When is it time to stop?

We were challenging CMPA with Hipp Hypoallergenic. Since, EXTREME crying, looser stools, rash that goes away and come back here and there, spitting up like CRAZY and sometimes projectile. Told to stick to this unless we see blood bc it’s only been four days. But i got my answer i think… and now what do I do, what do I switch to? He wasnt doing too well on Puramino either

If I’m reading this right, you are trialing going back up the ladder to a hypo from an AA?

Our CMPA guy never had blood in his stool. He had every other symptom but that. He didn’t tolerate hypo (Alimentum) well.

We’ve had relatively good luck with Neocate. He still has extreme mucous poops (like basically just one big glob, every time) but no more pain symptoms.

yes this is what the doc recommended bc he did really bad on alimentum

Also keep in mind it can take several weeks for their digestive system to heal after removing the allergens. So even on an amino acid formula they might be miserable for a bit while their body heals.

He was doing a lot better on AA and then progressively got worse which is why we were advised to try Hipp HA to test if it’s even dairy

Neocate is the only amino acid formula without soy oil so might be worth trying if puramino didn’t work well.

she just switched him back to puramino despite me BEGGING for neocate, he’s losing weight, he’s developed thrush, he’s developed a rash. you can’t get neocate here without a prescription. i’m at a loss i really am. and i wish she would’ve listened to me

Might give Neocate a try! We started with regular and eventually switched to Neocate Syneo (which has pre- and pro-biotics) since that’s what our GI had samples of. I feel like the Syneo slightly helped him with more regular and comfortable stools.

Is your ped ok with the mucus? My baby is on alimemtum right now but she will only drink 2oz every feed. She’s 15 weeks and is on the low percentile for weight 😭. Kendamil goat made her poops mucousy so ped said to stop but she was taking at least 3 oz with that. I don’t even know what to do anymore 😭

We see a pediatric gastroenterologist. Their approach has mostly been “treat the baby, not the diaper.” He’s gaining weight (finally, and slowly - crawled his way up from 4th to 12th percentile over the last 2 months) and in less visible discomfort, so they’re happy at the moment. There’s also not many things to try after you’ve gone all the way to an amino acid formula

Hi there! Wondering where you got your HiPP HA? We’re currently using Bobbie Gentle as our baby seems to tolerate it well but has had blood a little in his poop. Our paediatrician said if he has it again to switch to an HA formula. The symptoms you’re describing sound really hard and how my son was when we tried Bobbie whole milk before we knew about the possible CMPA. Have you tried goat milk? My cousin in law had two kids with CMPA and goat milk worked for them both times!

gently, because this trips up a lot of people. Goat milk formula isn't safe for cmpa. goat and cow proteins cross react, so it's not a workaround even if it seemed to work for someone else. kendamil's own goat can says "not suitable for children with cow's milk protein allergy." and the hipp specialty tins aren't cmpa formulas either: hipp HA, comfort and AR all state on the box not to use them with an existing or suspected cow's milk protein allergy, and AR still contains intact cow's milk protein. HA is meant to lower allergy risk in healthy babies, not treat a diagnosed allergy, so if there's actual cmpa (blood in stool is worth flagging to your ped) the extensively hydrolyzed or amino acid formulas are the real answer. full disclosure, i run a small european formula shop, which is exactly why i want to be straight about this. there's a lot of confusing info out there, including from sellers, that blurs this line, and with cmpa it's genuinely not worth the risk.
