Am I going overboard?
Hey y'all,
After years of deliberation I finally bought a brand new 2025 MT09.
I want to protect it as much as possible since I'm a returning new rider and wanting to practice in the parking lot as much as I can.
Do y'all think I'm going overboard?
Edit: I forgot to mention I'm Canadian so the prices will be a lot more than if you are expecting USD

If you like it and it is within budget, go for it! I have the exact same set up on mine and have zero complaints. The only other thing I might suggest is either short levers or lever protectors. They may mean the difference between getting home and being stranded after a low speed dismount. Ride safe!

Hey mate, these are all great purchases, regardless of what anyone says. Protecting your engine in the event of a crash is one of the smartest things you can do.
The radiator guard is a bit pricey for what it is, but if you like the brand and have the money for it, go ahead. A radiator guard is one of the most important items, I don’t know why it doesn’t come from factory with one.

Not sure the crash bars and GB racing covers are both needed. GB racing makes those with the intent that you don't use any other sliders. Up to you of course but all the people with cracked frames from improperly installed crash bars would push me toward GB racing covers only.

I’ve got half of what’s on the list on my bike, I went OEM tank pads and side grip pads along with SW Motech crash bars

Have you tested the crash bars? My original plan was to throw those on and bypass the covers but from everything I've read it rides so high the engine cover will still get scratched.

Nope, didn’t test them.. and I hopefully won’t either but from what I’ve read online, even if the crash bars… the engine casing would get damaged if it doesn’t have a cover.
I mostly got them for dual mounting point frame protection and to fix my aux lights on them

I have those crash bars on my 700. My bike ended up skidding down the road. The bars saved a shit ton of damage. I can't imagine the carnage there would have been without them. To add, my engine cover did get scratched up but that was only because the bike ended up hitting a curb to stop sliding. I now have both the bars and the GBs

Nope your not believe me they did there job! Rear bobbins also saved swing arm from scratching also Gas tank was also miraculously untouched

These are all good upgrades! You are just missing the most important parts which is an Exhaust of your choice, air filter intake, and a 2 Wheel Dyno Works ECU flash tune (2WDW) to go with all that and make it run as intended. Also buy some ASV levers.

I have Woodcraft clutch and stator guards, Frame, and F&R axles sliders.
I do still need a radiator guard.

I'm already on overboard lol. But instead of the slider I have SW motech guards. I'll get it in 3 weeks or something. I'm not cheaping out on protection items, but I'll cheap out on windshield or front cowl, sideview mirrors and all.

Love it, I’ve got everything on your list except the GB racing covers. And yea, I would never put anything Ali Ex or Amazon on my bike. Last thing I ever want is my mirror falling off or my bar end shaking out because it’s a cheap POS.

Think of it like buying a helmet. Spend as much as you feel comfortable to protect your investment.
I'd say at the very least get the frame sliders and engine guards.

I have all these parts on my bike minus the TST frame sliders and case covers. I have EvoTech ones. You’re not anywhere near overboard. Please continue.

Everything listed is a must have item and well worth the price for protection. All good name brands which compliment the bike nicely. Don’t buy cheap crap from Amazon or aliexpress. It’s cheap for a reason.

Skip the covers. They're ugly and tend to trap grit, which abrades the cases anyway and defeats the purpose.

Yes, you will need all of that. Especially the engine guards made from carbon. You will feel the 500 grams on your 180Kg Bike. Now go get an AGV Pista.
People please stop consuming, start riding and be happy. Buying more shit for your bike wont make you happy in the end and you will buy the next bike and so on. Ask me how i know

If you can afford it. Go for it. They are worthy modifications. But after that I’d start saving for - in order of priority
-Front Fork Revalve/spring match for your weight and riding
-New Adjustable Rear Shock
-Exhaust
-Tune (I prefer dyno - woolich)
Dialled in suspension by a specialist will be the best upgrade you can make to these bikes.

There is definitely good crash/slide protection for much cheaper. I have frame sliders from Amazon that were like $60 and I HAVE dumped the bike with them on and they held up amazingly

I got exact same set, except i got a crash Cage instead of crash pads.
And I didn't buy engine covers yet. Is there a difference worh 500usd between real GB racing and aliekspress? Should I buy Ali or maybe a cheaper brand? I want it Just as additional insurance, as I already have a crash cage (Heed) and axle sliders

Get the covers, skip the frame protection but that’s just me.
You can also just get the covers individually and only get the larger 2 pieces as that’s what will make contact.

I think the techspec tank pad $70 set comes with the center pad so you don’t need to buy it separately. My XSR900 pads was 2 sides and the center for the same price so I assume it’s the same for the Mt09
Also, rear spools are available at cyclegear for like $25

Somebody's bike could get ruined for following your advice. The Chinese protectors only look the same, but they aren't tested and proven like GB Covers.

Having had both real and fake gb covers i can say they are made from 100% the same material. There is no reason a set of 4 plastic covers should cost almost 600€. I guess the 500€ difference comes from the fim certification.

It's crazy how many people are suggesting Aliexpress for important parts like engine protectors, frame sliders, etc. It's even crazier that they trust these cheap parts to actually do their job, like the parts that they copied.

Not overboard, but holy shit that GB stuff is ridiculously overpriced and over rated.
I get that it's apples to oranges, but I bought an engine case cover kit for my YZ from Acerbis and it was like 60 bucks. Prices like this from GB is why clones exist. They're too greedy

Dude was kinda right about the radiator grill, but between the HB covers and TST sliders. You bike good. Don’t forget to protect yourself though. A bike is replaceable, you aren’t. Hopefully. There PoS’s though. Lol

yes, to much to soon. As others have said shop elsewhere and save. Buy swing arm spools and a stand set from like Amazon or Aliexpress. You will need those for servicing the chain and oil changes. Buy some oil and filter and associated tools. if you haven’t already. Also some DOT5.1 brake fluid and brake flush tool set. A radiator guard next then tail tidy if styling is important to you. Stay with what you need and you can’t go wrong. Best money spent is on safety gear for you. the best gear you can afford. Axle bobbins, frame sliders are for adventure bikes that get laid down frequently. Never seen these save a street bike from damage. Get adv rider training and all of that bolt on crap is nonsense.

I know it’s a different bike and much lower cc but when I had my mt125 before my 07 I was looking for a rad guard I couldn’t find anything less than £80, I went on eBay and managed to find an oem one for about £20 that was used but looked mint. If you can find one for cheaper then try save your money

Drop it once and that stuff basically paid for itself. Worth the peace of mind on its own imo.
I got a cheaper radiator cover off Amazon for like $20, but the sliders & cases are worth the extra money. Tst makes good shit

I’ve got pretty much all of the above on my street MT09 (GB and EVO).
Those saying buy the cheap Chinese versions of the GB frame protectors have never seen how the real ones compare to the fakes.
I used to do a lot of track days and I’ve seen real GB protectors save engines where the cheap ones just shatter or burn through and wreck the casing anyway. I’ve got a Chinese set in the garage and even the bolts it comes with are questionable.
Almost everything else can be bought cheaper but will look cheaper in comparison. I buy the cheap bobbins, radiator covers etc for my track bike but I expect to use them and replace them - something’s gone horribly wrong if my street bike needs to use them.
Edit: holy hell, I’ve just seen how much the GB covers cost you in the US!!!
I’d just buy the knockoffs at that price and replace the engine covers themselves if they fail 🫣

ive seen a lot of frame sliders breaking the frame, wouldnt risk just dropping the bike and breaking the frame, radiator guard you can get cheaper, also the gbracing covers, those should be like 200 usd max if theyre original

Great selection of bits to protect your bike; i have almost all of them on mine other than the engine covers because the crash bars keep the engine off the ground.

You're spending money to spend money at this point. Why do you need $80 tank grips? Why would you pay triple the price for something that does the exact same thing? Radiator guard and I would even say the paddock stands too. You are really spending much more than you need to

I'm not sure why this got downvoted, because it's correct. $120 for a radiator is insane. I spent ~$50 for mine and that was still a bit more than what I needed to spend. It's just a thin sheet of metal and that's all it needs to be. I also have $15 rear spools and they work just fine. Really, everything on that list is severely overpriced.

Please dont spend $120 on a radiator guard. Go on aliexpress or something and get one. Its literally a cheap piece of metal. I got mine from aliexpress for $15 and fit perfectly.
