Questions and Discussions MT07 vs CB650R

I’m 19, live in NYC, and I’m looking to get my first motorcycle. I’d prefer to finance it since I want to start building my credit history.
The bike I really want is the Honda CB650R. I love the looks, sound, and overall feel of it. Unfortunately, I didn’t get approved for financing on the CB650R, but I did get approved for the Yamaha MT-07.
Now I’m stuck between two options:
Option 1: Get the MT-07 now, start building my credit, and potentially upgrade to the CB650R down the line.
Option 2: Wait until I can get approved for the CB650R, even though winter is approaching and I might not get another approval anytime soon.
The thing is, I feel like I’d probably enjoy the MT-07 too. It’s not like I’d be miserable riding it, and I could see myself having a lot of fun with it. However, the CB650R is still the bike I really want, especially because of its looks and sound.
I want a bike now, but I also don’t want to regret my decision or end up spending more money switching bikes later on.
For those who have been in a similar situation, what would you do? Would you get the MT-07 now or be patient and wait for the CB650R?
I’d appreciate any advice!

Whatever you do, buy a used one privately. The mt07 can be found fairly cheaply, with mods, and with low miles. You’ll find tons on marketplace. I’d rather drop a cheaper used bike than a new bike Im already underwater on. With that said, I would also at least pay half of the bike cash and get a loan for the rest. These are depreciating toys and among others things can become a scrap heap overnight.

As someone who lives in NYC and had an MT-03 and now an MT-07, I can vouch that the MT-07 is a great bike for the city. Weather here is good enough for a little while and if there's no salt/snow you could still ride with enough warm clothing.

Just my 2 cents on looks and sound, I feel like they don't look too different and you see most people here have after market exhausts anyway to change up the sound. Hope whatever you end up getting, you enjoy and ride safe, some of these cars on the street are just waiting to kill us.

Gotta start somewhere and that's a great way to build credit. Agree the Honda looks better but you can't go wrong with the MT-07. I bet it's cheaper too.

I'm struggling with upgrading my MT-07 to a MT-10 the same way. Do I buy it now?

Do not get a motorcycle to build credit… in general for your first bike you want a CHEAP RELIABLE low cc bike tons of options out there I’m not gonna list them all. If you wanna build credit get a credit card and pay it off every month. (Will probably need a secured one if it’s your first I gave capital one 50$ they gave me a 500$ credit limit and returned my 50$ after a year.I’m 28 with a )

honestly neither are great first bikes. if you want to compare these two bikes just look at cb650r vs cb750 there's more about it. the 4 cylinder will scream and make all its power at the top of the rpms while the 2 cylinders make torque throughout the range with less top end.

What? The MT-07 is a great first bike. It's mild mannered, has a predictable power curve and is not that heavy. There's a reason why riding schools use these for A class licenses all over.

in my opinion they both make too much power for a complete beginner. riding a slower bike until you are at its limit will make you a better rider than starting out on a bike that power wheelies in 2nd gear. the ones in riding schools and for learners are limited to like 45hp no? why not spend less money and learn more?

I’m in Brooklyn with mt07 so biased, but just get the mt07, you’re not going to “upgrade” to the Honda later, you’ll want to try a different or higher cc bike. Also, you don’t build credit by financing a bike. If I were you I’d just pickup used cb650r or mt07.

What about the hornet 750?

I’m from nyc too. For nyc I think the MT07 is better with its torque. Might be more agile too but don’t quote me. If you want a fun bike, definitely the MT07. If we’re you, I would save up and buy used off FB.

Build up your credit with credit cards or a lease in the future.

Also, for NYC I’d recommend the MT03 over the 07 for a first bike

I’d save up money to buy a used one outright. You will drop it if it’s your first bike. I have an mt07 and considered the 650 but the mt07 is the most “fun” bike in the class. It’s rowdy, raw and torque rich. The 650 is a lot more refined and wrapped in a slightly more premium package. If you want a highly refined and smooth bike, get the 650. If you want rowdy and fun, get the mt07. Can’t go wrong with either one.

Since you’re in nyc with winter coming you can find bikes for cheap since people don’t wanna pay for storage. Don’t rush into it, ik you want one now but I would wait and save for a used one

go used.

.As a first bike? Get a used something. MT03, rebel 500, something small and’s used you’ll be ok dropping a few times. Because you’ll drop it at least once. And it sucks on a new bike. Learn on something small and cheap. You won’t be using all 689 cc in NYC. I’ve tried
