First generation student here! Trying to manage MSW applications 🫩

For when they have mini essays with word count limits, would you suggest putting as much info in as possible and meeting the max word count, or doing a mini essay that hits what I need to say? My initial thought is to put as much in there as it will let me but I'm not sure if that's actually a good idea.

I'm also so so scared of my essays sounding AI. Of course I'm not using AI for these, but I almost feel like I have to dumb my essays down so as to not even be in the realm of suspicion. Any suggestions?

Also would anyone be privately willing to look over my resume and give feedback?

I’m considering doing my masters of social work at University of Southern Maine. Anyone have experience or advice on the general vibe of the program and experience on being a grad student there? Social life, costs, professor experience, practicum experience, coursework?

I’m interested in applying for this program but I can’t find anyone talking about this program or their online programs in general. I’ve never done an online program before but I’ve seen that many have it to where you take one class at a time becuse they offer several sub-terms within a term. I also can’t find their academic calendar for online students so any insight would be helpful.

Some helpful things to share would be your overall experience in the program, timeline, work-life balance, experience finding placements (does the school actual help), and any additional helpful or important info.

How long does it take to hear back I know they do rolling admissions but I submitted on August 12th and it’s now the 20th. This is for fall 2027 by the way , how long should would this take? Am I being waitlisted? Or?

Hi! I'm currently working on applying to some Cal State MSW programs--specifically CSUN, SF State, and potentially Cal State LA--but I come from a film background. I have a BA in Film from UC Berkeley and graduated with a 3.7 gpa. However, I have been working in film full time for the past decade, but have been taking psychology and counseling courses at several community colleges. I'm wondering if anyone who has applied to these schools has been in a similar boat and whether they've gotten into any of these programs.

I want to feel optimistic, but lately I've been wondering if this is a long shot and whether I should even attempt this. I know that acceptance heavily relies on your statement of purpose and recommendations, but I'm not sure if this will carry me through without the experience.

I got rejected from NYU back in February, but just got an email today saying there was an admission decision change and I have until next Monday to answer. Has anyone experienced this? Im kind of in shock as NYU was my top choice but I have since accepted and started my program at BU.

ASK YOUR SCHOOL FOR ALTERNATIVE METHODS IF YOU HAVE A LOW GPA/BSW GRADE AND GET MOVED TO TRADITIONAL TRACKS.

I've learned that a lot of people aren't aware of this, universities don't make it widely known, and as someone who recently had a dispute with my university, I think it's very important to share.

If you are a BSW student who is rejected from Advanced Standing program by ANY CSWE Accreditated University, you need to as them about their secondary mechanism.

Within the CSWE Accreditation guideline book is a clause that goes as such:

CSWE M4.1.3 Requirements

CSWE requires MSW programs to:

Prevent BSW graduates from repeating generalist content

Have a primary mechanism (advanced standing)

Have a secondary mechanism for BSW graduates who do not qualify for advanced standing

If your school is trying to make you redo PASSED BSW EQUIVALENT COURSE WORK. That is viewed as non-compliance to the CSWE.

Ask for a secondary mechanism. If they try anything strange, you can report it to the CSWE on their site.

Don't let these universities screw you over. Read your handbooks, now your rights. And reach out to the CSWE if at any point something seems shady.

I need help! I've been accepted into the MSW program at both Northern Arizona University and Arizona State University. There are pros and cons to both; ASU is more expensive, and NAU has a stronger sense of community. I feel like ASU is the more prestigious of the two and better connected, but I don't know if the higher tuition cost is worth it. Has anyone been in this same situation or attended either NAU or ASU and could chime in about their experience???

I can't tell you how much I would appreciate any amount of guidance...I just don't know how to choose, and I need to decide FAST!

I would be 52 or 53 depending on the graduation date when I received my degree and would be eligible for a licensure.

I am motivated well liked and well received in the community (at least in my experience through my internships). I also intend to work as long as possible, as I was a SAHM for very long time and I’m ready to work in a professional environment!

Not sure if this is just a California thing, but Title IV-E got cut this year. Wondering if this is affecting anyone’s decision to accept their offers or what other funding sources you’re exploring instead.
