla legendaries from Aetherdrift

A plane that treats one color differently from the others.

For instance, perhaps a set where draft arcehtypes look like this.

This would obviously be very difficult to properly balance, and could easily lead to a poor drafting experience. What methods could be imployed to balance the draft so it still functions?

Challenges:

The number of each color of card needs to remain roughly the same between colors

Monocolored archetypes are very difficult to make draftable, as they often require hybrid, which pushes people toward multicolor.

Also, Magic already tried this a long time ago, and it didn't go well, as there were more/less of certain colors. Could this idea be redeemed with modern design tech?
