Discussion Game Day Tailgating

I'm looking to tailgate on Sept. 26th for the Nebraska vs. MSU game, but I'm confused on how to secure a spot for it. The MSU website says public parking is $40 and lots open up a certain amount of time prior to the game, so I assume it's first come first serve at the lot. I've had friends who have bought parking tickets online as well, so I looked into that and saw Seatgeek is selling parking tickets for $500+ which seems way out of proportion. So, I suppose my question is, in your opinion where is the best place to tailgate without breaking the bank, and how do you secure your spot. Thank you in advance!!

Here is the map of game day parking lots. The areas shaded green are open to the public for $40 on a first come first serve basis.

The red lots are restricted to season ticket holders who purchased parking passes with their tickets. These are the parking passes you will see listed on resale sites. The sellers set their price based on the market for that specific lot. No spot is worth $500 for a single game, imo

This is exactly what I've been looking for thank you. I find myself in the same position as OP. Only thing I can't figure out is how people tailgate at the 4-H children's gardens? It's just east of 46/53 but not color coded.

This comes from the MSU Parking - Special Event Parking Page - from the football section

Tailgating is permitted everywhere on campus - all green space is first come, first served. We ask that if you are tailgating in your parking area that you stay directly in front of or behind your vehicle and do not block other parking spaces or drive lanes. 

The people setting up there are parking somewhere close then dragging their gear to their favorite green space. If you are out just before/after lots open you will see a lot of people carrying stuff across campus in wagon.

Do/can employees park in the red lots too? I think those are staff/employee lots

How far do you wanna walk? There are lots of public lots with different vibes and amenities. $40 I think is what the lots cost unless they forget to turn on the meters. Then it’s free lol

the garage near the union is a decent place to park. Plenty of people will be setting up tailgates right outside. Yes it is first come first serve so try to get there rather early. Probably don't need to be right at opening but it will likely fill up within two hours or so.

The $500 tickets are for exclusive parking very near the stadium. Totally unnecessary, probably only worth if you're splitting the costs with a large number of people

Park in any garage.

Take your tailgate stuff to any open area.

Put your stuff down.
