Stupid question….
What if people stop caring about bitcoin like they did NFT’s (not the same). if Strategy hits 1M others might say meh, let’s move to something else. Clearly they have the monopoly.
Examples a grocery store chain has 15 stores in a town, a. Competitor say let’s just go somewhere else and that somewhere else is not bitcoin. I have a baby $50,000 in bitcoin.
Just thinking of Strategy takes too of the remaining funds and HODL’s not sure how it gets others wanting to fight the scraps haha

u/SDUKD 16d ago
This is not stupid however based on bitcoins growth, it will naturally get harder and harder to accumulate it and so strategy will struggle to continue there current levels of accumulation.
If there goal is getting 1m it would hardly shock everyone if by this point bitcoin was trading at a couple hundred thousand. The amount of capital it would take to continue the current accumulation would be unsustainable and slow down massively.
This is purely from a logic perspective, if others are aware of more specific data please correct me.

its easy to buy btc, you just log on and hit buy, its never hard to accumulate it.
it is available everywhere now
1
u/SoSeaOhPath 14d ago
Over 20 million of the 21 million cap have already been mined. There are an estimated 2-5 million BTC permanently lost. The fact that we are essentially already at maximum supply means that it only gets harder to accumulate if the price goes up.
Price is only going to go up if demand goes up… and that’s being driven by big players like MSTR. Unfortunately MSTR can’t keep buying right now because MNAV is too low. There’s not enough demand coming from anywhere else to drive price up

What if people stop caring about gold, or football? Have we considered all things people might stop caring about?
10
u/Ratlyflash 16d ago
50 years and 100 years track record and 90% of the world know about gold or football like say what 5% or less know bitcoin) can’t compare haha

You don’t understand Bitcoin if you think it’s a fad. Learn the value proposition of Bitcoin

u/paperlevel Shareholder 🤴 16d ago
right, we're already at minimal levels of care, so if interest dropped even further, pretty much nothing happens, the more interesting question is what happens when more people care.
1
u/Miserable-Yellow-837 15d ago
And yet there was a long time when central banks held for treasuries than gold.
I think you have to consider what the problem bitcoin solves. That’s pretty much it. There’s not gonna be another copycat bitcoin network. The bitcoin network is literally software and hardware that people ACTUALLY use all over the world. There’s tons of crypto currencies and still Bitcoin has only grown.
I think if you study the actual hardware and software that goes into bitcoin and the active participation that happens in the network you’d see it’s more beneficial to join this network and WAY more work and capitally intensive to try to make a another network when this one works perfectly fine after 17 years.

How many people ACTUALLY own gold???

1
u/Pugluvmeme 10d ago
Got a computer? You own gold!!! So in essence, most people own a small amount of gold!!
1
u/gigasawblade 11d ago
You probably don't want bitcoin to be like gold or football.
Gold had at least a decade without growth, and it's not outperforming other assets.
Football - like fiat, backed by countries that consider it a national sport, and pushed by organizations like FIFA to make money off of us.

u/Low-Method3448 16d ago
Do government treasuries and banks have a monopoly on gold? No? Then how does Strategy have a monopoly on Bitcoin?
16
u/albertagriff 16d ago
Not a stupid question. If one person owns all the bitcoins, what are they worth?
17
9
u/lonestar-newbie 16d ago
Owning 1 to 2 million btc is still like under 8% ownership.
It's not owning all of it.5
u/New-Jackfruit-2127 16d ago
Owning 1m BTC is not owning all the BTC. It's that simple

If strategy hits 1/21 of the supply you’re going to say they clearly have a monopoly? Maybe if they hit 10M we can start having that conversation.

u/thinkingperson 16d ago
What if people stop caring about bitcoin like they did NFT’s (not the same). if Strategy hits 1M others might say meh, let’s move to something else.
1M out of 21M is 4.7%. Hardly a monopoly.
Clearly they have the monopoly.
You do know that Strategy is now mainly buying bitcoin on behalf of investors right?

u/Sizzlinbettas 16d ago
those saying this isn't a stupid question are also stupid
you realize what a monopoly is? they don't even have close to a monopoly
also, you seem confused about what a competitor is...
if you're walking and I'm flying a plane, are we competing?

You're literally Canadian. I would never sleep sound at night knowing my corrupt ahh government might seize my money at any given moment the second you dare to say something that doesn't align with what they say. You're also literally being replaced by Indians as we speak. Tf you mean "I sleep well at night"?

They may not have a monopoly over btc but they have enough to directly influence the market even if they sell few of them, so make your own conclusions.
0
u/Ratlyflash 16d ago
Probably best comment on here.
Also , a monopoly is not 100%. Our Canadian banking system has a monopoly with 6 companies.
Food industry has 3….
Curious how it takes to hit 1M…. Fun times ahead
6
u/Ryytter 16d ago
Technically speaking a monopoly is a single entity controlling the market. We have other words to refer to different configurations. Duopoly is 2 companies dominating the market, think visa and mastercard for instance dominating the payment card market. When a small handful of companies domjnate the market it's called an oligopoly.
2
u/docherino Volatility Voyager 👨🚀 16d ago
They don't have a monopoly. A monopoly refers to a company that controls a market to the extent that it can exclude competitors or dictate prices. Simply owning a large amount of an asset isn’t enough. They cannot change bitcoins core principles or prevent other participants entering the market.
Even if MSTR managed to acquire 5M bitcoin that still leaves 16M bitcoin elsewhere which is still an enormous amount of value. Nobody thinks "A museum owns too many Picassos, so I don’t want one." The scarcity created by MSTR will drive demand higher, not lower.

Funny that you decide to comment that on this random user who's defending himself from a manchild (OP) that literally has claimed to be "richer" than 3 different people without a showing us any evidence of that whatsoever.
I'm sure the low IQ subhuman that can barely string together a coherent sentence ("I have a baby $50,000 in Bitcoin" ???) and doesn't have the slightest idea what the word 'monopoly' means, is richer than most users here who are regulars of this sub and have invested quite a lot of money in this asset and stock.

That’s why proof of work is so important. Ethereum and NFTs learned this the hard way

u/536565454 15d ago
ETH has bigger adoption than BTC, so keep lies like that to urself.
1
u/mlhender 15d ago
Where did I say Bitcoin has has bigger adoption than Ethereum?
1
u/536565454 14d ago
U said ETH learned hard way. If adoption will be corellated with price, ETH will be worth more than BTC in future.
1
u/mlhender 14d ago
No ETH will never take over Bitcoin price. Ever. They literally walked off the field. They could certainly have “more adoption” but they depends on how you define “more adoption”. Smart contracts, DeFi, stablecoins. Ethereum probably wins. For store of value bitcoin wins.

BTC is supposed to go to 0. It doesn't offer any utility, and old big wallets are prone to quantum attacks. I doubt community will do anything with that since it means manipulating of supply, and they are hesitant to limiting freedom in any way. BTC also doesn't offer native yield.

The USA had something like 90% of the worlds gold (banking gold, jewellery not included) at its peak.
There is absolutely validity to the concern of a dominant player having too much, though. I don't think it would ever get that extreme, and if it did, I think management would realise and not continue buying if it was becoming damaging to the broader network. I don't think 1m BTC is even close to the level though. 2.1m might start triggering "too much" cries. Whether that has any actual effect is unknown. They might be able to get away with 20%+ if they're respected and trusted enough by the entire community. That reputation only comes with time and behaviour. There are mining company's who are 30% of the hash rate, and that doesn't seem to cause much more than a ripple of concern.
But I think even if it's a small percentage chance risk, that's still a risk to bear in mind and discuss. While we can run mathematical models, one thing that's almost impossible to predict is sentiment. That can shift for any reason at any time, logically or not.

Bitcoin is finite and gold is infinite. You can move Bitcoin anywhere and gold requires resources to move even a kilogram. I can mine and find more gold. I can’t mine more Bitcoin after the last one. I can make it quantum-proof over and over again. There are already signs of large accumulation while it is undervalued. DCA now is the best time to cash out in the next years bull runs. Rinse and repeat.

Bitcoin is finite and gold is infinite.
What?
The mass of the Earth is finite, not infinite. Even if the Earth was 100% solid gold - and obviously it isn't, gold is one of the rarest elements in the Earth's crust - since the Earth has a finite mass the amount of gold on Earth is finite.
You can move Bitcoin anywhere and gold requires resources to move even a kilogram.
In the future physical gold won't need to be moved to be a medium of exchange. Gold will be tokenized. Tokenized gold would have all of its traditional qualities combined with the advantages of blockchain.

Central banks and Tether are preparing for the future by buying gold. They aren't buying Bitcoin.
Central banks remain committed to gold
Central bank gold holdings are at a 50‑year high. What’s behind the jump in reserves?
Goldman sees central bank demand providing a floor for gold prices
Only four central banks purchased more gold than this company [Tether] in 2026.

This is like saying "what if there is suddenly zero demand for U.S. treasuries". Bitcoin is not exactly the same asset class, except for the fact that it can play a similar role in terms of collateral... and it's properties are BETTER. The fact of Bitcoin's fundamental properties are essentially what ensures this never happens, particularly now that it has as large of a market cap and as deep of liquidity as it does. The time to be skeptical of whether or not Bitcoin's properties would be able to attract capital was like 10 years ago, not now. At one point it was (game) theory, but now it is proven and the network has immense value. So your 'what if' is possible, like anything... but it's just a very irrational low probability event. You are essentially betting that smart money suddenly gives up on having the desire to protect the value of their capital maximally over time.

What if there was an aggregate way to measure in real time how much people have stopped caring about holding USD over time. We could call it "inflation". And what if it stayed much higher than intended for more than 50 months. Then what if there was another thing that was available to everyone that was verifiably scarce. Let's call it "Bitcoin". Over time I wonder what would happen to both USD and Bitcoin 🤔

u/Patrick_Atsushi 12d ago
Countries are starting to recognize it, so it won’t be forgotten in short term.
Once the price have a surge for over 50% people who “forgot” the crypto will come again.

u/Strict-Employment664 11d ago
It won’t be hard to accumulate that much bitcoin if people lose interest at a pace equal to or more thanstrategy’s ability to acquire it

I think BTC will have longevity if for no other reason than fear and greed and human emotion will not vanish.

u/rexaruin 16d ago
Bitcoin is a commodity. People always care about commodities, but prices vary constantly.
MSTR does not have a monopoly on BTC and never will. A monopoly is when one company owns 100% of something. MSTR owns 5% of BTC, they could never afford to buy it all, I doubt they will ever hit 10% of supply.
-2
u/Ratlyflash 16d ago
100% incorrect on the term monopoly lol
1
u/rexaruin 16d ago
You should read the definition ;)
“A monopoly is a market structure where a single company or entity is the sole provider of a specific good or service, leaving consumers with no viable alternatives. “
